Week 1 is always the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, so no...originally seasons were only going to be 12 games for years in which Saturday of LDW was in August (2002 and '03, and therefore going back to 11 for '04 and '05), but I'm guessing there was too much $ to be made not to play 12 games every year, which they did starting in '06.

I'm not sure why the IB was moved to the week before Thanksgiving from '93-'06, but 12 games every year likely resulted in the move back to Thanksgiving weekend in '07.

This was the start of the SECCG era and I think the sentiment to some degree was both schools agreed it would be best to get the IB out of the way before the holiday..... AND if either is fortunate to have won the West they had a built in bye week to prepare for the SECCG.

if I recall a small contingent of SEC schools called out both AU and Bama (ironically not shortly after AU's 2004 run) for setting up that built-in advantage.  So they moved it back.

  2. Defense took some steps forward, offense took plenty of steps backwards.  Were designed runs for Thorne apart of the early script on offense?  We had what felt like several of those in succession on a couple drives.  Those can be scrapped.

Media highlights about how turnovers killed Cal, but they were almost equally as costly for AU.

Not as disciplined as last week when it comes to penalty yardage.

Plenty to work on this week.

That was an ugly game aside from defensive bright spots (Assante was beastmode). Tons of room for improvement.

Also, PTB... please no more 10:30 eastern kickoffs. Thats way too late and I feel like shite today.

I think the Pac12 is largely responsible for negotiating that horrible time slot for its teams' home games.

Sark is torching that Bama defense tonight.  Bama fans will blame it on Milroe not being a good enough passer, but TX has receivers running free all over the place.

Milroe hasn't been great when he's had some time, but Bama's pass protection has been average at best.

  5. Bama not getting much pressure with their front on defense.  They've struggled getting off blocks on those screens and also look sloppy tackling at times as well.

Their O-line looks suspect and getting beaten up front by the UTx D-line.  It also doesn't help that Bama WR are getting little separation on pass plays.

Nebraska fans already regretting not getting Sanders. The days of building with lower tier guys are over. You have to amass talent and quickly to make an imprint. There is no reason why Nebraska got walk ons and such a bad transfer QB starting on offense.

Sanders is going to continue to hurt NU more so where they've been hurting the past decade plus, and that's recruiting the state of Texas

He benefitted greatly from back to back to back elite college QBs like Deshaun Watson, Tajh Boyd, and Trevor Lawrence. Last year’s and this year’s QBs aren’t at that level. But I agree with those who believe it is way too early to declare the end of their run.

Those three were huge difference makers in Clemson's run.   They will probably continue to win 9 games or better, but being a consistent playoff fixture?  Looks like those days are done.  Clemson's offense is a mess and Kade Klubnik is not in the same tier as Boyd, Lawrence and Watson.

What prompted these two schools to schedule? Unclear. The only mutual connection between these schools appears to be their apparel sponsor: Under Armour. Auburn is currently in search of a new apparel deal, and is free to negotiate with any company, including Under Armour.

AL.com contacted Under Armour to inquire if the company has had a role in organizing games between teams in its apparel network including this Auburn-Cal series or any other in-network matchup. Under Armour did not respond to multiple requests for interviews.

Auburn currently has a home-and-home series set up with UCLA in 2027 and 2028. UCLA was sponsored by Under Armour when that series was agreed upon but is now a Jordan brand team.

I'm guessing Under Armor was incentivizing UA sponsored teams from different conferences to schedule games against each other.....

Battie strikes me as more situational than as an every down back. I feel really good about Cobb & Alston, and frankly, Sean Jackson intrigues me. Reminds me a bit of Pettway.

This is exactly who I had in mind for some short yardage situations.

LSU will obviously drop a lot and FSU rise. The main thing was seeing Auburn in it at all at 22#

ESPN's data mojo machine is confusing as all get out.

Their so-called analytics predictor gives Cal the edge at 54%.  I know that's probably the homefield advantage factor, but if they don't believe AU wins then why waste a ranking on them.
