With addition of former SMU F Ja’Heim Hudson, Auburn builds frontcourt depth

SMU transfer forward Ja’Heim Hudson committed to Auburn on Friday night according to a post on his Instagram account, an addition that gives Auburn some long-sought frontcourt depth this offseason.

Hudson visited Auburn on May 15 and after several attempts to find a forward didn’t pan out, Hudson wound up as the swing Auburn finally connected on. Auburn reportedly held visits with Texas forward Dillon Mitchell who committed to Cincinnati earlier Friday and several recruiting outlets reported Auburn was supposed to have a visit with Clemson transfer forward R.J. Godfrey before he canceled it and quickly committed to Georgia. Auburn also reportedly had a call with Samford transfer forward Achor Achor, but never got him for an on-campus visit.

Auburn’s pitch is a bit complicated. There isn’t a clear path to starters’ minutes for any forward addition. Auburn brought back Johni Broome, Dylan Cardwell and Chaney Johnson. The only major frontcourt piece Auburn lost was Jaylin Williams, the winningest player in Auburn’s program history who exhausted his eligibility.

All three big men on Auburn’s roster before Hudson’s addition were going to play, and whoever came in to take the scholarship spot left by Williams was going to be part of a rotation.

In an age where players hit the transfer portal often looking for more playing time, Auburn is selling the opposite. Head coach Bruce Pearl proved that could work in an SEC Tournament title-winning season with a team that was truly 10-deep. Whether next year’s team will be the same is unclear, but it remains a general model.

Hudson, a Georgia native, came off the bench for SMU last season, his only year there after transferring from Georgia State.

Hudson entered the portal on May 1, after SMU hired former USC coach Andy Enfield to lead its team. Enfield’s departure from Los Angeles started a chain where Eric Musselman left the head coach job at Arkansas to go to USC and Arkansas lured John Calipari from Kentucky to Arkansas.

In his one year at SMU, Hudson played 15.2 minutes per game and scored 5.4 points per game. He played in 31 games and started one.

He started 34 games in the previous two seasons at Georgia State, including scoring 10.1 points per game as a sophomore in the 2022-23 season. Hudson will have one remaining year of eligibility.

Hudson and Georgia State played Auburn in the 2022-23 season at Neville Arena. Hudson scored eight points in that game and had 11 rebounds.

Hudson is Auburn’s second major transfer portal addition following Furman transfer guard JP Pegues. Auburn’s only other incoming forward at this point is freshman Jahki Howard.

Auburn has two remaining scholarships open, but is probably likely to only fill one of them. The second was vacated by Carter Sobera, a walk-on who earned a scholarship midway through last season.

For the spot Auburn will fill, it’s likely to do so with a guard. Auburn lost three top guards from last year’s team and has only brought in two thus far.

Maybe practice depth. He can play with the scout team.

I was too young to remember the ending of Sonny’s time here, but yea, if this year is any indication on what Auburn is going to do with NIL, then it’s going to be rough in the following years. It appears we will get one great portal player, a couple of good high school recruits and then fill out the rest of the roster with role players and guys who want to prove themselves while our rivals are constantly improving their roster with more better players.

I’ve lost faith in Bruce’s intellect over the years.  I kind of get the vibe he’s stubborn and won’t adjust.  But maybe I’m mistaken.  Thoughts?

He is still better than anything I have ever witnessed at Auburn.

So I just read some very interesting things online about the reason we are struggling so much. Now, there’s no concrete evidence of this and I have no idea how valid this is, but apparently Bruce is the reason we are struggling. He provides an NIL package to the player and it’s basically a take or leave it. He doesn’t counter offer and if another team has a higher bid and the player comes back with wanting a counter offer, he apparently tells the player to go ahead and commit to the other team. Again, I have no idea how valid this is but what’s everyone’s thoughts on this?

BS. Like I said, it looks like the end when lies start to be made up about the coach.

Yale knew perfectly well they could bait Mazara and they did and it worked. Pearl knew KD was an out of control turnover machine and still had him in the game in critical moments.

Pearl has weaknesses that blueblood coaches tend to minimize. He gets a lot out of less talent than others, but getting over the hump in terms of tourney play is going to continue to be a challenge because of discipline... because that's when it's needed the most.

You can't show me evidence that "blueblood coaches" discipline their players while Pearl does not. You are talking about coaching style, not whether a coach or not maintains discipline.

The Sec just got better by a large margin with Texas and Oklahoma.

Auburn is in a difficult situation. We were way behind before and possibly even more now. Freeze is up against the wall to perform. Hope he can deliver a team that wins 7 which is not much of an improvement but holding steady. Beat Oklahoma and the season looks promising. If we see the same confusion and garbage as last year , AD Cohen needs to start compiling a list.

You want to start over in recruiting after two years? No thank you. I think people can forget about compiling lists these days. Fire your coach and all the kids transfer out. Also, there are no great coaches to compile lists on. Those days are over.

Hope this kid sticks with us, but commitment doesn't mean the same as it did in the day.  It's a long time until signing day. Ole Miss and MSU NIL will probably have something to say before it's all over .It's hard to get overly excited about early out of state commits. I think we've already had a few to decommit. Let's hope our coaches have learned form this.  WDE!!

You get excited about the PR not the commitment. The PR helps with other commitments and builds an energy.

Player discipline doesn't really seem like a strong suit for pearl. Flannigan didn't have it when he was throwing punches at practice. Aden didnt seem to have any discipline with showing up high to practice. KD had his moments. Most of the players, including Broome talk back to Bruce and the refs. CBM certainly didn't have much discipline. And on top of all that, i couldnt see any visible punishments handed out for most of it. Not much holding them out or lost playing time. I dont think what I see on the court lines up with your statement.

Player discipline doesn't seem like a strong suit for any coach at any team that is competing at a high level. You want discipline go hire a Tommy Joe Eagles clone and let him recruit and win eight games a year. Bryan Harsin would be an even better choice. This is not the military. These are immature children that you have to motivate to action. You do what is necessary and that requires you giving them power.

    College Football to early poll...article - https://www.yahoo.com/sports/college-football-way-too-early-104650398.html

Just thought I would post this and say I hope that this is the year we can actually look like we are making progress at returning to where we are at least in the conversation. But lets get on record what YOU think our record will be at the end of the year...

My prediction will be 7-5, I am just hoping we can compete and close out some close games this year and actually look like we are making progress and that goes for the coaches also...especially for the coaching which I thought was not done well last year at all IMHO, thats just my opinion...

    Whats your prediction...

I remain at 7-5 too, but there will be incredible expectations of something better. Maybe, we can expect some excitement on offense. That might be the next step.

I just saw someone post that there is still a chance Auburn can get him in. Have you heard anything like that?

We probably would have gone to him earlier if grades were not an issue. Because of limited funds, we are looking at players with grade issues and past accusations. I'm not against Bruce trying everything to build a competitive team. My guess is the lack of funds will lead Bruce into retirement quicker. He is not going to sit around and get his brains beat in by teams like Alabama with superior talent.

Nothing we can do except kick back and watch at this point. I know Broome is getting a mil easy, but I wonder what some of the other guys are getting for us to be so capped out. I know the rough estimate for power 5 starters has been around 200k as a floor, but Chaney Johnson? Denver Jones? 200k for them....I dunno. and then when you get to the bench guys, I guess Dylan may make some good bread due to the basically unlimited public appearances he makes for the university and all the content he provides for social media. I've seen CMo around and I'm sure he gets at least 6 digits but...does he need to?

I dunno, we may just be cooked lol (in terms of building a 10 man championship contending rotation). I listened to the CBS CBB podcast and they say coaches have now adjusted from looking for 13 real players to 11, but we're looking at 8? Does CMo count as a real player? We also don't have a walkon worth giving minutes to, unlike the last couple years. I think bare minimum we'll need to wait until the CFB regime can get guys without having to overpay to compensate for being a losing product. Hopefully they start winning some games so they can show (proof of concept) and that money can get rebalanced.

I've got similar concerning questions or comments like we don't need players like CMo to be receiving any kind of compensation beyond a scholarship. Ivy going to UCF is a sure sign we don't have much money left.

I have no “insider knowledge “ per se, most of my information comes from other Auburn boards and online. What I have read, take it with a grain of salt, is that many of the top teams are after him, like Kansas and Duke I believe. And unfortunately for most of these players NIL is a major factor. It’s why I’m surprised he would come visit. He’s mainly a point guard, he would be backup to Pegues. But again, I don’t know what Pearl will try and sell him. I know that Auburn can at least tell Achor Achor would be the starter for us day one at PF, so that makes sense for him to visit.

Are you sure Kansas and Duke are after him? He only visited UCF and Wake Forest according to 247. He has played at minor schools and jumped around from team to team.

  13. 18 hours ago, AUSCalum87 said:

Apparently he will be setting up a visit with us as well. Big guard at 6’3 and is a great shooter. Actually seems like a better fit than Duke.

No way he is a better fit. If he were, we would have targeted him before Duke. We are going down the NIL/talent payment order. We can pay more than Wake Forest and UCF I guess. This kid is jumping around from team to team looking for money and playing time.

I meant to edit my earlier post. Got confused with my positions. I believe Achor Achor would take Chaney’s spot and Broome would be the 5. Although I could see them switch sometimes. That would be ideal. And then have Chaney and Cardwell off the bench, they would be formidable backups to Broome and Achor Achor.

    Point guards are needed.

Auburn is historically a top 15 football team. I'm willing to bet the NIL money for the football program is at least in the top 20. We are not some poverty program and we need to quit acting like one.

The problem is we hire coaches no one else wants. And then we act surprised when they suck.

Get the right coach in here and AU is easily a top 10-20 football program. With a chance to win at all if we go on a run at the right time in the 12 team playoff.

    Agree.

Just catching up in this thread. I think for the most part most of us can agree that the NIL packages for basketball is severely lacking compared to our rivals and has been hindering Pearl for the past few years in getting the best players available in the portal. Like I said earlier, we have one really good player from the portal this in Pegues, but outside of that, it looks like Pearl will have to go after diamonds in the rough while our competition is improving almost all of their positions. It’s sad reality but nothing that we can do about it.

As for our current roster, it is a top 20 team. I still don’t think Chaney is starter material but we have no options behind him. And we have to hope Pegues lives up to his potential or we will be back at struggling like last year at the position.

It will be a roster that finishes top 4 or 6 in the regular season and win one tournament game. After the last two freshmen busts (Westry, Holloway), I'm not expecting Pettiford to give us elite play. We need an NBA guy or two. It seems like those days are over. The Turds meanwhile will be competing for the top position.

Agree completely. It’s why when I hear “experts” talk about the upcoming basketball season and making predictions, I just have to laugh because there’s no way in knowing what will happen to the portal. Auburn is a prime example of that. If Auburn had gotten Duke and a legit PF, Auburn would easily be in the top 10, more than likely top 5. However, after we have discussed about Auburn’s mediocre NIL for basketball, it means Auburn will have to fill out those last two spots to projects more than likely again, meaning we will now be ranked somewhere between 15-20 preseason.

But in saying that, overall next year is going to be a grind in the SEC and in college basketball in general. I wish I could skip football season and go straight into basketball, 🤣

Why would we give money to guys who can't play?

  18. 3 hours ago, GwillMac6 said:

It’s been reported on AU sites today we don’t have much if any NIL money left for next years bball team. Bruce continues to have a smaller war chest to work with than our rivals. Cal can snap his fingers at arky now and if he needs any extra cash they are giving it to him to build a very talented roster. Bruce always has to hit on some crazy evals like Chaney and CBM and do more with less.

Passthebiscuits can confirm. Where is Alabama getting the money? That is what really sucks.  They are paying out a lot to get all of these players.

So, in other words, we should withhold opinions regarding CHF for a couple more years, because he needs to cycle out more players and *hopefully* pull in and coach up better players. Is that what this thread is about? The dream of delayed gratification? 🤪

Yep. It is also in response to the thought that we are going to lose a lot of seniors/experienced players next year. I don't think that is a problem because we will not be losing high end talent when that happens. We will be ever strengthening some positions like the QB and OL talent. Give me young and good over old and bad any day of the week.
