Well, how many coaches did he change out with the apparent goal of getting better? The two main ones in my mind were both OC and DC ( usually where the during game decisions originate). Looks like to me he is doing just as good if not better in HS recruiting and the portal, with new ( definitely he believes) better on field decisions/game plans.

I guess we will see how it goes....hope for the best...been a brutal few years of trying to watch the games which I always do but past few years, ooof...

I learned through years on the job to be careful who you complain about because you haven’t seen their replacement yet. That became true when Harsin was hired to succeed Gus. We need to be patient with Freeze as long as he is working his tail off like he is. We tend to forget that the other teams are always trying to get better too so to catch up Freeze has to work even harder.  Auburn getting consistently better isn’t the hardest part. Auburn getting consistently better than the top 3-4 teams in the SEC is what’s going to take more time. That’s where showing progress the first 3 years is so important. Unless Freeze does something harmful to Auburn we need to hope we can, at a minimum, get through his initial contract. Can’t keep paying coaches to go away

Again no one disagrees with what he has done in regards to recruiting, it's the coaching that he appears to have a problem with...hopefully that will improve this year but he seems to make a lot of excuses instead of taking responsibility for his decisions. Again hoping he looks better on the coaching side of things this year...

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, Patience.   A novel trait which most AU fans do not have at this time.

Eh I can't speak for all fans but I think most of us have patience if we see some inkling of improvement. CHF has done an outstanding job of getting recruiting turned around but he needs to be able to show some progress on the field. Some of those games last year the coaching was abhorrent, I would use some other adjectives but will leave it at that. IMHO if he continues to display that kind of coaching, no excuses are going to matter, who wants to pay to go see that. Everybody can say just give him time but at some point he needs to put up or shut up...:)

A better line, a more effective run game and sure-handed receivers provide him with weapons to improve. Whether that translates to wins, who knows?

Agree, our receivers dropped a lot of balls, I stated that earlier that maybe things may have been different if they caught some of them, maybe changed the momentum of some of the games etc...Hoping for the best.

Honestly I don’t have faith that Thorne will prove to be have improved to the point of taking us from a six win team to an 8 or 9. My hope is the people around him can offset it all. I do hope that this loyalty to Thorne does not become the undoing of Hugh Freeze.

Agree that is what I am concerned about also, sometimes I wonder is he sees it as his failure since he brought him in, like acknowledging that he was wrong. I dunno, maybe Thorne has a better year, I guess we will see.

If he comes out of the UGA game showing and has shown little to no improvement, give the open weekend to groom another QB.  See what the new guy can do against Mizzou & UK, and if that doesn't pan out put Thorne back in for Vandy/ULM and roll the dice to finish out with aTm/Bama.   I don't see Hugh swapping out mid-season, he's all-in on Thorne and he may sink or swim with him.

Yeah thats what I don't get, maybe it's just me but he seems to be pretty stubborn when it comes to that kind of stuff, kind of reminds me of Gus. Maybe most of the coaches are like that I dunno but he didnt want to make a change at all...

I don’t believe we will have a losing season but say we go 6-7 or something weird like that , I don’t see him getting fired either. He will get at least three years no matter what in my eyes.

Agree that he will get 3 years but not going to be pretty if he has a rough season, I think it will get ugly. I'm all for being patience if it looks like we are making progress and I give him props for recruiting but at some point you have to show that we are making progress on the field. I dunno thats just my take, I want to win championships but right now I would just take looking like we belong on the field and can close out some games.

I agree with you. I’m to the point where I can’t get excited about Thorne. If we had Georgia’s OL? Sure. But we don’t.

It’s possible he has another season like he had at MSU. RPO and keeping defenses honest will determine a lot of his success. Can he tuck and run and hit those open receivers if the corners bite? That’s one way he can create explosive plays. I don’t think he can do it over the top consistently.

This is a normie take but if PT is struggling mid season, do you wash your hands with the guy and give the reins to HB or whoever is next man up? They’re selling the future and it could help with showing the next QB. Idk. This is probably the most pessimistic I’ve ever been about Auburn football. That Iron Bowl did me in.

I agree with what you are saying about Thorne but again CHF made the decision to stay put, at some point he has to take accountability for HIS decisions. I am hoping if we can give PT a little more time to throw AND some receivers that actually catch the ball maybe he is good enough. He looked brutal during some games but there were a LOT of drops also, if the receivers catch some of those balls maybe he settles in and looks better than he did, I can at least hope.

Depends on CFH’s long term strategy. Does he think he needs another top 10 or 5 class to survive past 2025? If so then we should expect 6-7 wins because 2024 will again be a “recruit first” season.

If he thinks he can coach and recruit at a high level then I think 7-8 maybe even 9 is possible. Recruiting shouldn’t be as difficult as last year as those relationships have been established. A CFH who is managing each and every game plan and who has a better understanding of his program should produce more wins.

I think it may get pretty ugly if he has a losing season, I don't think they would let him go unless its really brutal but man I think if he is unable to show some progress then its going to get more difficult each year to say give me time. I guess he will get at least 3 years but at some point all the excuses have to stop and you have to show that you are getting better, just my opinion.

  10. Great keep them coming...I mean lets get it documented so we can look at the end of year and see where we are. I see some are giving multiple options, its not multiple choice question just one pick that you think they will end up. Just for fun, I hope we destroy my 7-5 prediction on the plus side since it will mean we had a good year. I am hoping we do better but some of the coaching some last year play, well not sure how we are going to do this year.

99% of our problems the last several years have been poor offensive line talent and play. It is why our red zone performance has been so poor the last several years. In the red zone, a defense can rush more against the pass because the field is not as deep, and it is easier to run man for man pass defenses in the red zone. I am hoping the OL will be better, giving QBs more time to make throws, less intentional throw-aways to avoid sacks, etc. Also, the WR room is much improved, so we should have a capable passing game. If that happens, we will not face a loaded box as much as we have in the past, which should improve our red zone performance.

To put this into perspective, consider the Iron Bowl in 2021. Our pass rush with Derick Hall and Eku Leota almost won that game for us because for the first time in a decade Bama did not have a top offensive line. Same reason Michigan was able to blow up that last play in the CFP. I think the key to success on offense is to have a top offensive line. And on defense, you need two stand-outs on the defensive front four.

That said, we did not see this happen in the A-Day game, but A--Day is such a sterile scrimmage now I do not know how useful it is.

Be sure to leave your prediction.

I'll be disappointed with less than 8-4. Last year's team would have been 7-5 without the inexplicable loss to New Mexico State. I think to show any improvement the 2024 team will have to be a minimum of 8-4.

I too was going to say 8-4 but given how we looked last year for some games, honestly I am not sure what we are going to look like this year, hoping its better than what we saw last year.

  13. College Football to early poll...article - https://www.yahoo.com/sports/college-football-way-too-early-104650398.html

Just thought I would post this and say I hope that this is the year we can actually look like we are making progress at returning to where we are at least in the conversation. But lets get on record what YOU think our record will be at the end of the year...

My prediction will be 7-5, I am just hoping we can compete and close out some close games this year and actually look like we are making progress and that goes for the coaches also...especially for the coaching which I thought was not done well last year at all IMHO, thats just my opinion...

    Whats your prediction...

Bo Nix FIRST round draft pick, 12th player taken overall.

So for those that said he wasn’t any good….

On a sidenote: he finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting as well. Can you imagine if the guy was actually good?

Bill Belichick stated: “he’s the number one pocket passer in the entire draft and you have to be intelligent to run Denver’s offense”

Happy for him and hope it works out but for me I would wait and see how he does in the NFL with top defenses. There are lots of QB's drafted high that have not panned out, lots. Actually I think it would have been better for him to be drafted lower where he could have worked behind someone before being thrown into the fire. I felt like that is what happen with Gus, imho he should have never started playing when he did, was not ready and needed more time to mature etc. So again pulling for him but will wait to see how it works out, being drafted high is not any indication of how things are going to turn out...

That’s why I am not at all upset about the players making moves. Bill o Brien just did the same thing. Now chip kelly leaves a HC job to become a coordinator .

Eggggsactly...coaches have been doing this stuff for years and the players were just supposed to bend over. I know there are a lot of folks that are not happy with the portal and NIL but it's long overdue that the kids who are actually putting there bodies on the line are able to do the same things that the coaches have been doing forever.

  16. I just read about the Chip Kelly drama, now there is a coach that you really do not want to lead your program...he is only concerned about himself. Must be nice to be filthy rich when you can walk away from at least 4m in salary...

I dunno but thats pretty crazy what took place, just up and left, lol...

  17. My guess and it's only a guess but he either still has something in work or was unable to get someone he felt was an upgrade. I was willing to give PT the benefit of the doubt but he has had plenty games where he just looks, well not good. Hard to say if we had some receivers that could catch the ball how that would have changed his confidence or the stats but not real thrilled about getting to watch him for another whole season. Seems like CHF is banking of yet again just trying to muddle through another season to set up for season three, but at least for me is next year is a dumpster fire and is no better than this year, then it's not going to be pretty. I understand that we are not there from a talent perspective but the play calling and the team being flat for certain games better not happen next year..you need to start showing some improvement and IMHO that starts next year.

BTW no mention of HG is he no longer in contention or why haven't we seen his name mentioned any?

Those idiots over on the Auburn page of The Rant truly believe that Nick Saban retired all because he knows that Hugh Freeze is taking over and Saban doesn't want to deal with it. Forget that Alabama just went undefeated in the SEC, won their millionth SEC Title by beating a Georgia team on a 29 game win streak, came 1 play from making it to the National Title game, has the #3 recruiting class and won 12 games this year. Meanwhile look at our chaotic situation where we're losing 7 games for 3 straight years, can't beat Bama or Georgia, our QB is VERY meh, Caddy and Zac's problems, coordinators fired AGAIN but we brought in some highly rated WR's so Saban is shaking in his boots and had to retire. The same folks on The Rant also claimed Bear Bryant was scared to deal with Pat Dye so he retired because of that. Nevermind that Bear's health was freaking dead man walking and he would die very soon after retiring. The Rant AU page probably thinks Bear had his heart attack because he was so scared of Pat Dye and AU.

I guess that's how a big portion of our fanbase copes with our current chaotic situation and 5 year dark cloud that is Auburn football. They just tell themselves that DeBoer will be exactly like Harsin and that Freeze is putting the GOAT out of a job by going 6-7 again and chaos on our staff. Whatever helps them sleep at night I guess. A HUGE portion of our fanbase is freaking delusional as hell.

Eh, I will say we are kind of in the same place that bama was was in before Saban..they were just an average team. I think Saban's and NIL and the portal made it much harder for him to control things and it shows. While they did win this year it wasn't easy as in years past and I only see it getting tougher. So yeah I agree we are still somewhat a work in progress but at least we have a good recruiting class for a change and with Saban leaving I think that can only help. Deboer may be a good.fit and may not, I hope they return to the prior Saban era, may not happen overnight but each year I think they will keep sliding down the hill that they have been on, already happening IMHO....

    I don't think it does.

Deboer inherited a team that was 4-8 and he took them to the national championship in 2 years.

Bryan Harsin inherited a team that was used to winning and had a clear talent advantage in the conference.

Eh It think the comparison are that they are 2 northwest coaches with NO SEC experience, not strong recruiters, etc. I think Deboer may be a ok coach, but he has never had to recruit in the SEC and never agaisnt the competition like the SEC...we will see how he does, with no southern connections he has a lot of work to do...

He’s won either at lower competitive levels or in places that were languishing and needed a turnaround. Neither of those scenarios describes Turdscaloosa. They’re gonna expect that man to field a dominant team that is favored in every game from Day 1, with no more than about one loss per year. Could be another Oats, or another Harsin. Probably somewhere in between. Personally, I think it’ll eat him up and spit him out in about 3-4 years time. Time will tell. Curious what his “process” is…

All I know is recruiting is brutal in the SEC and if you look at his recruiting classes never have been that high...I guess we will see, I am hoping to return to the pre saban days when they couldnt find a coach...:)
