What makes you think this? We haven't ever hired a top name coach and it won't happen this time. That is why we are in this mess, because the PTB and fanbase always thinks a better coach is around the corner.

Surprise me, please, and hire a proven coach! Even then, half of the dumbest fanbase in sports will be pissed and ready to fire whomever is hired.

The qualifier was IF. We are a top 10 grossing CFB program. The only thing that holds the program back is not acting like the top 10 program we could be. The “lil ol Auburn”schtick is old.

The fan base (I think) as a whole just wants a good solid coach that can get us to consistent 10 win seasons. A championship is THE FARTHEST thing from my mind when I’m judging a coach on success. I think that is the case with a vast majority of the fan base as well. I just want to see good solid consistent football.

The PTB I can agree with however, I think it’s more they want to win with “their guy” and that tends to be an Auburn retread who shouldn’t be HC at a top 10 earning program. That is going to be the hardest part to overcome.

"We need a top tier proven coach!" ... Looks at brian kelley, looks at jimbo...

Wheels begin to turn in ones mind.  Maybe we don't?

There is a vast canyon of coaches between “proven coach” and Dell McGee. Maybe before we look at a RB coach we should look at successful OCs and DCs. I’m not saying you’re wrong that “proven” head coaches don’t guarantee success. Just a huge pool of applicants between HC and position coach.

If your last impression of him was our OL play in 2012, I can understand. But with the benefit of hindsight, I wish Gus had kept him and maybe Yox (and no one else).

Gus absolutely should have kept him. That same O-line that he recruited is what allowed us to blow open Grand Canyon sized holes in opposing D-lines in 2013.

Lol. No he wouldn’t. I wouldn’t want him as a OC hire let alone head coach. No major school with similar prestige to AU would have him anywhere near the top of their board. He wouldn’t even be on it. This would go right back to a boring “safe” (which btw isn’t safe at all because Safe means decent floor but low ceiling and I def don’t think grimes has a high floor.) vanilla hire that has AU ties. If he didn’t have AU ties he wouldn’t be considered. What has he done that even remotely makes you think he would be a good hire?

BYU 2017 year before Grimes - 124th offensive production

    BYU 2018 - 79th

    BYU 2019 - 68th

    BYU 2020 - 3rd

Baylor 2020 year before Grimes - 101st offensive production

    Baylor 2021 - 40th

    Baylor 2022 so far - 27th

the guys has improved offensive lines and offenses everywhere he has been. I get not wanting him as a HC but to say you wouldn’t take him as an OC? Especially when we are currently 107th in offensive production. It just seems short sighted to me.

I'm glad you include Grimes in that list, because the negative response elsewhere baffled me (people who don't know what he's done since 2012?) + that's kind of our only realistic option out of them. Not including Deion of course.

Grimes to me has proven himself outside of Auburn on multiple occasions and is up for a HC job somewhere. He is the only “Auburn Man” I feel would make a great hire. Other programs are giving him a look as well.

Saying Grimes and Deion are the only two realistic options is why we are in the mess we are in though. Miami stole Cristobal, USC stole Riley, LSU stole Kelly. If we get our house in order we can hire almost anyone we want not named Saban, Kirby, or Dabo. With that being said, I agree with the sentiment if the status quo continues.

  6. Name one other top power five program that would currently hire Dell McGee as a head coach. There is your answer. If he didn’t play for Auburn he wouldn’t be mentioned. Aranda, Grimes, Wittingham, Stoops, Kiffin, Leipold, Fickell. All on the table if the PTB will get going in one direction and hire a man to run the program. Instead we want to hire Dell McGee because he is an “Auburn Man” and knows the SEC. This is why we can’t be consistent SMH. The only reason I’d go for Deion Sanders is because he is such a star that he absolutely would win recruiting battles and at the very least has proven on some level he can win. If I’m a recruit and Saban, Kirby, and McGee come to me I’m saying “who?” On that third one.

Problem will be if we waste plays on first down which is the case in any football game. Can we get 3 yards on first down. Unfortunately with this staff I’ve seen it too many times. Saw Gus do it all the time too. Putting yourself in 2nd and 11 by running into a stacked box or trying some “trickeration” is the last thing we need. Hope they come up with a solid gameplan to make it look like we have a shot.

  8. If he doesn’t transfer then I’m ok with this. Save the eligibility for when we get a real staff in here. I wasn’t as upset about D. Davis and some of the others as some people were. Landon King is a weapon and I would hate to see him go.

    Hear me out on this-

The Great Auburn Heist, how 2 men stole the soul of a family.

    It begins-

Allen Green knew that he wasn't going to work out with auburn due to the PTB didn't like him as a hire. So he began to scheme for just the right moment to really screw auburn over for years after he was gone from AU. There was indeed the infamous "hot tub meeting" and during this he and harsin set up "THE PLAN". The details of said plan is a 7 part elaborate scheme and it is as follows.

1st- He would convince Gustavo to tank just enough that the PTB would agree to pay him his gazillion $ buy out but not suck to bad that would make him a risk to hire for another job.

2nd- Green begins to talk about making an "Outside hire" so that everyone will get excited that we are going after a hot commodity, sure fire winner, up and Comer that just needed a chance at a P5 powerhouse.

3rd-  Then he would Bring in Harsin and sign him to a contract that would pay him in 1 season what his entire contract at BSU would and include an ironclad buyout that would set him up in the future so he could return to the tater field of Boise and coach out the rest of his days there after securing the bag.

4th- Harsin would come in and preach discipline and toughness to fire up the fan base and systematically begin to chip away at the program from the inside starting with recruiting, and then overflowing into alienation of the players to cause a mass exodus of players from the program.

5th- He starts the season rolling and brings hope and excitement to the program to secure the belief in him and Allen for the "outside" hire.

6th- once he proved that he could compete he then began phase 2- start throwing the games in the second half so that auburn fans would become incensed and begin calling for his firing.

7th- Begin phase 3. after limping through the end of the season and sinking the program on the recruiting trail he would have "sources" set the ball rolling on the "investigation" that was suppose to get him out and back to Boise with his bag and allow Green an out to resign and get away with a clean break successfully bringing down the auburn football program from the inside out.

This was suppose to conclude their plan

However, since the PTB didn't want to appear weak and foolish so they decided to give him another season to give them time to figure out what to do next. So now the Idaho potatoes gang are literally just adding the final touches to sinking this program deeper into the abyss that is mediocrity in recruiting and competition on the field just sticking it to them a little harder for not letting the spuds return home to count their money and retire.

This is just my theory but it seems as reasonable to believe as Bryan Harsin actually being a head coach for our beloved AUBURN UNIVERSITY.

What are your thoughts on this?

This is some real Illuminati type stuff. I’m here for it. Makes me feel better than just admitting we hired a coach in over his head.

So teams should have everything together and figured out by the time the first game comes? Injuries play a factor as well as you never know how they will respond under the lights when you watch them in practice.

More figured out than Gus or Harsin have. Agreed injuries can really hinder you and that can’t be blamed on the coaches. However, we got better with our injuries which means you had your better players on the bench. By halftime against SJSU someone should have stood up and said “hey the two QB system isn’t working, our o-line is a turnstile, Scott isn’t cutting it in punt return, and we need to get some of these big bodied receivers on the field.” You really can’t excuse it past the first half of Penn State. Waiting until LSU almost halfway through the season to make adjustments is poor decision making. Calling a trick play with Koy Moore in the red zone when Hunter has been gashing them on the ground and Robby has been consistent enough to win is bad decision making. Not trying your Freshman kicker with a canon for a leg on 4th-10 since Ander’s is clearly not 100% or just punting is bad decision making. Couple that with guys who haven’t seen a lot of playing time and well, you saw the results.

What about if the players maybe made a few plays that they didn’t and didn’t fumble handoffs and muff punts. Love that people act like it’s all coaching.

The guys played their tails off but outside of a couple strange play calls I’d say it was a good game plan and we looked like the better team.

Problem is it does come back to coaching. We looked so much better on O-line last night. Partially because of scheme, partially because of changes along the O-line, partially because of the QB. Why weren’t these things thought out in the spring? Why didn’t Robby get reps at QB1 sooner? Why is Scott still returning punts when he has had issues all year? Why are some of the young guys just seeing the field now 5 games in when they clearly have a ton of talent. The turnovers, jitters, bad habits could’ve been worked out a while ago. You put your best players out there and get the hiccups out against Mercer and San Jose State. That doesn’t absolve the players but you have to put a good amount of the blame on the staff for not realizing what they had and working within that. It’s one of the same problems I had with Gus.

  12. Hunter was on fire ripping off 10 yard runs. Better try a trick play. Just what a joke. Scott Obviously isn’t it in the return game. Better keep him back there. Tank obviously can’t catch. Better keep throwing it to him. Some things can’t be helped. That DB made a great play on Koy. That is what it is. All of the other crap around that was 100% on Harsin and his “staff”.

Texas' O-line was good enough to lose to Texas Tech. Of course, Texas has been losing around 5 games a year since 2009, so maybe that's got nothing to do with O-line recruiting.

Just watching this year they look miles better and that’s with two true freshman on the line. Didn’t watch the game but I assume the two turnovers had more to do with their loss. I do know in the Alabama game they basically deleted Alabama’s D-line in the passing game. 31 was nowhere to be found most of the game. They need work in the run game but I would take their line over ours in a heartbeat.

  14. So I’m sure I’ve said different in another thread but after thinking through what the program NEEDS desperately I have my number #1.

#1 - Coach Deion “Prime Time” Sanders.

Why? Number one. Deion has been around football for at least 40 years dating back to Highschool. He has been a player or coach at every level. He has a network that he can tapped into of players and coaches that would make Nick Saban blush. Not to mention his media connections. Does this automatically make him a great coach? Nope. Has he proven it at an SEC level? Nope. However, the mans network is so vast and he is definitely willing to use it as shown by his staff at JSU. I have no doubt that his FLOOR for OC/DC would be McGee/Muschamp. Second, we have a branding problem. Im the media and with players. We aren’t seen as a destination for O-line, QB’s, or WR that want to be in the league. On top of that our brand isn’t drawing NIL dollars like it should be. Deion can play the media game. Twelve year olds know about JSU and Coach Prime. Think about that. JSU is getting as much media attention as P5 programs. Third, recruiting. This goes back to branding in a sense. More NIL dollars? Check. Bigger brand in media. Check. A guy who has been to the league and will hire staff that can get you to the league. Check. A guy that can help you as a player build your brand. Check. Also anyone who says “these young guys don’t care about or know who Deion Sanders is” is kidding themselves. Everyone who has ever played a down football knows who Prime Time is. If that legend walks into your living room and says “Come play for my team” you are at least considering it. “He recruited one 5 star” at JSU. That doesn’t happen in the modern era.

TLDR; He won’t be a detriment to X’s and O’s. He will assemble a killer staff. He will build a brand for AU and it’s players. We will immediately start winning recruiting battles against Alabama and UGA.

Grimes is my theoretical first choice, my practical first choice is:

    HC—Monken

    OC—McGee

    DC—Muschamp/TWill

I’ve seen Monken thrown around a few times. Guy has been around football forever and has done some amazing things. If we could get McGee and Muschamp or someone of similar caliber under him I wouldn’t hate it.

I think it was a combination of an interim president who didn't have the stomach for the fight, an AD that was out of his depth and not in sync with the power players, and the PTB being split into factions backing different guys.  The first part of that is fixe and the second one soon will be.  And I believe that plus how things played out because of the stupid infighting has people more amenable to getting on the same page now.

Time will tell though.  We're experts at shooting ourselves in the dick during these searches.

I hope this is this case. I hope as far as the PTB some of them have realized that winning period is more important than having their vision be the way we win. Whether that be with a certain coach, in a certain uniform, with a certain play style. Whatever it is. Hopefully if it’s someone like Coach Prime they can say “Ok, he is a little flashy for my taste, he is going to want Orange jerseys at some point, but I’m ok with being a little less traditional because he runs a tight program and will bring in a great staff and a bunch of 5 star athletes.” Not saying Prime is my #1 choice just using him as an example. I really hope these guys can pull together and get over some of the superficial things to hire a great coach.

It’s just hard for me to believe our O line can get no push.  None.  No holes, no push, nothing.  Leaking like a sieve in pass protection.   Is it scheme or are they just that weak or is it both?  They are all older, more experienced players.  I expected them to be a lot better this year when a bunch of seniors came back but they look worse than ever.  I just don’t understand it.  Where are the coaches we used to have on the forum?

I think it has to be scheme.  I don’t know enough about O-line to have an educated answer but it just seems like they always miss someone like it’s a blown assignment. Maybe that has to do with losing Brahms as an anchor.   Somehow the returning guys look even worse than last year.

If I'm AD my first call is Urban. If he says "hell no" then I would consult with him to see who would be good fit long term to compete with Kirby and Nick. Need someone who has a history of building a program that can score points.

My second call is Luke Fickell. He could be waiting out the tOSU or ND job. That's fine, he can get more exposure and access to better recruits at Auburn in the meantime.

I'd probably call James Franklin after that, but with the money the B1G is about to have I don't know if he would leave PSU.

I would ask Eric Bieniemy if he has any interest in college or recruiting. If so, I would look into that. NFL guy with a great offensive reputation.

I like Grimes too. I don't think Lane would leave Ole Miss for Auburn. Winning at Ole Miss looks much better on a resume. Mark Stoops is great for Kentucky, but I don't think it would work at Auburn.

Auburn needs to swing for the fences. If not, then we are accepting that we're not taking football that serious. That's sort of a death sentence for an AD and president at Auburn.

Eric Bieniemy is a spicy one. I don’t know that he likes recruiting though. He declined the Colorado HC job at one point. Maybe he just didn’t want that on his record. I like it and I like your process. Woodford for AD.
