He is NOT looking for a "co-DC". He is looking for a full DC.
Charles Kelly has a "Co" tag as a title, he is not expected to be the actual playcaller. No different than when Kodi Burns was "Co-OC" here. Do you think Kodi Burns was doing any playcalling?
The "co" was throwing me off. Thanks

Need someone to call defense, I believe. Seems to not be Kelly’s forte.
That makes sense. Thank you.

What bugs me is that it isn’t even accurate if Im understanding it correctly. Kirby Smart’s first class was ranked 3rd. Ryan Day’s was 5th.
Exactly!! They also forgot Brian Kelly's first class at LSU was 5th. They used the On3 Industry rankings so I went there and it had the 2023 class for LSU 5th. 247 had the same LSU class 5th overall as well.
So our Auburn football social media team missed Kirby with a 3rd place class overall and Brian Kelly with a 5th place class overall.

I'm sorry if it's already been mentioned and I just missed it but I wonder why Coach Freeze feels like we need co-DC's?
As of right now, all of our position groups have their coach. D-Line is Jeremy Garrett, linebackers is Josh Aldridge, safeties and co-DC is Charles Kelly and cornerbacks is Crime Dog.
I know Charles Kelly is co-DC as well as safeties coach. Will the other co-DC, whomever it will be, also be a position coach as well? If so, then what position will they coach since all of our defensive position groups already have their coach?
It seems like Freeze could've named Charles Kelly the full DC and safeties coach kinda how he has Derrike Nix as OC and RB coach. WDE

People saying we lost because we played bad but Mississippi State played bad too.

I'm not suggesting we need a new coach, never said that. I'm suggesting that he deserves criticism and outward criticism for not lighting a fire under his teams ass enough to even play like they want to win.
I never said those championships are unacceptable. But winning does not and should not absolve a coach from getting maximum effort out of his players or putting them in the best situations to be successful.
As for the football program, I gave up on it being that great a long time ago. I feel like people are more delusional about our football program than anything else.
Great post!!!!

Oh man. Lots of seniors on the OL
If Payton Thorne is our starter at QB and my math is correct, 14 of our 22 starters will be seniors if AUwent's starting roster is right. Just from what we've seen in 2023 on the field and the portal guys we've signed recently, this list looks about right. Dang, that's alot of seniors.

At least for this year, feels like the offensive line is shaping up to be a strength for us? But yeah defensive line needs help.
Just D-Line.
You're right, our O-Line should be pretty good for this year. Bryan Matthews article I read today said Freeze only had 9 scholarship O-Linemen when he took this job and then 4 of those transferred out leaving us with 5. He and Jake Thornton hit the portal hard and got that number up. The article said we now have 14 scholarship O-Linemen entering this years spring practice and a 15th will be here in late May. Hugh has always said he likes to keep 16 scholarship O-Linemen on the roster at all-times. So we are pretty close.

This Auburn team lacks a Jabari type player that can absolutely take over games when you need it. This team wins by being 11 deep and playing together. Tonight, we need that Jabari type dog to take over but we just don't have that from what I've seen.

In March we led Bama by 17 until the refs stepped in and completely changed the flow of the game. Hopefully we can return that favor in the 2nd half. Gotta hit some shots though.

Winning on the road in college basketball is the hardest thing to do in any sport. There's stats to back it up. Look how we never lose at home but struggle away from Auburn. Bama was blown out at Tennessee. Kentucky lost at South Carolina. Tennessee lost at Mississippi State. It happens.

With all the negative publicity surrounding Alabama's football program since Saban retired, I'm sure they felt like they had to win this RW recruitment over Auburn. They probably overspent (no source but just a hunch) and felt it was well worth overspending on RW then to have him sign with us and take another huge hit to their programs image.
We will be just fine with this WR class we have. I hope we use this NIL money we had for RW and go get us some help in the trenches or at QB or an edge rusher.

Could this be an indicator that Harbaugh is moving to the NFL and Michigan intends to hire Kelly?
Well, the first domino just fell. Harbaugh has accepted the Chargers job. So Michigan HC job is open now.

Guys, let debore have his honeymoon. Just wait till his 1st loss. RW recruitment will be forgotten about. Let's see how he does with the 2025 class.
DeBoer will lose pretty quick when they play Georgia September 28th and it's in Tuscaloosa so fans will really lose their minds when he loses at home.

I can understand if RW chooses Bama. DeBoer has had explosive offenses in his past and we are pretty dang questionable for this coming season if we're just being honest. It will be great if we land RW but if we don't, we still have the best WR class in our history coming in and hopefully we can take that NIL money that RW was going to get and we can go land some linemen, a QB or edge rushers.
What we don't need to happen is RW signing with Bama and then alot of our fans losing their s*** and thinking all is lost here at Auburn because it's not. We still have great WR's and we will be ok regardless of what RW chooses.

He just couldn’t stay away from that second paragraph, could he? 😂
Kiffin took a shot at us on that last paragraph as well. The national media has recognized our current WR class as possibly being the best in the country so Lane had to take a shot at us by saying Ole Miss has the best WR room in the nation.
Lane Kiffin may be a great play caller but he has the maturity of a 12 year old kid. For awhile, it seemed Lane may have turned a corner but with the way he treated this entire situation of us hiring Coach Nix, it shows me that Lane is still the same immature and childish ass he has always been.
I like this hire alot and I think we upgraded our coaching and recruiting by adding Coach Nix.

Kane Wommack was the DC at Indiana in 2019 when Kalen DeBoer was their OC. So they've worked together in the past but only for 1 season.
The turds hiring Wommack and Linguist as co-DC's will help us in recruiting. They're not popular coaches like Alabama has grown accustomed to having on their staff.
I also think Bama will struggle to hire good position coaches on defense because a really good defensive coach with a household name isn't gonna jump at the chance to work under Wommack and Linguist. That's just my opinion.
This whole coaching search has been really weird according to Bammer's on social media. I don't know exactly what they think has been weird but I've read or heard quiet a bit of their fans mentioning the search for staff guys has been handled pretty weird.
This is definitely our best shot in 17 years to swing the momentum back to our side in both recruiting and on field results. I pray that Freeze and his guys make the most of this situation. The Alabama football program is on the ropes and our staff needs to finish them off. WDE

Correct me if I'm wrong but with Chizik didn't the incident involving players robbing a house happen shortly after AU had won the National Championship.?
Can't remember exactly. I do know when we had players shot and killed at a party, Chizik was still here. I believe the guy who shot them was from Montgomery. He was at the party, got pissed off and left, then came back and shot the place up. Just a bad situation all the way around.
The WR killed when Gus was our HC was just an innocent victim as well. From what I remember, he was shot pretty much for no reason at all. His friend put him in his car and drove him to the ER where he passed away. I believe that was at a party at off campus apartments.
From what I remember, all of our players that were victims in those 2 incidents were just innocent bystanders.

Hopefully the guys we hire are working with similar player talent to those Alabama assistants soon.
Should make it a lot easier to move up instead of out.I know assistants would be better with better talent. Whenever constant coordinator changes gets mentioned on this forum, it's always been met with "Saban changes coordinators, Kirby has changed coordinators" and so on. I would just like some continuity. When the same problems are happening under multiple head coaches and multiple staffs, it makes people wonder if the problem may not be squarely on the shoulders of the head coaches, it may just be how the program is ran from the top.
Hopefully putting familiar coaches around Freeze that he goes back years with will help alot but the same was said when Harsin began surrounding himself with all those Boise assistants in year 2 and that was a complete disaster. It's not always a one size fits all when putting staffs together.
I wonder how much it has hurt recruiting the past several years? Position coaches are huge in a recruits life and I wonder if the parents, as well as recruits, look at Auburn and think "Going off of recent history, this coordinator or position coach will likely be gone in 1 to 3 years."
I've mentioned awhile back but Cam Stutts mother, Stephanie Stutts, went onto a Locked on Auburn YouTube video and said Cam played under Gus, Kevin Steele (interim), Harsin, Caddy (interim) and Freeze. That's 5 head coaches he played for and I forget how many O-Line coaches she said. Just sad that it ever got this bad.

Offensive coordinators since 2018
2018 - Chip Lindsey
2019 - Kenny Dillingham
2020 - Chad Morris
2021 - Mike Bobo
2022 - Eric Kiesau (Will Friend 4 games)
2023 - Phillip Montgomery
2024 - ?
Defensive coordinators since 2020
2020 - Kevin Steele 5 years
2021 - Derek Mason
2022 - Jeff Schmedding
2023 - Ron Robert's
2024 - Charles Kelly and ????
I know people have said that Nick Saban goes through coordinators every year. He loses them because they take head coaching jobs or return to the NFL. We lose ours because our teams suck and we have to fire them and pay their buyouts.

Anyone see Hugh’s greatest accomplishment?
in AU Football Forum
Posted · Edited by TeamZero77
I haven't read any comments here belittling this 2024 recruiting class or what the staff accomplished by bringing this class in.
What a few here are pointing out, myself included, is the Auburn athletics PR team has put out multiple things and stats, as fact the past year or so and they're totally wrong. This certain graphic says that "of the active SEC coaches, Hugh Freeze had the highest ranked recruiting class for their first year." That's not true. Kirby Smart's first recruiting class at Georgia ranked 3rd. Brian Kelly's first recruiting class at LSU ranked 5th. Also, if they want to count Sarkisian and Venables as active SEC coaches now, their first classes ranked 3rd and 5th.
That's not belittling Hugh's accomplishments or this staffs accomplishments. What it is doing is calling out our PR team for putting out graphics claiming something as fact when its quickly proven to be wrong.
If Auburn put out a graphic saying "Congrats to Hugh Freeze. His first season at Auburn finished 6-7 overall, which is the best first season by any active SEC coach."
If you call that out as being misinformation, is that also belittling? To alot of people it looks as if our PR/social media team doesn't fact check their stuff or proofread anything. It's been this way for well over a year now.
