Small Town Football

I was talking to my dad the other day and he was telling some old stories about his high school football days in Camp Hill AL. just outside Auburn. He told one that couldn't stop laughing at.

It was the week of the big game and the two stars of the team, two brothers infact, did not show up for school or practice. The coach was panicking and went out to the home to see where they were. The boys' father very blountly told him it was time to get the cotton in and his boys were not coming to school, much less playin' football, until the crop was in.

For the next two days, the students and faculty of Camp Hill High School picked cotton until the crop was in and the two star football players could come back to school and play in the big game.

What are some stories you have about football crazed communities?

i don't have any 'community' stories other than auburn ones....

...however, back in 97, up in Columbia for the USC game, my roomie and i snuck into the Gamecock practice facility the friday nite before the game. he slept in the back of my blazer and i slept on the practice field in the corner of the endzone. i gazed at the stars through the uprights. they had yellow CAUTION tape lining the field, and sometime during the early morning when i was asleep, someone got on the field and stretched the CAUTION tape around me and my sleeping bag. it was pretty funny.

Growing up in Opp, Alabama you learn to hate Andalusia. That rivalry is as big as AU-UA in Covington County. The week of the game the whole town is decorated in Black and Gold. My junior year we had not beaten Anadalusia in 10 years. The towns are only like 10 miles apart, but we got to ride over there on a Greyhound. The stadium opened at 4 that day and by the time we got there the Opp side was already full. We ended up winning in Overtime 24-17. It was like winning the Super Bowl. We got a police escort all the way back to Opp.

When I was in highschool at Mountain Brook we had a big rivalry with Vestavia hills. Vestavia had dominated the rivalry for a decade until my junior year. Joey Jones was hired as head coach and Mailon Kent was our QB. We finally beat Vestavia that year and went on to the 6A state championship where we lost a close game to Jeff Davis.

During my sophomore year at Jeff Davis on the day of the JD/Lee game, two of Lee's players streaked(ran naked for you young pups) down the halls of the school. One was tackled by our security guy, a former lineman for the Green Bay Packers.

I don't believe he played that night. :D:D

My high school equivalent of the Super Bowl was the Piedmont v Centre football game my senior year. Centre was the next town over, in the next county, but was close enough that we had to hear crap constantly about how we had not beaten them in football in twelve years. We won that night 12-0 - totally awesome. I cheered so hard I lost my voice for three days - that must have been what did it - we cheerleaders had SO much to do with that win!! :cheer:

I was yearbook editor and devoted an entire page to a picture of the scoreboard!!! B)

We ran the same play for a TD on three consecutive snaps. And only got ONE TD for our effort. I was playing HB and ran for a 20 yd TD. There was a penalty and we backed up. The QB said that worked once lets try it again. Result another TD and another penalty! We backed up and the QB said they still haven't stopped it let's run it again. We did and once again another TD, but this time, NO PENALTY! I don't think I could have run that darn play again. :(

My senior year up in Cullman, AL we played Etowah High and I am sure yall know this but that was also Carnell's senior year. He ran for 200 and something yards that night and a couple of TD's. The white boys up in Cullman just didnt know what to do with him. Somehow we ended up beating them though, i believe it was one of the only losses Etowah had with Carnell. I knew after that night i couldnt wait to get to AU and see him play for the next four years.

These are cool stories AU family. I can't add a community story due to growing up in Easley, S.C. But I do have a story involving a former Auburn great in Stephen Davis. We played them(Spartanburg) in the third week of the season. We were both 2-0 and each team made it to the State semifinals later that year.

In S.C. you have 1-A, 2-A, 3-A, 4-A, and Big Sixteen. Easley is 4-A and SHS is a Big Sixteen school. Anyway, I played middle LB and Spartanburg ran a sprint draw off of an offset backfield, and Mr. Davis busted through the hole right over my happy butt! All I was able to do was grab a leg hold on until I could get some help..........10 yards later  . The guy was a hoss and still is. Spartanburg won 24-20.

I will never forget the contact that he layed on us that night. I had a big ole headache after that game.

I went K-12 in Hazel Green, Alabama; and I remember every game I went to when the Trojans went 9-2 in 1998. Other than that season, HG football has been pretty much nothing of note.

My sophmore year (on j.v. that is :big: ) we were playing austin and it was 0-0 no team could score. It was about 3 minutes into the 4th quarter and I was a wide out on the right side. We were in the redzone and the qb had checked off into a different route, which was fade routes for both end wideouts. I faked an in route, and broke for a fade and caught an easy 15 yard lob td pass to make the game 7-0. Turns out that was the only td in the game, which was my claim to faim! lol

I went K-12 at a little school (600 students) about 20 miles north of Nashville. Our rival was a school about 20 miles away that had the same colors (until we changed ours) and the exact same floorplan. When you went there for a game it was spooky how similar things were.

Needless to say, it was a big rivalry. As a freshman, I got to play virtually the whole game due to a starter getting injured. We beat them that night for the first time in over 10 years and I got to be part of that. At the time, I didn't think my life could be any better.

Luckily, I paid attention in geography, realized that there was a world beyond the city limits, and got the hell out of there. Looking back now, people take that stuff WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too seriously.

Ok, here's a good one. My Junior year in high school we had a great defense and won enough games to win the conference and make it to the class 2A playoffs. We had virtually no offense or a kicker.

We won our first game 6-2 on a punt return on the muddiest field I've ever seen and won our second game 12-7 in a snow storm. The semifinal game was against a Catholic school from St Louis. Priory was their name I think. Anyway, it's late fourth quarter and we're up 6-0. They have the ball driving it down our throats for the go-ahead score. I'm playing linebacker and they run a little dump pass and one of the other LB's drills the receiver and the ball pops out and lands right in my arms. Well, even back then I could have used a calendar to record my 40-yard dash time but I just knew there was nothing but green grass in front of me and I was about to put my signature on this game. Well I did.

I took about two steps and one of their lineman blasted me, I fumbled the ball, they recovered and about two plays later were celebrating their 7-6 victory.

I can still see my mother booing me as I walked off the field after that fumble. I missed school for about a week and never set foot on a football field(as a player) again.

 Dang Dubb. Your own mama??

I would have booed you, but your own mama? :D

Anyone catch the kid from Memphis who missed the two free throws with no time left to send them to the dance?
