NCAA to ban Indian mascots at bowl games

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - The NCAA stated on Tuesday that it will ban the use of Indian mascots at bowl games, starting with the 2006-07 season.

In early August, the NCAA announced that it has adopted a new policy that prohibits colleges and universities from displaying hostile and abusive racial/ethnic/national origin mascots, nicknames or imagery at any of the 88 NCAA championships.

The NCAA Executive Committee later announced that Florida State, Utah and Central Michigan were three universities discarded from a list of 18 schools subjected to stipulations because they use Native American mascots, nicknames and imagery in their intercollegiate athletic programs.

"NCAA bylaws require that all licensed bowls must 'comply with the NCAA’s principles for the conduct of intercollegiate athletics,' as set forth in the NCAA Constitution, which contains basic principles for the value of cultural diversity and forms the basis for the mascot policy," the NCAA said in a statement.

"While the NCAA licenses bowls, including the BCS, it does not administer them or select participants. The NCAA does administer football championships in all other divisions and will apply the mascot guidelines to those championships, beginning in 2006. The NCAA policy restricting the use of Native American mascots and imagery at all championships goes into effect at the conclusion of the review process window on February 1, 2006."

I don't understand this -- doesn't this basically say they're excluded for the same reason they're banning them?
