I ranked all the major SEC teams since 1970, eliminating all teams with more than one loss. The rating is based on scoring margin, strength of schedule and win pct against D1 opponents with a winning record. Here is my top ten...

Rating... Year.... Team

122.70... 1996.... Florida

119.22... 1971.... Alabama

114.19... 2002.... Georgia

113.50... 1995.... Florida

113.36... 2004.... Auburn

113.20... 1998.... Tennessee

113.09... 1983.... Auburn

112.46... 2003.... LSU

111.07... 1973.... Alabama

110.42... 1978.... Alabama

1992 Alabama team finished at #15. 1972 Auburn team was #21. The 1993 Auburn team was #26 and the 1980 UGA team was #27. Strength of schedule hurt the undefeated 92 Bama, 93 Aub and 80 UGA teams.

Who would be in your top ten or who would be the best?

I think those stats speak the truth. Honorable mention:

1984 Forida was a powerhouse (finished #2 nationally)...also one of the best teams money could buy.

1999 Bama was darn good.

'86-'89 AU teams were excellent and often unlucky

Liger forgot to add that all of his data comes from facts collected, and entered into a data base for research. No bias at all :P

I disagree with '99 Bama, the SEC was down big time. Florida had one of their worst teams under Steve, UT was solid but not great after winning the NC and they still beat Bama. Auburn and LSU were non factors in the West that year, but Bama did beat Miss. State's only 10 win team ever. And darn good teams don't lose 3 games in a season, one being to La. Tech on a hail mary.

That 1995 Florida team was good, but after the but whuppin' laid on them by the Huskers, I don't know if I'd have the ranked that high.

Id have to rank the 92 Bama and 93 Auburn in the top ten. Even though SOS was low...those two teams were awesome.

That 92 defense was sick.

BG,

I've been watching college football since the late 70's and the 1992 Alabama defense is the best I've ever seen out of the SEC and the 1988 Auburn defense was the second best.

30 pts per game / 215 rushing and 219 passing per game

Reggie Slack QB: 168-279-9-2230yds-9tds

*4 of his 9 TD's came against Kansas

Stacy Danley: 877yds-179-7tds / 4.89 avg

James Joseph: 674yds-110-5tds / 6.13 avg

Good production out of our rotating tailbacks.

Freddy Weygand: 38 receptions-573yds-3tds

The 1988 offense was balanced but very blue collar. Of the 12 opponents we faced that season, 6 had winning records. Our offense averaged only 12.8 pts per game against FSU, UGA, Ala, LSU and Florida. We did hang 38 on a very good 10-2 Southern Miss team.

Our defense held FSU to 13 pts and LSU to 7 pts and we lost both games.

I was at both of those games. Because both of those games were outside of the confines of Jordan Hare, I had an aversion to going to away games after that cause we always seemed to lose when I attended an away game. I finally was able to break that curse when I attended the AU vs. UT game in Knoxville in 2004. Man what a way to break a curse. :big:

Yeah well Slug, other non-Bammers thought Bama '99 was darn good too...they finished 8th in the nation after the '99 season. Maybe the '99 Bama pick also isn't so outrageous if you rewind your '99 videos, stick the stats in your pocket for a minute, watch Shawn Alexander and his o-line in most of those games, check out the 35-34 loss to Mich. in the Orange Bowl (one of the 3 losses) and review the 34-7 ass-whipping laid on the "down" Florida team in the SEC championship game. This board gets closer to TI every year. Easiest thing in the world is to rip somebody else's picks. Got some of your own?

I am surprised how high the 2002 UGA team is

230593[/snapback]

SL02,

The biggest difference between the 02 UGA team and the 04 AU team was the total number of D1 opponents with a winning record. Auburn competed against 5 teams going 5-0 and UGA competed against 11, going 10-1.

Of course, Auburn's "quality" opponents had a win pct of .790 and UGA's was only .615 but UGA's overall opponents had a win pct of .569 to Auburn's .546.

IMO, the fact that UGA had 11 competitive opponents on their schedule was pretty darn impressive.

IMO, it's difficult to compare a SEC team with three losses to another SEC team with 1 or no losses, which is the major reason why the 1999 Crimson Tide won't get much credit, compared to other great SEC teams. In fact, it's the only reason why eliminated SEC teams with more than 1 loss when I made my comparison. I'd say the same thing about the 1997 Auburn Tigers had we beat UT in the SECCG game but lost our BCS bowl game, finishing 10-3.

However, if I compare all the major SEC teams since 1980, the 1999 Bama team finishes at #15 on the list because of their strength of schedule. Their opponents combined for a win pct of .654 which was tops on the list. Bama was 7-3 against opponents with a winning record that year.

Of course, six of their 13 games were decided by 7 pts or less, which makes it difficult to say they were a dominating team compared to the other great SEC teams over the last 25 years.

If we're going back that far, I'd have to say Bamar's team of the '79 Sugar Bowl year would have to be way up there too.
