That's the home of Louisiana-Monroe, a 21-14 winner over Alabama, a victory in some ways just as stunning as Appalachian State's win at Michigan in the season's opening week. Naturally, the win in Tuscaloosa lit up the campus in Monroe. Several hundred fans were on hand when the team buses, escorted by police cars with lights flashing and sirens blaring, arrived late Saturday night. The quote of the night, according to the Monroe News-Star World, came from Louisiana-Monroe student Lane Welch. "It is obvious here that everyone hates Nick Saban, and to have two Louisiana schools beat Alabama (LSU was the other), well, that is just great," Welch said. Added Casey Keene, another student, "This is what Nick Saban gets for messing with the boot state." Meanwhile, back in Tuscaloosa, Saban had a couple of days to stew before his rambling stream-of-consciousness press conference on Monday. He called the loss "a catastrophic event," referencing Pearl Harbor and 9/11. "Changes in history usually occur after some kind of catastrophic event," Saban said. "There are reasons that things occur. To have players suspended, guys missing things for not doing it the right way, not practicing hard, not finishing plays, you get humiliated. "You talk about alcoholics and how they never change until you hit rock bottom. ... Then they make a commitment to change. Our players need to do that right now." The most shocking stat from the loss was Alabama didn't score for the last 42 minutes of the game. Alabama cornerback Simeon Castille said Saban did his best in practice all last week to get his team's attention. "Coach Saban is out there yelling and trying to get us going," Castille said. "He shouldn't have to do that. That should be something that the players are doing." Question, while we all debate the troubling 9/11, WWII references --- I notice again something that has gone largely overlooked here (or maybe I missed it) ....
