augolf1716 21,109
Always good to see us get 3 All SEC in but especially good to get Freshman of the Year. AUBURN, Ala. -- Ben Schlottman became the first freshman in Auburn history to be named All-SEC first-team while sophomore Matt Gilchrist was named All-SEC first-team and junior Michael Johnson was an All-SEC second-team pick, the SEC Office announced Thursday. Schlottman was also named the SEC Freshman of the Year and Freshman All-SEC honors. It is the first time Auburn has had two All-SEC first-team selections in the same season since 2002. Schlottman's team-low 69.67 stroke average is the third-best overall in the SEC this season and tops of all freshmen. It currently ranks as the lowest single season stroke average in school history. In 18 rounds, he has 16 rounds at par or better, 14 sub-par and eight in the 60s. The Advance, N.C., native has four top-five finishes this year with two runner-up finishes at the Schenkel Invitational and the SEC Championship, the best finish by a freshman in Auburn history. He is Auburn's fourth SEC Freshman of the Year following Hiroshi Matsuo (1988), Jimmy Green (1989) and Shane Supple (1990). Gilchrest, a 2014 All-SEC second-team selection, has a 70.41 stroke average, currently the second-lowest single season stroke average in school history and is eighth-best in the SEC. The Southlake, Texas, native was named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch list in March, and was named SEC Golfer of the Week following his 12-under fifth place finish at the Amer Ari Invitational. In 32 rounds, he has 23 rounds at par or better, 18 sub-par and 12 in the 60s, all team-highs. He was co-medalist at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate and had five other top-5 finishes in 11 events played. Johnson, who ranks 10th in the SEC with a 71.19 stroke average, won his first collegiate tournament at the Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner in March, and also earned co-medalist honors at the Gary Koch Invitational. Under sixth-year head coach Nick Clinard, Auburn has produced four All-SEC first-team selections, nine second team, six Freshman All-SEC and one SEC Freshman of the Year. All-SEC honors were chosen by the league's head coaches. Ties were not broken.
