Auburn police are investigating an alleged assault that sent a 19-year-old Auburn University student to the hospital and resulted in a 20-year-old suspect being detained and questioned, Auburn Police Division officials said Thursday.

The incident involving the 19- and 20-year-old males, whom Auburn police are not identifying due to the ongoing investigation, happened at about 2 a.m. near the area of Toomer’s Corner and Magnolia Avenue, APD Chief Tommy Dawson said.

Dawson said when police arrived, they found the 19-year-old lying on the ground conscious, but bleeding from the nose. After getting a description of the vehicle the 20-year-old suspect left the scene in, police located and detained him.

While declining to fully disclose what led up to the assault, Dawson said that after a verbal exchange between the 19-year-old pedestrian and the 20-year-old escalated, the 20-year-old got out of his vehicle and struck the 19-year-old with his fists before getting back in the car and leaving.

“We have identified the suspect and are just waiting to see if the parents of the victim wish to press charges,” said Dawson.

The 20-year-old suspect was not charged and was later released.

The 19-year-old was first taken to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment before being transferred to UAB Hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery, Dawson said.[\quote]
