Our ability to disrupt and create turnovers is the difference in being a very good defense and being at the level of Bammer. Some of it is talent level, some of it scheme. We’ll see how/if Steele adjusts.

From what I've read about him, I believe our 10th coach was hired, in part, because of his expertise in this area.

I had the same thought. KP has been on the field during all of our games all season long - doesn't strike me as someone who is in trouble. I can' t think of any other player Gus has let stand on the sidelines who ultimately got dismissed from the team.

Unfortunately, I can... our last top running back to be sent packing.

  3. For those freaking out about Jib, he took the time on signing day to trash talk those signing with schools not named Auburn, especially those on the O-Line, on Twitter. I don't doubt his loyalties at all. He just does things his way and doesn't let the recruiting system dictate to him. I actually appreciate that vs. the guys who take it seriously and play games.

Just a follow up.. I talked to Asa Martin last night at our hs basketball game.  Showing off his new AU swag, he sounded very excited about everything. He his a hard working, wonderful young man and we told him we would see him again on the Plains soon (A-day).  I love seeing that he might be able to continue to wear the #20 jersey.  Life is Good, War Eagle!!

Like seeing Kam in a non-contact Jersey... makes you question the "he's in trouble" storyline a little. Of course seeing Kerryon makes one feel less enthusiastic, but hopefully it's just precautionary.

Also love that Asa is sporting the Carl Lawson look of seriousness on his face.

With Gatewood, as you said, great strong runner, but has to pass better than 60% and learn to read the D and field when the D is playing man or zone. If he has the QB learning of passing decision making, then we are in great shape.

the problem probably is, he didn't get any of that in HS.

The biggest upside that we have with Gatewood's need to learn is, unlike all of our other QBs with promise in the past 10 years, he will actually be able to spend a year under a really good QB and learn from him.

If you look at our history, the plan was to have Frazier spend a year under Cam, but Cam was too good and the NFL snatched him up. Then Jeremy was under Nick, who was a completely different style of QB. Sean was supposed to follow Jeremy but was called into service early. Now, FINALLY, we have a solid, stable QB who can mentor his successor.

In my experience, no matter how good the coach is, peer mentoring is invaluable.

No Just guys who left & did not mesh with Auburn who were expected to contribute this past season.

Sorry E... forgot you needed a sarcasm emoji.  My point was, about 3 weeks ago, they probably all started wishing they were still on the team and making a championship run.

    2. We have sucked at throwing any type of screen for what seems like 2 decades... Ryan is a great athlete, Jarrett is a great QB, but most importantly, it appears we spend a ton of practice time working on those...the timing and ball placement is huge.  Glad to see it become a strength.

I can't believe in all of the praise about those screens that no one has mentioned the down field blocking. That is one of the main reasons these haven't worked as well since 2010 and one of the main reasons they do now. When Davis has to juke one guy instead of 2-3, it makes it a lot more likely to succeed.

Question for anyone.  What does GM mean when he says "by design"?  Because, I don't think that phrase means what he thinks it means.  Inconceivable I know.

Note, I paraphrased. I wasn't watching the conference when I wrote that.

That being said, what I got from it is that there is a different plan for each team based on their strengths/weaknesses and what it will take to beat them. If we can beat a team on the ground, easily, you know we're going to because of the "three things that can happen when you pass".

Here's an interesting thought. One of the reasons that we limited long routes last weak may have bent to minimize the number of potential hits Stidham would have to take.

So, he doesn't throw long in the game to keep Clemson in the dark about our plan.  But, he then gives his plan away in a press conference saying we didn't throw long on purpose?  OK, he's way smarter than me if that works.

He didn't say it was to keep them in the dark, he said that we used different plane for different games and Nate Craig Meyers was less sctive by design, but will be very active in future game plans. You can interpret that however you feel like you should.

Thanks! I missed the press conference. Still no clue why we would not at least show the long ball as a possibility. Give Clemson something to think about. I suppose it goes back to what some have stated about not showing your hand. Just not sure I agree with that tactic.

    Well... we tried... incomplete.

In about the same amount of PT Joey's numbers were much better that his teams other QB. It would seem like the team would be better with Joey as the starter period. He was responsible for 4 TD's the other QB 1 and Joey had twice as much total yardage and no interceptions.

Hopefully the coach will realize that he needs to put team above individual player and give Joey more play time when it's on the line.

And several long gains - including KM's first TD, I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong and that wasn't a first-down run-up-the-gut that broke open). KJ may have had one, too.

No... that was the first play of the drive and was a very different blocking scheme then the first down, up the gut runs we do after making a first down.

Yep, the ole run it up the middle after a first down for no yardage or a loss. That and the predictable reliance on running on 1st down rather than passing. Drives me insane, and I'm pretty sure Venables has a bead on it.

Interesting thing is, I don't believe they ever stopped us on that last week. As I recall, we got no less than 3 yards anytime we ran it. I'm still not a fan, and I hope we ran it so much because we knew it didn't matter against Ga Southern and we wanted to give Clemson false video about what we were really going to show them. None the less, the three yards or less, last week, was 3 yards most of the time.

  14. Love that you brought up Marlon beefing his next assignment after being called for a face mask (looked like a shoulder pad on my tv). That's something that stood out to me. Georgia Southern got most of their yards after we got called for something. That tells me that we need to learn to play with the same fire but not let our emotions work against us too, especially  if we think the call is wrong.
