Joe Whitt Jr. will serve as the Washington Commanders’ defensive coordinator for the 2024 season, the NFL team announced on Monday.

An Auburn High School alumnus who spent two seasons as a walk-on wide receiver at Auburn before injuries turned him into a student assistant working with the Tigers’ pass-catchers, Whitt has been the Dallas Cowboys’ secondary coach and pass-game coordinator for the past three seasons.

Whitt is coming to Washington with Dan Quinn. The Commanders chose the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator as their new head coach last week.

Whitt also worked with Quinn during the 2020 season, when Quinn was the Atlanta Falcons’ head coach and Whitt was the team’s secondary coach and pass-game coordinator.

Since his two seasons as a student assistant at Auburn, Whitt has spent 22 seasons in coaching. Fourteen of those seasons have been on the coaching staffs of Mike McCarthy with the Green Bay Packers and Cowboys.

Whitt was Green Bay’s cornerbacks coach when the Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in Super Bowl XLV on Feb. 6, 2011.
