Cox, Taylor held out of practice

Monday, September 26, 2005

AUBURN -- Quarterback Brandon Cox didn't practice on Sunday, a day after he was hospitalized with a stomach virus and missed the Western Kentucky game.

Cox, who said he felt much better, attended practice and watched in workout clothes.

"He's OK, but they want him to take it easy for another day or two," Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said.

Other injury news is not as encourag ing.

Receiver Courtney Taylor missed another practice with an ankle injury. Tuberville said that doctors are hopeful he can play on Saturday, but coaches want him back in practice by Tuesday or Wednesday so he can familiarize himself with the game plan.

Defensive end Stanley McClover played only one snap on Saturday before retreating to the sidelines when his sore ankle started giving him trouble. McClover all but guaranteed he would play Saturday against the Gamecocks.

Nose guard Josh Thompson, who has also been bothered by an ankle injury, said he was 90 percent and expected to play Saturday.

Tight end Tommy Trott (neck) did not practice on Sunday after missing the Western Kentucky game.

--HONOREES: Running back Brad Lester was named offensive player of the week by coaches after carrying 10 times for 64 yards Saturday against Western Kentucky.

"He played consistently on special teams and at running back," Tuberville said. "He's getting better every week. He gives us that extra speed."

Defensive end Marquies Gunn was named defensive player of the week. Kicker John Vaughn and holder Matthew Motley were given specials teams honors.

"John and Motley had a couple of high snaps and they did a good job of getting those down," Tuberville said.

--THE POLLS: Auburn sneaked into the coaches' poll this week at No. 24, tied with Georgia Tech, who beat the Tigers handily on opening night.

The Tigers are just outside of the top 25 of The Associated Press rankings and Harris Interactive poll, which was re leased for the first time Sunday night.

The Harris poll uses a panel of 113 former coaches, players and administrators and former and current media and will be factored into the BCS formula to determine the participants in the national championship game.

Tuberville said he likes the fact that the poll is starting later in the season.

"I'm an advocate and will be and always have been that there's no reason to even have polls other than to have something to talk about," Tuberville said. "If a poll is going to count toward the BCS, you should not start that poll until Oct. 1. You can have all the polls you want, but the ones that are going to count toward the BCS should not even be voted on until Oct. 1."

--ON THE SUBS: The days of wholesale substitution ended after the Western Kentucky game, but offensive line coach Hugh Nall still wants to keep his players fresh.

"I'll go in with the idea of substituting depending on what the weather's like, the heat factor and how the guys are play ing," Nall said. "If the first group is getting the job done, we'll leave them in there for a couple of series."

Nall said the two unusual weeks against Ball State and Western Kentucky hadn't altered the starting lineup, meaning Jonathan Palmer failed to unseat Tim Duckworth at right guard.

--DEPARTURES: Auburn redshirt freshman tight end Charles Mullen has left the team to concentrate on academics, Tuberville confirmed Sunday.

Mullen, a California native, had trouble moving up the crowded depth chart at tight end.

--ARRIVALS: Defensive lineman Kareem Crowell of Godby High in Tallahassee, Fla., committed to the Tigers Sunday night.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound tackle also had offers from N.C. State, Arkansas, Clemson, Georgia and North Carolina.

Crowell is Auburn's 11th commitment. He told AuburnSports.com that he plans to visit the Plains for the first time this weekend, but that he might also take other visits.

Anyone have any concerns with BC missing practice time? Is he going to practice today? I know it was discussed in great detail about him missing practice time leading up to GT with his sore shoulder. I do believe that it had some impact on the overall performance during that game mainly with timing, defensive reads etc. Any impact this week?

Well it sounded like he could have gone sunday but the coaches wanted to rest him. I'd say he'll be back at practice now 2 days later. Certinaly won't be any excuse for losing if we do that seeing as SC won't even have their starting QB.
