AUman43 5
BUFORD 20, GAC 7 King corralled Wolves' defense limits Spartans star to 54 yards in game By Carroll Rogers The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 09/30/06 Before Friday's GAC-Buford showdown, the banner hanging over the visiting railing at Greater Atlanta Christian looked a little like wishful thinking. "Caleb who?" Caleb King, that's who, the nationally known running back for GAC. Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was standing on the sideline ready to watch him run. But by the end of Buford's 20-7 domination over GAC, it looked like Tuberville could just as easily be there to look at Buford's defensive linemen. The push Buford got up front, led by Omar Hunter, Dallas Lee and Brandon McEachern —- learn their names —- helped limit King to 8 yards in the first half and 54 yards in the game. "We were just trying to get to the ball," Buford linebacker T.J. Pridemore said. "We know he likes to cut back and break tackles, but he's not going to break too many tackles if he's got three guys waiting for him." King, the guy who might have turned the tide in this series, instead fell victim along with his new teammates to Buford for the seventh straight time. The Spartans are 2-10 in the series. "They stopped me," King said simply afterward. King, who only had 12 carries and made his biggest play on a halfback pass, had to turn the spotlight over to Buford tailback Quentin Cantrell. Cantrell used a big push of his own from Buford's offensive line to rush for 142 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. No. 2 Buford (5-0, 3-0) has won 38 consecutive region games since November 2000. GAC (4-1, 2-1), ranked No. 3, will try to rebound against Lovett and will have to do it without Division I prospect at center, T-Bob Hebert. Hebert separated his shoulder, coach Jimmy Chupp said. He had to leave the game at the end of the second quarter, then for good near the end of the game. Chupp said Hebert would miss the Lovett game and beyond that they would have to see. Without Hebert full speed, GAC seemed to abandon the run game early and didn't fare much better with the pass, watching quarterback Lee Chapple get sacked five times. "We had trouble up front with them and we expected to have trouble with them," Chupp said. "We have good stuff [to run]; we just didn't have a chance to do it." GAC tried to steal some momentum. The Spartans went for it on fourth down in the first half, got its only touchdown on a halfback pass from King and afterward tried an onside kick. Two of the gambles led to Buford touchdowns. The only Buford flinch came after King's 9-yard pass to Johnathan Dunagan cut to 14-7 with 1:35 to go in the third quarter. But the Wolves recovered the onside attempt and scored seven plays later on a Demetris Murray 11-yard run. Atlanta-Journal Constitution. Sat. Sept 30 Looks like Caleb got corralled. Maybe we should be recruiting McEachern, Lee and Omar.
