Keys to the game

a. Pick your poison – Going into a key conference matchup, it’s great to step into the coaches’ meeting room and start to construct your game plan for a defense like the Hogs’ ‘D’. Can they stop the run? Debatable at best. Cedric Benson is only one man, but he went over two bills on the youthful Hog defense. Think what Auburn’s OC Al Borges can do with two stud running backs – Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown. But, then again, Florida’s Chris Leak sliced up the Hogs like they were the afternoon cookout main course. Now, that’s not to mean that Jason Campbell is in the same league as Leak, but he’s been as consistent this year as any quarterback in the SEC. Right now, there are a lot of coaches in this conference that wouldn’t mind trading for Campbell’s clutch play this year (well, except for maybe Arkansas…and maybe Florida). With the debate sure to rage on into the night, Borges has the best of all worlds right in his hands. Where a guy like Vince Young couldn’t really take advantage of running play action against Arkansas, Campbell can. So, keep an eye on whether the Hogs safeties ‘bite’ on runs early in the game and how long it takes for Campbell to go over their heads for a deep six.

b. The Williams Family – Auburn DC Gene Chizik had to be scratching his head as to what he was going to do about his linebacker position prior to this year. Karlos Dansby and Dontarrious Thomas were multi-year starters and all-conference players, to boot. But, in their stead have stepped in two of the best players in the SEC West, Antarrious Williams and Travis Williams. These guys have been all over the place. Against LSU and Tennessee, the Williamses were able to run freely to the football and help the Tiger defense dominate both matchups. Essentially from the second quarter of the LSU game on, the Auburn defense has given up 23 points in 15 quarters. But, they’ll get their biggest test on Saturday against Hog QB Matt Jones. Where Jones can be a thorn in the side of these two speedy linebackers is when he escapes contain, and one of the Williams boys will have to come up to slow him down. Tackling #9 in the open field has proven to be a task that has felled many a defensive player. Watch how well the Tigers’ linebackers are tackling on first contact. They’ll need some contain help from their defensive ends, but they’re fast enough to make up for any contain errors. Then, they just have to corral the Magician. Easier done than said. Or, is it the other way around?

c. Air Hog – One of the problems facing Chizik is how to use Junior Rosegreen against this Arkansas offense. If the Tigers let it happen, the Hogs can run all day with Jones and his gaggle of backs, so Rosegreen is vital to the run defense. However, the Arkansas passing game is not a slouch by any means. The Auburn secondary has played as well as a unit can play, and they play very well together. They communicate very well, but the Hogs can throw some good athletes at Rosegreen and his mates. Steven Harris, Marcus Monk and Stephen Baker are capable of running good routes, but also beating guys deep. In addition, you take a guy like DeCori Birmingham, a former receiver, and run him on routes out of the backfield, and that’s another component that the Tigers’ secondary must contend with on Saturday. A major key in this game is how the receivers are able to find space in the scramble drill, essentially. With Jones as good as he is getting out of the pocket and beating pressure, the Hog receivers have to work the scramble drill to perfection to get open (if you ran deep, come back to the QB, if you ran short, go long). The Tigers’ have a skilled secondary that doesn’t get beat often, but they’ve not seen an offense like this one all season.

Conclusion: The Hogs are kind of like Wayne Fontes, former Detroit Lions head coach. Every time you want to count them out, they make a comeback for the ages. Down 35-7 at half of the Florida game, they come storming back, only to have a Channing Crowder pick ruin any hopes of a meltdown of enormous proportions. Remember last year’s comeback against the same Florida team? What about the Alabama game on the road? No one gives the Hogs a shot, but they’ll play very well; however, this is an Auburn team that is on a mission. It doesn’t matter who they play, they’re playing with more heart than any team in college football. But, don’t be misled, this is a good, fast, athletic and good (wait, sorry, already said that) Tiger team. At home, it’s Auburn’s game. Auburn – 24 vs. Arkansas - 16

I agree with what the article said...Our runningbacks need to have a big day to open up the passing game. I dont think too many screens will work in this game, but more long routes should be more useful (see the florida game).

Auburn 28

Arkansas 24

Hold you guys under 200 yards rushing and win the turnover margin. Our LBs have let us down this year. They played much better against Fla. vs. the run but then we had the 2nd qtr meltdown in the secondary. I honestly don't know what the expect. Your two RBs impress the hell out of me. C Williams is one hard running TB. Look forward to Saturday. www.hogville.net

Some other key points:

Ark is most dangerous on broken plays - Matt Jones can kill a team that is not disiplined and does not keep to their assignments. We have to contain the qb and the dbs have to maintain coverage on the receivers because MJ can/will throw on the run. Our defensive ends and lbs must contain and force the qb to make the throw.

Our defense must TACKLE - not that we have had any problems but now is not the time to arm tackle.

Ark is vulnerable to the mid/long pass. We must establish our risk to them by trying and hitting some.

Our backs and tightends must be utilized more in the middle passing game not just on wheel routes and bootlegs. Those are and have been great plays for us but forcing the hogs lbs and safetys to back up and maintain their position for just a couple of seconds can greatly benefit our running game and outside passing routes.

And lastly but as with every game, the special teams must play well and we need no turnovers.

By the way, Ark has had an off week - CHN will undoubtedly have some special plays (trick) just for us.

As long as we play our game, keep a balanced attack on offense, contain Matt Jones, and don't make any mistakes, then we'll win!!! But, that could be said for every game we play so let's just go out and BEAT THE HOGS!!!!

The keys to this game are simple!

1. Go into this game as if it were your last and play with reckless abandon

2 Contain Matt Jones and make him throw quickly

2. Contain the running game with Birmingham, et al.

3. Exectute our kick coverage and special teams including the kicking game.

4. Sound play by our QB, WR's and OL. THis is the KEY for Auburn to put up more points then them.

5. Take care of the football!

6. Finally, don't panic if we get behind. We have been there before and we can do it again. Just be calm, poised, and take care of business........WDE!

#1 is exactly what we don't need to do because we need to do #2. If our defense plays with "reckless abandon" Matt Jones will tear us a part. We need to keep our assignments and make sure he can't make something out of nothing. That means McGlover, Eddins, etc need to stay home when he starts to run around, making sure there is no room to reverse field or cut back.
