Bohn, from Cincy, got the USC AD job that everybody though Allen Greene would get. USC writers are shocked because all of them thought it was Greene who was the choice

If they all are shocked that it is not Greene then I bet Greene was going to accept the job. He may be looking for a way out of the mess that is Auburn Athletics and how they "run" things.

By DAN WEBER

Imagine you're a USC Athletics Department employee and you go to sleep Thursday night with these words ringing in your ear: "We have our AD, it's [Auburn's] Allen Greene."

And then you wake up to the breaking news that it's not going to be Allen Greene or anyone else rumored like Washington State's Patrick Chun or Boston College's Martin Jarmond or even retired Florida AD Jeremy Foley.

Succeeding Lynn Swann, whose resignation was announced in September, will be Cincinnati AD Mike Bohn, last seen in these parts when he was getting fired at Colorado in 2013 as the Buffaloes were struggling at the start of their Pac-12 run.

Bohn survived that setback, hiring on at Cincinnati after the program had decided to make a big push under previous AD Whit Babcock, now at Virginia Tech, to make a big facilities and budgeting push in order to make the transition from the Big East to a hoped-for spot in the Big 12, much as Louisville made the move to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

But under Bohn, that was not to be and UC remains in American Athletic Conference where football has flourished under Bohn hire Luke Fickell, the former Ohio State interim coach. Bohn, 58, a native of Boulder, Colo., and former baseball/football player at Kansas, has been an AD at Idaho, San Diego State and has reportedly shown an interest in a number of AD positions since arriving at Cincinnati.

He would be the second non-USC football player as Trojans AD, ironically following in the footsteps of another former Cincinnati AD, Mike McGee, who served from 1984 through 1993 in a tumultous time for USC football under coaches Ted Tollner, Larry Smith and the return of John Robinson.
Bohn's arrival at Cincinnati is highlighted by the more than $170 million in facility upgrades to Nippert Stadium ($86 million) and Fifth-Third Bank Arena ($87 million) although much of that under way before his arrival.

But his hiring of Fickell, whose Bearcats have maintained a solid Top 25 ranking this season and have beaten UCLA the last two seasons, is his top accomplishment. Should Urban Meyer not be the next USC head coach, the sense is that it's hard to imagine Bohn going in any direction except Fickell if he gets that hire and Clay Helton, as is rumored and almost expected by the USC fan base, is not retained.

One coaching loss for Bohn at Cincinnati was, also coincidentally, basketball coach Mick Cronin, who was hired away by UCLA in the spring. As is the case for every USC AD candidate, the question is always asked about an Urban Meyer connection. And there is one -- or maybe more. Meyer himself is a Cincinnati grad and former football player there. And his son, Nate, is a sophomore baseball player at UC and Urban was in attendance at his games this spring. So there's that.

Questions will arise about Bohn's previous Pac-12 stint at Colorado where he was fired after continuing problems with the football program in 2013 after his disastrous hirings of Dan Hawkins (16-33 record at CU) and Jon Embree (4-21 at CU) before hiring the moderately successful Mike MacIntyre who made it six seasons in Boulder. But the bottom line at CU was apparently the inability to turn the move to the Pac-12 into the kind of money required to make that transition work and there, Bohn wasn't able to cut it.

Cincinnati certainly considers Bohn to USC a done deal with the report that an interim AD has been chosen for the Bearcats -- senior associate AD Maggie McKinley.

Despite the progress in baseball with an NCAA tourney bid and a much-improved women's basketball program, it's not all been a success for UC under Bohn. The failure to get the Big 12 to consider the Bearcats when the Big East broke up is the primary one.

The Big 12 decided not to expand, saying none of the candidates brought enough to the table to make it worthwhile. But the improvements required for that bid have put UC at the top of the class in the Group of Five, something Bohn has been able to promote successfully.

What, besides football, is a mess in Auburn Athletics (and some would argue football is not a mess just yet.....very very close lol..but not Arkansas bad. lol).

Well thank God he is gone now but that clown Leath wanted Pearl fired until AG stepped in and saved the day. Basketball and Baseball are not a mess on the surface because there is really good coaches in place. I am just talking about how things are run behind the scenes for yeaaaaaaaaaaaaars. With so many different people having a hand in things.

So far I think AG has done a great job!  Would hate to see him go.  Leath was a disaster!!!!  While I think Gus is still salvageable the HUGE buyout is on Leath.  Some many different options could have rewarded Gus after 2017 without making it impossible to cut him in subsequent years.  And remember.....the current coaches were hired on JJ's watch!

Maybe or maybe not but USCw was certainly not the answer....have you paid any attention to what they have gone through in recent years?  ....makes AU look quite organized and peaceful by comparison.  Greene has a good job and probably knows it.....certainly compared to USCw unless he were to be craving the California lifestyle, cost of living and taxes.   Their apparent list of rejections should tell you a lot about the issues at that school.

Seems that many AU people have no idea what life is like outside of the school or the state of Alabama. ….thinking that AU is some kind of uniquely bad situation....which it is not.

Out of reactions, but agree...yes...he would have walked into a mess.  That said, I am very relieved, too.
