As bad as CMO is I would still post him up if they are dumb enough to put Sears on a 6'5 guy.  Surely he could score over Sears.

I don't expect to see CMO getting 10 to 15 in a close game.  How many minutes did he get against A&M?

    11 min

  2. It’s been a great stretch of wins here lately. I wouldn’t worry about the rankings just yet. Our schedule offers us ample opportunity to prove it to the voters. Our first two conference games are at Arkansas and home against A&M. If we win both of those there is no doubt we’ll be into the top 15, maybe even top 10.

Why JUCO coach says Chad Baker-Mazara will be key piece for Auburn basketball next season

    Richard Silva, Montgomery Advertiser
    4–5 minutes

AUBURN — Northwest Florida State College basketball coach Steve DeMeo got lucky. So did Chad Baker-Mazara, but he just didn't know it yet.

DeMeo, who returned to the Raiders in April 2022 after spending a few seasons as an assistant at St. Johns and East Carolina, was the coach at NWF from 2013-19. He led the Raiders to a 170-27 record over that period and left on a streak of five straight Panhandle Conference championships. He's made a living off not only putting players into higher levels of college basketball, but also winning while doing it.

Just because NWF is a junior college doesn't mean DeMeo treats the program like it's worth any less.

LOOKING AHEAD: What Auburn basketball's latest additions tell us about 2023-24 version of the Tigers

POTENTIAL RENOVATIONS: What AD John Cohen is saying about Auburn football, basketball facility upgrades

"I think a lot of times high-majors sign a guy and they’re like, ‘Well, why didn’t you run more stuff for him?’ " DeMeo told Montgomery Advertiser this week. "We try to run this like a real team. We don’t just want to cater to one guy. Winning is important to us, as well. I think winning translates everywhere.”

That might've been what Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl was thinking when he offered the 6-foot-7, 190-pound Baker-Mazara a scholarship. Baker-Mazara is presumably Pearl's last big pickup of the offseason, joining transfers Denver Jones (Florida International) and Chaney Johnson (Alabama-Huntsville), along with five-star freshman Aden Holloway out of Prolific Prep in Napa, California.

Baker-Mazara's shooting splits are staggering. He made 48.8% of his shots during his lone season with the Raiders, which included connecting on 46.9% of his triples. DeMeo assured those numbers aren't inflated, either: "We’re all blessed with something in life," DeMeo said. "… He’s blessed as a guy who can make jump shots."

Knowing that, it might be shocking to see Baker-Mazara only averaged 15.2 points per game, which doesn't even crack the top 150 among JUCO players last season. With his efficiency, why wasn't he featured more in the offense, especially at the JUCO level?

“I try to have a balanced roster," DeMeo said. "I don’t like one guy to have 25 or 20 and everyone else scores six. We try to have four or five double-digit scorers. ... We try to balance the roster, we try to get guys to do a little bit of everything. We like versatility and Chad was versatile.

Colorado State guard Isaiah Rivera (23) controls the ball as San Diego State guard Chad Baker-Mazara (20) guards in the first half at Moby Arena on Friday, Feb. 4, 2022.

"He defended well, he rebounded well. Not only did he make shots, but he made his free throws. He did a little of everything. He probably could’ve been more of a focal point, but we are a super-talented roster."

DeMeo not only saw Baker-Mazara get lifted into Division I this offseason, but he also helped Kasean Pryor get to South Florida and Marcus Niblack get to Jacksonville. Taryn Todd, who averaged nearly 10 points per game last season, is looking to move up, too.

Even still, DeMeo admitted he "probably should’ve got him (Baker-Mazara) the ball more."

Baker-Mazara was brought in by DeMeo following one season at San Diego State in 2021-22. The wing was forced to leave the Aztecs after he "failed to live up to his academic responsibilities," according to a statement from SDSU coach Brian Dutcher given to the San Diego Union-Tribune in June 2022.

But now back on track, DeMeo has little doubt the star that helped lead his team to the NJCAA title game last season will find success in his return to high-major basketball.

“Coach Pearl and the staff do an unbelievable job of putting guys in positions to be successful," DeMeo said. "I think he’s going to have a chance to be a key player for them, for sure. I always like to look at the best-case and worst-case scenarios, and I think the sky's the limit for Chad because when you can score like he does, there’s not a question in my mind he’s going to be a key piece of that program.”

Thanks for posting. This addresses my main question of why wouldn’t Baker-Mazara be averaging 20+pts/gm at the JUCO level if he was that efficient. His coach wanted balance and no superstar ball. Coach even said he probably should have run more stuff for CBM.

G-League Elite Camp: Day 1 Top Performers

    Jamie Shawabout 3 hours

Chicago, Illinois – The G-League is in Chicago hosting its G-League Elite Camp, an invite-only combine for players trying to make it to the NBA. Last year seven players who participated in the G-League Elite Camp were invited to the NBA Draft Combine. While ultimately, that is the goal of participating in this event, it can also serve as a proving ground to put your name on radars for next year’s draft.

Forty-four players were invited this year and split between four teams. Throughout the camp, players will go through interviews, athletic testing, and measurements. The games are broadcast on Youtube on the G-League channel, which is how I viewed the games.

The G-League Elite Camp is a two-day event, Saturday and Sunday, that leads right into the Monday start of the NBA Draft Combine. As it was mentioned previously, seven players were invited last year from this camp. The previous year, ten players were invited. The invites come from NBA personnel who want to see more.

Day one of the G-League Elite Camp took place on Saturday. The top performers are not necessarily the players who will get NBA Draft Combine invites or even get drafted; they are simply the players who performed the best on the day. With that said, On3 took in the live stream to talk top performers.

Full G-League Elite Camp Roster of Players

On3 MVP: PF Johni Broome, Auburn

Johni Broome led all scorers on day one of the G-League Elite Camp with 23 points. The lefty was a force on the block and from ten feet and in. He not only showed touch, but he was able to absorb contact around the basket and finish. He also showed range with the pick-and-pop jump shot, leading to believe that could consistently be a part of his game.

Broome finished with only 4 rebounds in this game; you would like to see him get better positioning there. While he is not an explosive leaper, he uses his length and timing well to affect plays around the rim. Broome’s offensive showing certainly opened eyes, with 23 points on 8-of-11 from the field. He seemed unaffected by any defense he saw from the opposition.

Tyrin Lawrence (Vanderbilt) – Tyrin Lawrence started strong in his game. He is an athletic guard who flourished when the game was fast and he was in transition. Lawrence showed instincts toward the rim and a capability to finish through contact. He showed toughness, and he showed he can create some offense. When he was on the floor, you heard his name. He is in the transfer portal in the event he comes back to college. Eyes were opened with this performance, but will it be enough to earn the NBA Combine invite? He had 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Man, if Broome comes back and we land Lawrence then our team is looking strong for ‘23-‘24 and Bruce looks like a genius. If they both go pro and we’re left empty-handed then look out below, not sure where the floor is.

  5. I sure hope Holloway can shoot. We need it. Every year people claim that the next incoming recruit or transfer is a great shooter and oftentimes that’s just not true. We’ll have to wait and see when he shows up. It’s really disappointing that among our 4 smallest players none of them are shooting a decent percentage from 3. I would think the smaller you are the better shooter you better be.

    From 3pt:

    Wen - 28% (career low)

    KD - 27% (career low)

    Zep - 30% (career low)

    Tre - 26%

Bryan Harsin's offense (his full iteration) is more complex than most at this level. Geriner would need to be either very very good, or things would need to go very wrong in order for him to be the starter as a true freshman. That isn't going to be Harsin's plan for him, hence why we're expecting to take a transfer QB.

Hank Bachmeier started as a true freshman for Harsin at Boise State in 2019 so it’s not unprecedented. Though I agree I’m sure that’s not the plan for Geriner.

  7. First I’ve heard of us recruiting Dallas Walker. DT is the most important position in this recruiting class IMO. Does this new development mean anything for the recruitment of Omari Thomas, McKinnley Jackson, or Josiah Hayes? Who is top priority out of this group?

Same high school ole Ryan Smith was from. Cordova has had great athletes for years. Parrish high school closed down a few years ago & Cordova gained a lot of athletes from that. It's nice to see a guy from my home area make it to this level.

Yeah, Ryan Smith was a solid player. He was good depth and had a couple of big moments for the defense/special teams.  Would be nice to see this Cordova product achieve as much or more as Smith.

    Welcome to the family, Kolbi!

It's time to start listing in the O stats dropped balls and Int's.

Should be some acknowledgment when it is not the QB's fault for an incompletion/ INT.

I think drops are worthwhile to keep up with.  Miss St had a lot of drops that helped us out a bit in the first half.
