  2. Memphis football starting left tackle Makylan Pounders enters the transfer portal Jonah Dylan Memphis Commercial Appeal Memphis football starting left tackle Makylan Pounders has entered the transfer portal. In an Instagram story, Pounders had a a blue heart emoji in front of a post from 247Sports that said he'd entered the portal. Pounders also responded to the 247 Tweet with a phone emoji on X, formerly Twitter. Pounders, a redshirt sophomore, was the Tigers' left tackle for most of the season. He entered 2022 as a starter as well but was injured in the opener against Mississippi State and played sparingly after that. Memphis will have work to do to rebuild the offensive line in the portal. Davion Carter, who started all 12 games at right guard, announced last week that he was entering the portal. Terrance McClain, who filled in at right tackle when there were injuries, announced he is heading to the NFL Draft. Center Jacob Likes could come back for his final year of eligibility. A 6-5, 290-pound tackle from Byhalia, Mississippi, Pounders committed to Memphis over offers from several Power Five schools.
  3. Report: Manny Diaz hired as next Duke football head coach Manny Diaz will take over the Duke football program following the Birmingham Bowl. By Rachael Kaplan and Caleb Dudley December 7, 2023 | 6:31pm CST It is time for a new era in Durham. Duke hired former Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz as its new head football coach Thursday evening, first reported from Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger on X. The move comes just 10 days after former head coach Mike Elko announced his departure for Texas A&M’s head coaching position. Diaz comes to Duke after two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Penn State. He helped turn the Nittany Lions into one of the best units in the country during his time in State College, Pa., ranking first in the nation in total defense in 2023 with just 223.2 yards allowed per game — the fewest in FBS since 2011. The 49-year-old has called the defensive plays all over the country throughout his career, including spells at Miami and Texas, an asset that will help his ability to recruit nationally. The Miami native brings a wealth of ACC experience to Durham, beginning from his time as a member of the defensive staff at N.C. State from 2000-05. Diaz made his return to the conference in 2016 when he took the defensive coordinator position at Miami, where he molded the Hurricanes into an elite defensive unit that ranked fourth in total defense during his last year as coordinator in 2018. He is also responsible for creating the famous “Turnover Chain,” which turned his defense into a social media phenomenon as much as it was an on-field one. Diaz also brings head coaching experience, as he took over in Coral Gables, Fla., after the retirement of Mark Richt in 2018. In his three years heading up Miami, Diaz was 21-15, going to three straight bowls before being let go in 2021. Diaz will be the Blue Devils’ third head coach in three years. David Cutcliffe parted ways with the program in 2021 after a storied 14-year tenure and disappointing ending. Elko was named his successor just 12 days later and spearheaded a rapid — and dramatic — turnaround of the program. After earning just one conference win in Cutcliffe’s final two years, Duke took down five ACC opponents in Elko’s first season en route to a 9-4 final record and Military Bowl victory. The Blue Devils continued to compete throughout the 2023 season, beating then-No. 9 Clemson for the team’s first top-10 win since 1989. Duke rose to No. 16 in the AP Poll at its highest before falling to then-No. 4 Florida State. The Blue Devils closed out the regular season 7-5, going 4-4 in the ACC. They will play Troy in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 23. The day following the conclusion of the 2023 regular season, the news broke that Elko was taking the Texas A&M position, kicking off King’s “nationwide search.” Associate head coach Trooper Taylor was named the interim in the meantime. While roster details for next year are indeed murky, numerous Blue Devils have already entered the transfer portal, including junior quarterback Riley Leonard. The Chronicle is tracking every entrance and departure for the program.

By: Mike Dyer Posted at 2:29 PM, Oct 16, 2023 and last updated 4:58 PM, Oct 18, 2023 PARK HILLS, Ky. — At 6 feet 5 and 235 pounds, Covington Catholic senior Willie Rodriguez is difficult to miss on the football field. The senior tight end/linebacker is one of Kentucky's top high school football players on one of the state's top teams (8-0) this season. He has a team-leading seven touchdown receptions. Recent Stories from wcpo.com "He brings a big impact to our team on the field," CovCath coach Eddie Eviston said. "And I think sometimes that's obvious. But, even off the field - his leadership qualities. He's a guy that doesn't say much but when he does something people are listening. That goes a long way." Rodriguez, 18, has a football skill set that speaks volumes. He is verbally committed to the University of Kentucky with a dream of playing in the NFL one day. He is rated Kentucky's No. 7 best high school player overall in the 247 Sports Composite for the 2024 class. Rodriguez enjoys the spotlight. Yet, he is also has a mature perspective on life. "My family inspires me to play with that chip on your shoulder," Rodriguez said. "Just play as hard as I can everyday." That relentless effort is fueled every Friday night in part by his younger sister, Gabby Rodriguez. Gabby, 16, has Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder which affects her cognitive level; she is nonverbal and unable to communicate consistently. Gabby Rodriguez needs assistance in all aspects of her day from the moment she wakes up each morning. "I always say that Gabby teaches us things - something that can't be taught in life," said Jody Rodriguez, who is the siblings' mother. "She truly has been a blessing to us and we try to focus on the positive of what she can do versus what she can't do." Willie Rodriguez focuses on his sister's well-being at their Taylor Mill home. That includes helping Gabby at meal times, with walks outside or preparing for bedtime at night. Willie, one of eight members of the family, carries those experiences with him onto the football field. "Seeing that she can't do a lot of things that other kids can, I think (I'm) fighting on the field - that motivation that obviously she can't do it," Willie Rodriguez said. "As someone who can do it, again it puts a different perspective on what you do." It's why Rodriguez understands his gifts as a student-athlete are blessings. "We rely on our faith a lot," Jody Rodriguez said. "We go to church. We pray as a family. I think that is very important in any obstacles in life to have that faith to help get you through for sure and find that strength." Provided Covington Catholic senior tight end/linebacker Willie Rodriguez (left) said his family inspires him as a student-athlete. Willie Rodriguez is often the first to volunteer for a project or task within the team. He is motivated to be kind to others in school. "He will be the first to admit want to do something bigger and better," Eviston said. Willie Rodriguez also understands he has a loving family at his games on Friday night. That includes his sister, Gabby, whose joy warms the hearts of those around her. "She will look at Willie and just smile if he's in his uniform," Jody Rodriguez said. "Or she gets excited if we walk into the stadium. Sometimes you will definitely hear her scream in the stands and get excited."
