  1. I wish there was a way to do a poll on here, but I am curious how you guys would rank the following potential portal targets that I've seen listed here. 247 has them listed at different positions, but they can all shoot and play the wing.

I'd probably rank them as Mosley, Mayer, Green.

With Mosley getting the nod because he could play both the 2 & 3 where we would need more help if Flanigan doesn't return to peak form. Mayer would be a close 2nd due to his size, shooting & most importantly his D, but I think he'd take some minutes from Jaylin or potentially Cardwell if Traore played more 5. Green would obviously be a sharpshooter at the 2/wing, but he seems less athletic / D oriented from what I've seen.

This video should be pinned on this thread.

I'm super excited about Traore and Broome, but they obviously have huge shoes to fill (pun intended). I feel like Westry has the chance to elevate our team in a similar way as Okoro, but in more of a Samir or Canty style. I'm not sure we've had anyone like Chance since......hmmm...I'm struggling to think of someone.

Kinda hard to improve on #11 & #4 in the nation on D at his position the past 2 years.

Unless you have a Kessler or Broome playing behind you. :)

No, that's true. I didn't realize that he was that highly ranked. I am curious how much of that was him and how much of that was Baylor's system. So then I am not sure what he can to raise his draft stock other than shoot lights out from 3 plus better than average typical development at his stage.

P.S. Where do you get your D rating stats?

P.P.S. How do I get the option to edit posts? And to be a verified member? There is probably some FAQ that I haven't found yet.

Call me crazy, but going after and possibly getting Mayer excites me as much as Phillips. There was alot of potential with Phillips and alot of unknowns. I see Mayer as someone that can address some of the glaring issues we had last year. Is his defense any good?

Yeah, the scouts were saying that Phillips has a very high ceiling, but still needs quite a bit of development to reach that potential (projected more as a 2 and done than a 1 and done). So Mayer would likely lead to more wins right away, but it's likely Mayer would be a 1 and done.

Any reason we aren’t recruiting Isiaih Mosley?

@CameronCrazyNobody has said we haven't been as far as I know. He's apparently a heavy Kansas lean though.

I think Isiaih Mosley could be the best fit out there. He is a deadly 3 pt shooter, can create his own shot, and has the height to play the 2 or the 3. Just not sure about his D. But that may be the missing piece to improve his draft stock, so you'd think AU would be attractive from that point of view.

The scouts seem to think Kansas has the inside track since he played with 3 of their players before college and he has a CB on 247 to Miss. State. But I wouldn't be surprised if he gets drafted given his shooting ability.

    Per Jamie Shaw of On3...

Kid is a baller when healthy and the Jungle would love him. Had some injury issues last year.

    @Rednilla@HAPvsOA

If he's OK with not playing 30+ minutes a game, I think he'd be a great fit after watching more video of him. He could help space the floor for KD, Green, Broome, and Traore. He also seems to make hustle plays and do some of the little things needed to win. Perhaps, Pearl's system could improve his D and draft stock and that would be the main attraction.

I've heard the TarHeels really want him as well to replace Manek in the stretch 4 type role, so we'll see what happens.

  7. 28 minutes ago, ellitor said:

    Looks like he's more of a 2G. That's where On3 lists him.

I see. 247 had him listed as the No. 4 PG with 100% CB to Iowa State.

But 9/15 from 3 in the NIT, 18.8 ppg for the year, and 2.5 apg, makes him sound more like a sharp-shooting SG. If he can play D, then it would be a good fit. But I am guessing he may want a spot with more playing time

Hate to see him in conference. We’ll just have to kick their ass again. But I don’t begrudge the kid or UT for maximizing his dollars. It’s allowed under the current rules.

I’ll be interested to see if we burn that scholarship or pivot to someone like AJ Green to get another shooter.

AJ Green as in the point guard from UNI?

I still think we need a 2/3 that can hit 3's. Perhaps a Matthew Mayer if he can play the 3, a Pete Nance from Northwestern that is 6'10', has 1 year left and made 45% of his 3's last year, or maybe a Malachi Smith (from Chattanooga).

Also, players like Josh Minott, Patrick Baldwin Jr or Keion Brooks would likely be too good to pass up if they don't stay in the draft, but only Baldwin seems like a great outside shooter and he'd likely be a 1st rounder, so not sure he'll come back to college.

If development matters, then it's Auburn or the G-League.  If it's money and development (without having to waste time going to class), then maybe the G-League over Auburn.  If it's just money, then I guess he'll go with UT.

Yep, you were right. It sounds like it was just money. When asked why he chose the Vols....

"Just how they handle their business on the basketball side," he said of what stood out on his official visit....."

  10. 1 minute ago, TitanTiger said:

If money is the tipping point for this kid, I can honestly say I don't want him.  I'm not anti-NIL, but if it's all about money for you, just go to the G-league.

Well he did commit to Will Wade the 1st time around, so I am not surprised that money is a factor.

Second, from what Hoke and others are saying, we don't have the highest offer, so if he picks AU then it will be about good money now and the best opportunity for later. And if Bruce wants him, then I'll be super excited to have him on board, because I think he's a great fit.

Lastly, I don't blame him. Some of the scouts on 247 suggest that he has a top 10 ceiling, but that he still needs a lot of development, or in other words, he's not a lock to be a 1 and done type prospect like Jabari. Given that he's the last 5 star available and seems to be a better shooter with a higher upside than most SFs left in the portal, he has a lot of leverage. I'm guessing a lot of people would wait it out and see if they can get as much as possible from their 1st choice. And if their 1st choice isn't competitive, it would be hard to turn away a higher offer from a strong 2nd or 3rd choice, especially if you don't plan to stick around for more than 2 years.

  11. A blurb today on 247 on Julian Phillips:

    Quote

"While most credible evaluators agree that Julian Phillips is one of the top prospects in the class, within the range, it is appropriate that there is a fairly diverse set of opinions. It all depends on your criteria, because his potential still exceeds his production. However, that potential is vast. He has positional size, skill, athleticism, and extreme fluidity. He shoots a soft ball and has all the physical tools necessary to be a competent defender. But, he’s not close to a finished product yet. There are still too many games that end without him making his mark in a manner consistent with his abilities.

I consider Phillips to be one of the best long-term prospects in the class, and on that criterion, he’s a top-10 guy in my opinion. However, on production to date, he’s not. When it comes to forecasting his immediate impact on the college level, that remains to be seen. I believe he’ll require some patience relative to a five-star prospect, but in the long-run, when we look back on this class, he could end up being one of the best."

Not sure about that. I love Flan but we can't assume he will get back to 2020 form minus the TOs. We still need to upgrade the SF/Wing if not for depth purposes alone & there are still good options available who may withdraw from the draft when all is said & done. I'm particularly interested in Matthew Mayer from Baylor.

    https://www.on3.com/transfer-portal/top/basketball/2022/?position=sf

It's interesting that they list Mayer as a SF. I thought he played more like a  stretch 4, kind of like Manek at UNC. While that makes Mayer a very attractive transfer, it seems like he would potentially overlap in skill set with Jaylin and create even more of a logjam at the 4, but perhaps I am wrong. I've only seen Mayer play once.

I'm also intrigued by Keion Brooks form Kentucky and am surprised that he is not ranked higher. But his 3 pt shooting numbers look low, so he's probably not the right fit for what we need at the 3. But he had an amazing game when UK routed Kansas earlier in the year and obviously has talent.

@HAPvsOA Can any of them play the wing/3 position? Looks like they are all listed as Guards which we have plenty of at this point. AD is too short for the position & we already have some shorter 2Gs so no fit there. TA is likely following his HC to Miss St.

Not sure. Mosley seems like the most likely candidate of that list due to his size and could probably play the 2 & 3. But after looking at his stats, I see why he may be a NBA draft pick. Obviously Phillips would be ideal at the 3, but I also think that Westry could play the 3 at times based on his skill set, so a person that could play both the 2 and 3 even if they were a more natural 2 may be a good fit if we don't get Phillips IMO.

We've had great success when we get the No.1 rated recruit in GA, so I'm putting Isaiah Collier on the top of the list to replace Zep after he graduates. Ja'Kobe Walter (same school as Phillips) and Justin Edwards also look the part. And it sounds like Wesley Yates is high on our board, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's a bit underrated.

Latest buzz: After spending the last couple of season lighting up the Missouri Valley, shooting guard Isiaih Mosley is another who has also entered the NBA Draft. Because of his ability to connect from deep and his penchant for making tough, contested shots he just may have an NBA future. However, there are questions on that level about the competition Mosley’s gotten his numbers against and his overall athleticism. He could erase many doubts with a return to school.

You have to keep an eye on Kansas here. The Jayhawks have had a lot of success with players from Mosley’s summer program MoKan Elite and just won a National Championship with three of the program’s players – Christian Braun, Dajuan Harris and Ochai Agbaji – in their starting lineup and Mosley played in high school with Harris. That doesn’t mean the Jayhawks are a lock though and others like Duke, Kansas State, Louisville, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Texas are all looking to get involved.

    7 way-too-early predictions for Auburn’s offense in 2022

    Dave Hooker
    5-6 minutes

Auburn’s offense looked vastly different last year compared to the season before. The vast, sweeping change should be more like ebbs and flows this season. Maybe.

Bryan Harsin enters Year 2 without the challenge of installing a new offense. His multiple-tight end sets are well in place. However, Harsin does have some similar hurdles to overcome this season. He has to continue to develop his offense under a new quarterback — again — and continue to win his team over, which looked as if it had jumped ship just a few months ago.

The agonizing Bo Nix era is finally over. His exit was part of one whopper of an offseason in which multiple players transferred, both coordinators had to be replaced and Auburn’s athletic department investigated the program. Are things settled now? We’ll see.

So what can Auburn fans expect from Auburn’s offense in 2022? Here’s a glimpse:

Zach Calzada will start the season at quarterback

That does not mean that Calzada will end the season at quarterback. Let’s take things one step at a time. When it comes to Auburn’s offense, it’s important to slow down and consider what could unfold. We’ll get to that below. For now, let’s look at that season-opener against Mercer on Sept. 3. Most around Auburn’s program believe Calzada will be the Tigers’ starter despite missing spring practice with an injury. Calzada has plenty of experience in the SEC. He gained that last season with Texas A&M before transferring. Despite the change in scenery, a new offense and missing offseason practice time, Calzada will nab the starting position — for now.

Calzada will not start every game this season

The above statement has nothing to do with injuries. Auburn is unique in its quarterback room. The two thought to be closest in the quarterback competition to Calzada both have intriguing back stories. TJ Finley played last season in relief of Nix during a comeback win against Georgia State and when Nix was injured later in the season. Therefore, everyone knows that Finley can at least play in the SEC. Robby Ashford transferred from Oregon with the intent of playing and performed well during spring practice. There isn’t much room for Calzada to slip if he is indeed named the starter during preseason camp.

The Tigers will rely on the running game even more

The Tigers were a bit too pass-happy last season. Auburn threw for just over 3,100 yards last season and ran for just 2,096. That simply won’t do for Harsin. It would be a surprise if the Tigers didn’t run for more than 2,500 yards this season given their strengths and weaknesses. If Auburn isn’t a better running team than last season, then running back Tank Bigsby has not been used enough. That leads us to …

Bigsby will run for 1,500 yards

Bigsby is one of the most proven running backs in the SEC entering 2022. He ran for 834 yards in a COVID-shortened freshmen season. Then he added 1,099 yards rushing last season — and many Auburn fans thought he still wasn’t used enough. He considered transferring, but Auburn coaches convinced him that the offense will run through him in 2022. That’s welcome news.

Bigsby will turn pro after the 2022 season

There is more incentive for players to stay in school with NIL money being doled out at most every opportunity. However, Bigsby is ready to make his run into the NFL. The junior will have nothing to prove after this season and plays a position in which time is not on his side. Bigsby just has to stay healthy. If not…

Jarquez Hunter will assume more of a role

This will be the case regardless of how Bigsby performs. Hunter’s explosiveness is in dire need this season. Hunter can change a game in just a few seconds. Auburn’s plodding offense doesn’t showcase that elsewhere.

Consider this: He averaged 6.7 yards per carry last season en route to 593 yards. In 89 attempts, he had 7 rushes of 20+ yards and 3 covering 30 or more yards. In 223 carries, Bigsby had 10 rushes of 20+ yards and 4 of 30 or more.

Hunter will certainly make some highlight plays this season. He’d better. If not, Auburn will be in trouble.

Auburn will be looking for a new offensive coordinator after this season

Former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn was criticized for not having a more clearcut hierarchy of decision-makers. Auburn replaced him with Harsin, who seems to be repeating that pattern. Take it from the School of Malzahn. When things aren’t going well, make a vast, sweeping change on offense.

Harsin promoted wide receivers coach Eric Kiesau to offensive coordinator after Austin Davis backed out, but if Auburn struggles, expect another change after the season. How vast? Let’s see how the season unfold.

I think positive predictions are still pending on who we get in the portal in terms of WRs and OL. Obviously having a couple more WRs that are threats in addition to our TEs would hopefully open things up a bit for the run game even if there are not upgrades on the OL.

    1. Get a shooter or two in the portal.

    2. PF to pair with Jaylin.

    3. Portal big that can start.

    4. An offseason spent on overhauling the offense to highlight our guard skills.

It's interesting to look back at this after landing Traore and Broome. I didn't know either of those names at the end of the tourney but am stoked about both. So check on numbers 2 & 3. I do think that 1) Jaylin and Green will shoot much better this year, 2) Westry will be a better shooter than Cambridge, and 3) am curious to see how Traore shoots from 3.

Hopefully we get Phillips and our spacing and shooting improves via number 4. If we don't get Phillips, then hopefully we can find another wing that is a knock down shooter. But we'll see what Bruce can do.

You weren't watching the range from which Wendell Green was shooting 3s, were you? Little better shot selection skills and he's a 40% shooter. Zep will never be elite as a shooter, but he's solid at least, and he's elite defensively.

So was Isaac Okoro, and he was ranked #36 in the country out of high school by 247. Westry is #33.

This is basketball, and it's not as difficult to change a team's dynamics even as a freshman.

Good points. I think both Wendell & Zep can be 35+% shooters and I'm hoping Chance is at that level. I get the impression that he is more of a distributor and shooter than Okoro was. 247 compares him to Rodney Hood which would be closer to a scoring point guard or shooting guard. https://247sports.com/player/chance-westry-46093860/

KD is always going to be streaky, but hopefully, he can be better than last year. As long as people have to guard him beyond the 3 pt line, he'll should continue to improve overall. His shooting dropped so significantly at one point last year that it makes me think it was partially due to injury.

  20. 1 hour ago, ellitor said:

Disagree with the Okoro-lite part since he was averaging nearly 3.3 TOs a game.

Per Hoke that wasn't his issue. Supposedly had lost his offensive rhythm & identity due to our offense running through Bari Kess & other players & lost overall confidence due to that.

Agree to disagree on the Okoro-lite. I'm not sure how many TOs Okoro had, but I don't think Flanigan would have been getting some fringe 2nd round draft buzz if he didn't show some skill and grit in other areas (e.g., defense & rebounding), although I agree that 3.3 TOs is bad. Flan was also playing point or point forward at times, which can increase TOs and obviously he didn't look anything like an Okoro-lite last year and still had the TOs which is worrisome.

And thanks for the intel from Hoke. If it's mainly about identity & rhythm, then perhaps starting out on the bench and playing with the 2nd group will help him find his rhythm & confidence again with less pressure to live up to that past fringe draft hype.

    Flanigan

Can't believe a number of y'all want him there given how much he has struggled with handling the ball & TOs the past 2 years.

In all fairness, Flanigan was the best player on the team for multiple games a couple years ago, played multiple different positions, impacted the game even when he wasn't scoring, and had some draft buzz. He seemed like an Okoro-lite at that point.

It's hard to know how much of success and subsequent drop-off was due to having a lot of usage on a bad team vs. loss of strength, confidence & mobility due to the injury. It also could have been partially due to team makeup & spacing. Sharife, Thor, and our 3 pt. specialists obviously gave him different spacing and opportunities than KD, Jabari & Kessler.

To me, he looked smaller (strength wise), moved slower, and seemed less confident last year. But I still hold out hope that he'll be an impact player / fringe NBA draft pick if he can get back to that Okoro-lite level of play. I know he still had issues with turnovers and I thought 2 years ago that it had to do with him trying to play point before Sharife arrived, but perhaps you're right on that concern. And if so he needs to clean that up if he wants minutes IMO.

I wouldn't be shocked if this was the lineup coming into whatever the bball equivalent of fall camp is, but I'd have to think by game 1, one of Westry or Traore break through.

One thing to consider is the shooting with the forward/big spot. Most people's top 2 at the 5 spot is gonna be non-shooters that are purely rollers. Depending on how Jaylin and Traore are looking from outside, that could influence who starts at the 4, to give some balance.

Agreed. That's why I was assuming it may be Jaylin starting based on how he was shooting in the NCAA tourney.  If Traore is the better shooter, then I don't see how you can have him on the bench very long even if he plays some time at the 5 along side Jaylin.

Word from Hoke is Zep is likely moving to the 2 because of his quality shooting & not providing much punch at the point. Chance is expected to get more PT at the point than Tre , with Tre being a real redshirt possibility.

Interesting. I thought Zep was a really steady 1 with so few turnovers, but he also didn't seem to be a Chris Paul type with lots of assists. And his 3 pt shooting plus his defense against the other team's 2 would be valuable. I'm not sure how much it matters who starts, but I'd probably give KD the starting nod over Zep, unless Pearl wants KD's scoring/energy on the 2nd unit.

If Westry can also run an efficient point then that would be excellent. Can you imagine having an well run lineup with Westry, Flanigan, Phillips (fingers crossed), Traore & Jaylin on the floor at the same time? If only for 10 minutes per game, that could create a lot of matchup issues for certain opponents. Even if you insert 1 of Green, KD or Broom in there if we don't get Phillips, its still crazy length and athleticism on average. Pearl is going to have fun figuring out his lineups and subs with this team.

    2. Flanigan, KD

    3. Westry, Moore

    4. Traore, Jaylin

    5. Broom, Dylan

and one thing with mine is that it’s not taking staggering into account. Even if Moore was backup SF nominally, he’s almost never seeing the court with both Flanigan and very rarely, one of the smaller guards flexing in for minutes.  I see us having a 9 man rotation as of rn

I was thinking something similar with a few minor adjustments

    1. Zep, Green (basically how it was), Tre, Westry

    2. KD, Westry, Flanagan

    3. Flanagan, Moore/Westry with Westry having a good chance to start by the end of the season. Note: I am also curious if Moore will be much improved this season as well and move Westry more towards a 2.

    4. Jaylin, Traore, Moore with Traore having a good chance to start by the middle of the season.

    5. Broom, Dylan, Traore/Jaylin when small ball is preferred
