Based on the roster I wanted to do a quick look at each position and what we will need in this upcoming class. This will be brief but please discuss your thoughts below!
Quarterback (1): Every year you want to take a quarterback ideally. They don't always have to be All-SEC potential but that is the goal. Some targets Auburn has worked on this class:
- 5* Julian Lewis - USC Commit
- 4* Deuce Knight - Notre Dame Commit
- 4* Husan Longstreet - TAMU lean
- 4* KJ Lacey - Texas Commit
Running Back (2): We actually have a little bit of a need here with Jarquez and Battie both running out of eligibility. That is also assuming that Cobb and Alston both stay put. Here are some names to track:
- 4* Alvin Henderson (Auburn lean)
- NR Malakhi Lewis
- NR Greg Peacock
Wide Receiver (3-4): The staff did a great job bringing in a big 2024 class. They need to follow that effort up to build depth and prepare for the inevitable transfers. Here are some guys worth tracking:
- 5* Caleb Cunningham (Miss State lean)
- 4* Travis Smith (Georgia lean)
- 3* Daylyn Upshaw (Auburn lean)
- 3* Tristan Norman (Vandy lean)
- NR Branden Hoch
- 4* ATH CJ Nickson
Tight End (2): Finally some of our seniors have exhausted their eligibility here. We need a few quality options that could play early.
- 3* AJ Ia (Auburn lean)
- 3* Hollis Davidson (Auburn Commit)
- 3* Ryan Ghea (Auburn Commit)
Offensive Line (5-6): Big fan of getting one player at each position on the OL when possible. It is a position that ideally develops for a few years before taking the field. Here are some targets:
- 4* Broderick Shull (Auburn lean)
- 4* Juan Gaston (Georgia lean)
- 4* Tavaris Dice (Auburn Commit)
- 4* Carde Smith (Auburn lean)
- 3* Mal Waldrep (Clemson lean)
- 3* Tai Buster (Auburun Commit)
- 3* Spencer Dowland (Auburn Commit)
- 4* Kalen Edwards (Georgia lean)
- 3* Jacobe Ward (Auburn lean)
Defensive Line & Edge (3-5): We need to continue to restock the cupboard here. The interior needs more bodies and the edge position was solid last year but could use more true DEs.
- 4* Zion Grady (Alabama lean)
- 4* Jakaleb Faulk (Auburn commit)
- 4* C.J. May (Auburn lean)
- 3* Grayshaun Swain (Auburn lean)
- NR Anthony Kruah (Auburn lean)
- 4* Andrew Maddox (Ole Miss lean)
- 4* Antonio Coleman (Alabama Commit)
- 4* Kevin Wynn (Georgia lean)
- 4* Jourdin Crawford (Auburn Commit)
- 4* Malik Autry (Auburn Commit)
- NR Ryshawn Perry (Auburn lean)
Linebacker (2): I actually think we could get away with just two here. We did a good job last year which should allow us now to start just filling the need of 2 a year.
- 4* Jarcoby Hopson (Ole Miss lean)
- 4* Tyler Lockhart (Miss State lean)
- 3* Coleman Lewis (Auburn lean)
Defensive Backs (4): I could see another big class here. We have some guys graduating and a need for even more depth.
- 4* Devin Williams (Auburn Commit)
- 4* Mark Manfred
- 3* Shamar Arnoux (Tenn lead)
- NR Dante Core
- NR Zacharey Smith
- NR Thomas Young
- NR Antorie Hughley
- 4* Anquon Fegans (USC lean)
- 4* Kendarius Riddick (UCF Commit)
- 4* Eric Winters (Auburn lean)
- 4* Jaedon Harmon (Alabama lean)
- 3* Jaylen Mosley (Ole Miss lean)
- NR Jotavion Pierce
Just based off the commits and leans, it appears that our NIL $$$ is going towards the O & D lines. Which I am happy about. But I'm curious if our strategy is to go after multiple high 4* instead of putting all our eggs in a 5*, which I wonder if this is the best approach given how much our roster has improved.
Also, it sure feels like we are swinging and missing on our top QB, WR & RB targets, which of course will happen more frequently when you prioritize the top at each position, but here's hoping Longstreet proves me wrong. I still think Hugh has a chance even though all the predictions are pointing towards A&M.

We got a top OT target to commit and it's crickets!? 🦗🦗🦗 Dice, Carde, and Dowland already in the boat, plus at least one more OT (and likely 5*) projected and a puncher's chance on at least 2 other 5*'s. This is what we've been wanting for years.
But I get it. It just feels different now. Just saw this Duke's Scoop interview and when asked if he'd still take his official visits, I expected a yes for sure. But his answer was that his recruitment is "still 100% open." I think he ends up in Auburn and that's exactly what I'd say if I were him and wanted to maximize my NIL options.
But 100% open? It's a different era these days.

Per al.com today, they quote 4 folks at On3. 3 predict him to AU while the other predicts Penn State. No predictions for Miami (which means that's who he probably chooses)
He basically describes Penn St's backfield and current recruiting class when asked why he's committing to a school in this Duke Scoops interview on ON3. He added that AU wants the last official but he wants to see progress on the field. visit. https://cdn.jwplayer.com/previews/20kuu2HK

What kind of odds would you all put on us landing either J Lewis vs. H. Longstreet?

Hoping for some good news in this thread soon, riding a Nike Air commitment wave FTW.

Complete speculation on my part and possibly (probably?) way off base, but I wonder if this is the start of a transition to a model where access and info moves behind an OTV membership paywall.

How long has it been since we have pretty much zero info from scrimmages and practices. Yes, I know our insiders are doing the best to keep us informed. But fact is, I feel like I have never had LESS info regarding Spring Practice for years. Am I missing something?
Stealth Hugh - he's keeping all his aces up his sleeve this year. 😎

I believe Cam leaves as our greatest statistical WR.
Agreed......but that's a low bar for someone like him. How many 1000 yard (single season) receivers have we ever had?

Here is how I see it playing out:
PG - Tre Donaldson(6'3"), PG - Tahaad Pettiford(5'10")
SG - Denver Jones(6'4"), PG - Aden Holloway(6'1")
PF - Chaney Johnston(6'7"), OPEN
SF - Chad Baker-Mazra(6'7), SF - Jahki Howard(6'6")
C - Dylan Cardwell(6'11"), OPEN
PG : Auburn is set at this position. Donaldson, Holloway, and Pettiford can all play point. IMO, Pettiford will have to play point. Donaldson has cemented himself this year as the starter. Holloway could move out to SG. I don't see a way that Pearl carries 3 PGs into the season. There will not be enough minutes to satisfy them all.
SG : Denver Jones could be moved to PF if Pearl elects to go with a small lineup. I doubt he will though. Denver's offensive production fits better at SG. I think Holloway moves over to SG. to replace KD who is leaving.
PF : Chaney Johnson will need a back up. The portal will need to provide here.
SF : CBM should be a starter next year. I don't know how well Howard's production will translate to college but he seems to be talented. If CBM is relegated to 2nd team again, I will call the position a strength. Jaylin Williams leaving will hurt though.
C : Cardwell has been more productive this season. If he gets more minutes, I can see him being more productive but I don't see a 20 point plus player in him. I see a 15 point player. The portal will need to provide someone here. To compete for the job at minimum.
Portal: As mentioned, Auburn will need to find another center and power forward. I think they have to keep communication open with SGs as well. Just in case Donaldson or Holloway transfers.
Denver, CBM, and Dylan all have eligibility left?

KD with some killer D

now this is the AU team that we needed to show up!

It would still have been special if we had closed the fifth of the Freeze 5, but that said, Freeze surpassed expectations by far, so it's a huge step forward in the right direction.

There are not many Tony Barbee memes out there and I guess for good reason. But this one will suffice and gets straight to the point!
Anyone complaining about Bruce needs to go back and watch the talent and schemes on those Tony Barbee teams.

That's some stiff competition with Edey, Bacot, and Dickinson also at C.
Any chance we can pin or boost this vote? We all get 1 vote per day, but I didn't see it until now. Maybe change the title to "Vote Broome Daily for the Nation's Best Center Award"

The computers love AU, especially our defense and since we're still very high in Net rating, KenPom and ESPN BPI. I think the road losses (which included decent 2nd halves) and the 1st half at Ole Miss were valuable lessons for this team to hopefully become a force by tourney time. I just hope we don't peak too early.

It's good to see a new CB for Tavaris Dice from Langston Hughes. The ON3 guys also mentioned him as one of the most likely to be the next to commit. So hoping to continue building a strong OL class in 2025 this weekend.

Well, the offensive struggles the last few years are what ultimately caused A&M to fall short in the win column and got Jimbo fired (particularly since he's an offensive coach and until last year called his own plays).
The two years Durkin was there, A&M's offense was middling to bad:
2023: 50th in total offense (406.9 yds per game) and 25th in scoring (33.3 pts per game)
2022: 93rd in total offense (361.2 ypg) and 101st in scoring (22.8 ppg)But Durkin's defenses did pretty well and improved in total defense year over year:
2023: 19th in total defense (316.2 ypg) and 36th in scoring defense (22.1 ppg)
2022: 52nd in total defense (365.2 ypg) and 25th in scoring defense (21.2 ppg)There was drop off from when their DC Mike Elko left after the 2021 season to take the Duke HC job, but they also lost 5 defensive players to the portal and 2 more to the NFL Draft. And 2022 was a particularly abysmal year for them on offense as you can see above.
I am liking the food convo as much as the X's and O's tbh and will hit yall up for recs next time I visit home.
But getting back to Durkin as a DC, I am liking Titan's analysis of Durkin much better than Connor O'Gara's. Not familiar with that writer, but he's not high on Durkin as a DC based on this article.

Yeah and Liberty fans had warned us about Freeze penchant to lose games he shouldn’t , as well as , ole miss. Point being I like discussion about football but I also like to see what the stats say before I project that Durkin’s teams consistently give up big plays. I am not sure that holds true. I am more worried about the annual variability of his two seasons at Texas A&M which is a very small sample size . I am very impressed that in one year A&M went from last to first in the sec in run defense.
In all fairness, he had quite a few 5 star and high 4 star players in his front 7 at A&M. I'm not saying he isn't a good coach and we may get to that point soon the way the coaches are recruiting. But I will have low expectations this first year. Obviously Ron Roberts had his issues, but I thought he got quite a bit out of our D and had them playing over their talent level for at least part of the year.

Any UK players we want?

I think any of them as long as they fit the culture. Cal always brought in the talent and I'd like to see some of it thrive in Pearl's system.
