Auburn women’s basketball sophomore guard Sydney Shaw has entered the transfer portal, AL.com confirmed Wednesday.

The news was first reported by The Next Hoops’ Talia Goodman.

During her sophomore campaign in 2023-24, Shaw averaged 6.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Shaw appeared in all 32 of Auburn’s games this past season and started in 18 of them, all while averaging 21.5 minutes per game.

Rated a 4-star prospect by ESPN in 2022, Shaw, a Miami native, was also courted by the likes of Indiana and St. Johns during her recruitment.

Shaw’s decision to test the transfer waters comes after she and the Auburn made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2019. The Tigers went on to be eliminated from the tournament after a loss to Arizona during the play-in round.

With Shaw looking to possibly move on and fellow Auburn guards Honesty Scott-Grayson and JaMya Mingo-Young out of eligibility, head coach Johnnie Harris and the Tigers will be tasked with replacing their three most productive guards from the 2023-24 season.

Fortunately for Auburn, the Tigers recently signed a pair of in-state guards in Auburn High’s Syriah Daniels and Hewitt-Trussville’s Jordan Hunter. While Hunter ranks as the No. 1 prospect out of the state of Alabama by Hoopseen.com, Daniels, an Auburn legacy signee, helped Auburn High to a 26-5 record this past season while averaging 21 points per game.

About par for the course with Johnnie’s off-season roster retention record at AU. I thought Shaw was going to be a central piece to next year’s roster. The light bulb kinda came on for her in the Arky SECT win. Don’t know if the light bulb went off again in the next two dismal games lol? Hope the 2 incoming frosh guards have game that can immediately impact the W-L line.

We need some portal commits to make up for all these losses. Really hoping this wasn’t just a fluke year. Next year’s roster looks rough and needs quite a bit of help.

Is she looking for NIL money or just looking?  I don't know.  I do know that some sanity needs to be restored to college athletics.  If not, the future is not a bright one.
