Political Futures...

Eminent Democrat fundraiser Bill Clinton rode his white horse to Sen. Joe Lieberman's rescue this week, appearing at a well attended rally on the embattled incumbent's behalf. Lieberman is facing an increasingly tough challenge by lefty businessman Ned Lamont, who is using Lieberman's support for the war against Jihadistan as a springboard for his attempt to unseat the three-term Connecticut senator in the 8 August primary. Clinton and Lieberman have been close politically for many years, despite the senator's admonishment of the disgraced former president during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. The erstwhile prevaricator in chief is among a handful of Democrats who have come to Lieberman's support, but many others have either stood silent or voiced opposition based solely on Joltin' Joe's support of President Bush's decision to depose Saddam Hussein.

This rabid opposition to Lieberman is as sure a sign as any that the Left has lost its will, if it ever had any, to wage war against Jihadistan. Lieberman's domestic record is clearly liberal, and he has fought the administration on tax cuts and other conservative issues. The frenzy that has been whipped up by the liberal bloggers could end up costing Democrats one of their strongest elected officials just so they can prove a point—but, hey, it's their party. They can cry if they want to.

Elsewhere on the campaign trail, Hillary Clinton, the highest-funded 2008 presidential candidate, is already assembling her team for the big race, including some 50 staffers, 20 consultants, and top-notch Washington hairstylist Isabelle Goetz. Goetz, apparently an important part of Team Hillary, has been paid $3,000 in recent months to primp Clinton's hairdo. She has also been paid hundreds of dollars in travel expenses. So, don't think for a moment that Clinton is merely concerned about senatorial re-election bid this fall. She's got everything worked out for '08, right down to her hair—and that will take more than $3,000 to fix.

This week's "Alpha Jackass" award:

"The President made a big deal about bringing the Iraqi prime minister to address Congress. The Iraqi prime minister is an anti-Semite. We don't need to spend $200, $300, $500 billion bringing democracy to Iraq to turn it over to people who believe Israel doesn't have a right to defend itself." — Demo National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, insulting a domestically constrained ally for cheap political gain

This week's "Braying Jackass" award:

"If I was president, this [war in Lebanon] wouldn't have happened... The president has been so absent on diplomacy when it comes to issues affecting the Middle East. We're going to have a lot of ground to make up because of it... This is about American security and Bush has failed. He has made it so much worse because of his lack of reality in going into Iraq." — John Kerry pontificating from a bar in Detroit
