Gamecock shock? Spurrier eyes upset of Auburn

September 27, 2006

With precious little tradition and history on its side, South Carolina has never beaten a team ranked as high as No. 2 Auburn.

The Gamecocks will get that opportunity when the teams meet Thursday. Little wonder South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier drooled in anticipation when informed by the media this week that beating Auburn would be the greatest upset in school history.

“We’ve got a shot at history?” he said. “Yeah, that’s fun. That’s fun. This could be the highest-ranked team. OK, I’ll tell our guys that.”

A No. 2-ranked team has not lost to an unranked opponent since 1999, when Minnesota defeated Penn State. In addition, South Carolina has dropped 19 consecutive games against top-five opponents dating back to 1981.

Spurrier, who is 11-11 against top-five teams, still believes the Gamecocks could shock the nation Thursday.

“If the ball bounces our way, it would be a big night for Carolina,” he said.

USC’s chance for an upset is slim. Auburn is 26-3 since the start of the 2004 season, which is third best in the NCAA. The Tigers’ defense figures to choke off any ideas South Carolina might have of winning. Let’s call it Auburn 21, South Carolina 9.

An interesting side note: Auburn’s Kenny Irons, considered by many to be the SEC’s top tailback, began his career at South Carolina but transferred after a mysterious benching in 2003 by former Gamecocks coach Lou Holtz.

Holtz will be part of ESPN’s broadcast crew to work Thursday’s game.

Rumor has it that the fans sitting a minimum of 15 rows below the press box will be required to wear ponchos. Sorry, no link.

Yeah that is what I have been hearing. The field crew are actually worried about the field conditions. Draining hasn't been too great in South Carolina.

Maybe they're hoping that him being biased would be so obvious he wouldn't do it?

Honestly I have no idea - logic is foreign to them
