StatTiger 3,188
During the 2001 season, Auburn upset No. 1 ranked Florida to register Coach Tommy Tuberville's first victory over a top ten ranked opponent. Over the next 64 games, Auburn would win 13 more games against a top ten ranked team, posting a 14-5 record during that six year period. Prior to the victory over No. 1 ranked Florida in 2001, the last Auburn victory against a top ten opponent was the 1997 Georgia game, when Auburn defeated No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs, 45-34. You would have to go back 166 games to total 14 victories over a top ten opponent, prior to the 1997 Georgia victory. This would take you back to the 1983 season, when Auburn defeated No. 7 Maryland, 35-23. From the 1983 Maryland game to the 1997 Georgia game, Auburn was 14-13-2 against top ten ranked opponents. Auburn was 0-9 against top ten ranked opponents between the 1997 Georgia game and the 2001 Florida game. Prior to defeating No. 7 Maryland in 1983, Auburn defeated No. 5 Florida (1983) the week before. Including the victory over Florida in 1983, you would have to go back another 287 games to compile 14 victories over a top ten opponent. This would take you back to the 1957 Tennessee game, when Auburn defeated No. 8 Tennessee, 7-0. From the 1957 Tennessee game to the 1983 Florida game, Auburn was 14-34-1 against top ten opponents. Just to recap.... It took Tommy Tuberville, 65 games from 2001 to 2006 to compile 14 victories over top ten opponents, posting a 14-5 record against top ten opponents. The next 14 victories over top ten opponents occured between 1983 and 1997 (167 games), when Auburn compiled a 14-13-2 record against top ten opponents. Prior to that run, it took the Auburn Tigers from 1957-1983 (288 games) to compile 14 victories over top ten opponents, posting a 14-34-1 record against top ten teams. Bottom line, Tommy Tuberville's recent success against top ten opponents is the best in school history and we should be very proud.
aucanucktiger 1,798
Great stuff. I wonder how many teams have a 14-5 record over that short a period of time w/out even be ALLOWED to play for a MNF...
AFTiger 282
The opportunity to play a no. 1 team is rare. Outside of the SEC the opportunity to play a top 10 team is rare.
aucat 69
I remembered our 1993 / 1994 team also defeated #1 U.F., unfortunately we were in prob. at that time.
sogaaufan 27
I've always said that a college coaches worst nightmare is to have to play a Tuberville coached team that is ranked below you. Put his back to the wall and Tubs will beat you EVERY time.
eagle76 1
How many of those games were against SEC competition. I bet most were. Doesn't this also show that the SEC is getting stronger and stronger each year.
