Explanation of SEC Television Contract

There has been a lot of discussion going on about next weekends games, and the networks/time-slots they could be in. I've seen conflicting stories of whether ESPN2 or LF get to pick the game first. Hopefully this link will help to clear up some of the confusion.

In 1996 the SEC launched a league-wide football partnership with CBS Sports

as its exclusive rights holder. The deal gives the national network “first choice”

to televise 12 weekly SEC regular-season contests through 2008 and the

championship game. Most SEC games on CBS will be on Saturday afternoons

in the 3:30 PM ET time slot.

As part of its package, CBS may annually televise two SEC home games

against non-conference opponents. In cases when an SEC team visits a nonconference

opponent, television rights are granted to the home team’s conference.

A school may appear a total of four times on CBS.

Once the network makes its primary weekly selections, the rest of the SEC schedule is

available for ESPN/ESPN2 or the SEC’s designated syndicator, Lincoln Financial Sports,

to choose from (see next page).

SEC Football Overview-

How Secondary Telecast options Fall:

1st: ESPN – Up to 12 regular-season games per year (SEC or

nonconference) – nine games on ESPN (5 must be Saturday

night prime time), the remainder may be on ESPN2.

2nd: Lincoln Financial Sports – Game of the Week for 13

consecutive weeks. Each school to appear at least once.

3rd: Pay-per-view – Available to cable subscribers via encrypted

or scrambled signals limited to home state of the two participating

schools unless ESPN Game Plan also agrees to

distribute nationally. The only manner in which the SEC

permits UF to televise a game statewide is if the game was

not selected by a network partner.

Here are the possible games this weekend...

Arkansas-Tennessee

South Carolina-Florida

Auburn-Georgia

LSU-Alabama

That is the order I think they will be chosen...but who knows.
