BamaGrad03 0
Alrighty...good music topic of the day. Immediate disqualification if you name any guitarist from any band that came on the scene in the last 5 years...that ESPECIALLY includes anybody from : The White Stripes, The Vines, The Hive...etc. You have to be able to play more than 3 chords to be included. And this is a lead guitarist list so no Paul Simon or Dave Matthews Here's my list (im sure some of you classic rock guys will hate my list) 1.) Stevie Ray Vaughn 2.) Eric Clapton 3.) Joe Satriani 4.) Jimi Hendrix 5.) Slash Honorable Mention: Tim Reynolds Jimmy Page David Gilmour (But what hurt Floyd..imo...is that they had the WORST drummer of any major rock band in the last 40 years) Alright guys, take a stab. BamaGrad03 0
ricky skaggs.i win. game over. end of discussion. ct While I will give you credit for coming up with possibly the best bluegrass guitarist ever...its really hard to compare his skill to that of the rest. I doubt he can pick up Lucille and jam like BB or Clapton...but I doubt likewise that either could stand in for skaggs...

AUloggerhead 2,252
Don't know if they belong in the top 5 or not but these two need to be mentioned: Eddie Van Halen Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple) When Deep Purple tried to reunite back in the early '90s, Blackmore quit the band over some dispute. The band replaced him with Satriani. Also, I found this: Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitar Players The top 5 look about right. Not sure I agree with anything beyond that. Keith Richard at #10, Kurt Cobain at #12??!! What a joke.

AUdaREALsecTigers 2
Can't believe no one's mentioned Jeff Beck. Eddie VH kicks a-- also (good call AUloggerhead!). Rolling Stone left Joe Satriani (sp?) off the list completely. Hard to believe...

One of the greatest ever at conveying his emotions and thoughts with a guitar. that's one of the sweetest things i've ever read on an internet chatboard. So I made you wanna puke. Sorry  . Thanks for the huge belly laugh though when you brought up ricky skaggs . Bluegrass . Oh I'm sure he can pick and grin with the very best of them . Oh well I guess someone has to listen to it. All great guitarists have their strong points and that was/is gilmour's. It is one of the bigger reasons they have sold millions and millions and.... of records to date and still counting everyday. I'm through my Pink Floyd phase but still like to hear some from time to time. Nobody plays like gilmour, nobody. There is a lot to be said for having your own style in the music industry. Most on this list have their own style to some degree. Then you have skaggs . Just another blugrass picker and grinner. Oh I'm sure he may pick a little faster or grin a little harder than the others. More power to him.
