Wright states he wasn't his spiritual mentor. But these distinctions may miss the point. Obama had a relationship with Wright. Wright is a respected theologian who was not seen as particularly controversial until recently. He has a few odd views. But has been seen as a highly respected member of the community for decades. Because of the relationship, Obama saw him as a complex person with both positive attributes and not so positive attributes. On the whole, he saw enough good to value the person, even when it first threatened to end his campaign. He never put Wright front and center and didn't seek his political endorsement. McCain, on the other hand, made a conscious choice to embrace Hagee publicly for political purposes. You're right, he doesn't give a damn about Hagee as a person. He sought him out for what he hoped would be political gain. A blatantly cynical effort to score points with a constituency he doesn't even really respect, but has come to believe he needs to court. You think Obama's relationship with the Rev. speaks worse of him than McCain's relationship with Hagee does of him. That's a matter of perspective.
