Chamberlain's error was in giving in to Hitler's demand to keep Czechoslovakia for some promise that he was done. "Peace in our time." The error was not in talking to Hitler in the first place. Talking may have ended up not changing anything, but when Chamberlain essentially went in and gave into Hitler's evil demand for the sake of avoiding war, that was appeasement. That was the problem.
