Grumps 3,705
Does anybody remember the last time Florida had a runningback that scared anybody? Late 80s, Emmitt Smith? The same back who went on to state regretting not going to AU at his NFL hall of fame induction? Emmitt was one of the most overrated college players EVER. He was at Florida for 3 years. Florida was 0-9 in those three years against florida's biggest rivals: Auburn, Georgia, and Florida State. Emmitt only rushed for 100 yards in ONE of those 9 games. That ONE was against Florida State. Against the big boys, Emmitt was average at best. So, let's see. The last time Florida had a running back that scared anybody?? That would be....... NEVER. Sorry, but Emmitt was not overrated and I'm convinced that if we'd have had a running back of his caliber on those '88 and '89 teams we might have won a national title. We made a couple of grinders like James Joseph and Stacy Danley into productive (but not gamebreaker) backs. We could have made Emmitt into a Heisman winner. Florida was a mess during his time there with NCAA sanctions swirling and a coach about to be run off and it was before Spurrier turned them into a monster. You can't lay Florida's record vs big opponents at Emmitt's feet. Emmitt Smith was an awesome player on a sucky team in college. He would have made AU much better. Saying he wasn't very good because he wasn't able to single-handedly beat the best teams he played is ridiculous.
