Auctoritas 2,828
Just got a job offer from the CDC to attach to Port Charlotte, FL's health department for 2 years. That's about an hour south of Sarasota and an hour north of Ft Myers. Anyone have any good info on the area?

That's about an hour south of Sarasota and an hour north of Ft Myers. Anyone have any good info on the area? Nice, what will they have you doing? No clue, to be honest! I applied to something called the Public Health Associates Program (PHAP), which is a fellowship program run via the CDC. 6000 applications got cut down to 230 or so spots this year. If you are accepted, they offer you a spot as a CDC adviser to a health department, a non-profit, an academic or research setting, or something. You do a year in one program area and then another year in a different area. Most likely I will be doing public health preparedness, immunizations, general epidemiology, maybe some chronic disease stuff. The spot is term-limited to 2 years, but it's phenomenal experience AND you get to work for the CDC. After the 2 years is up, you are eligible to apply for internal postings for CDC. I'm excited about it, except the Florida part. I like winters and mountains, and that state's got a serious dearth of both. Still, Port Charlotte is right on the Gulf, so I'm not gonna complain too much about it!

I put in a app recently for Health Communications Specialist with the CDC in Atlanta. It does outreach, marketing, and communication with other health organizations. Mikey 16,579
I have an old high school friend that lives in Port Charlotte. He likes it there. We've visited Fort Meyers a couple of times, which is right up the road and it's very nice. However, I've never spent any extended period of time there. I grew up in Miami, but if I had to move back to Florida I'd move to the Naples/Port Charlotte/ Fort Meyers area. It's pretty nice in those parts. AU_Tiger_88 417
I live in Bradenton and port Charo letter is a decent area. Good fishing. Weather isn't bad. If you like theater you have Sarasota. Airport is an hour in each direction. Beaches aren't bad. Kind of sleepy there but not bad for a couple of years
