Thorne has been given everything a QB could ask for to be successful. No excuses this year.

I keep seeing people say this but until I see a competent OL play to expectations, well..... Missouri. Maybe we were better at times last year but it still wasn't "good". Anybody that wants to argue that, I refer to exhibit A, Bo Nix.

Some things about DJD's defensive scheme

Switches up 3 and 4 man fronts.

Usually with 3 down he will walk up an OLB. Loves versatility in his OLB and move them all over

Uses his nickles to blitz quite a bit much like RR.

Seems to prefer man more than zone as a whole, but will mix up coverages pretty well and run some good combos

edit- not sure what he will do here as a lot likely depends on personnel

    That all sounds refreshing.

@bigbird is it true that Roberts was let go primarily because of his personality and fit within the culture Freeze is trying to establish at Auburn? It's impossible to tell what is true and what is message board gossip. But, accepting the message board narrative that Roberts was too hard-nosed with his players to be a good fit here, it seems to me that Durkin, if we accept the reporting about him, is a nonsensical hire.

Logically, at least one of the narratives - either that Robert's personality was toxic, or that Durkin's personality is toxic, must be a departure from reality.

The problem with Roberts is he treated everyone poorly, including coworkers.

Big difference between being tough and being an ahole.

It’s all a risk right now, but I think it’s a bad idea to ignore either side. You’re going to have to re-recruit your roster every single year, but Auburn also can’t ignore the holes we have going into the next couple of years. Freeze obviously feels comfortable with the patience of the money men, but the fans will wear thin if he isn’t in a clearly better place in year three. We lose a lot of starting pieces going into this season and offensive improvement is no guarantee with the inexperience at key positions. If some of that high school talent gets bought away going into year three, Hugh will have a lot of ground to make up in the portal, which he hasn’t handled all that well to date.

Success as a head coach to me seems more about overall roster management than purely high school recruiting. Freeze is gambling a bit. We’ll see how that works out.

Seems like a lot of gnashing of teeth to me. If on field production doesn't make a marked improvement this year then it really isn't going to matter, and it improves then it's just a matter of signing the checks.

You say as he gets replaced by Nix who is what?? A Freeze disciple. Lot of rumors flying around but i'm talking about what is actually happening. An Auburn man is resigning and Freeze is replacing him with one of his guys. Thats exactly what is happening lol

So it's better for Freeze to hire some random dude he doesn't have a prior coaching relationship with, like say Philip Montgomery, and lets just see if it works out, as opposed to a guy he's worked with and had great success. Gotcha.

Or maybe your plan is to not hire anyone to replace him?

According to a report from KVAL CBS in Eugene, Ore., the next head coach could already be in Tuscaloosa.

"As we did report before, I do, I previously worked in Alabama - in Tuscaloosa. Of course, I do have some sources there," said anchor Brandon Kamerman. "We did confirm that Lanning is in Tuscaloosa - in Alabama. It doesn't mean the job is signed - the contract is signed, but he's there and what I was told is that the players were told a decision will be made in the next 72 hours"

Kammerman spent time in Tuscaloosa as WVUA23's Assistant Sports Director from 2015-18 before accepting the Sports Director position for KVAL in Oregon.

Just curious if English is this cat's first language.

Yeah I don’t fault him for prioritizing recruiting , but insiders were saying how great of an offensive mind that PM was (and no doubt he probably is) but clearly it was a major failure at Auburn. My issue is the constant throwing the OC under the bus , basically saying the gameplan was poor but it wasn’t me…:okay but you are the head coach, so it ultimately falls at your feet.  The thing that gets me is the hypocrisy I see around here when Harsin did it, it was a major fail. Anywho, I am rooting for freeze and glad he is getting back to his roots. Go back to calling plays man. If he makes it work with PT, he deserves all his flowers.

Not discounting your sources but the prevailing view of the Montgomery hire was kind of a head scratch, certainly not as highly regarded as the Roberts hire, which on paper seemed good.

So he can't recruit and game plan at the same time, so the fix is fire OC, fire DC and become the OC and be permanently responsible for game planning and play calling ...genius.

The failed HC playbook.  Get in over your head.  Make bad hires. Inability to manage at the new level. Fire coordinator and takeover their role.  Get in more over your head........

May be a good idea to wait and see who we get as DC and assistants before you get too high on that soapbox.
