Nix as OC makes sense. It’s Freeze’s offense but Nix gets an expanded role, plus he’s a stud recruiter. Him and Carnell know each other from high school and they could kill it on the recruiting trail in Alabama and Mississippi.

Thornton is also a good recruiter. In addition to the excellent results of the OLs he puts on the field, Ole Miss OL commits are saying Thornton is, "a relentess recruiter."

Of course you take it. These kids deserve it with how they closed out the year and the practice would be huge. 1000% take it.

Exactly right. We also need to be breaking in that brand spanking new shiny football only facility. Time for WORK.

  3. He handled himself well at the presser and it's a good first step. All most of us want him to do is coach, recruit, develop players, win and keep his nose clean. He has been given an opportunity to be a real 2nd chance success story at Auburn just like Bruce Pearl. He wasn't in my top 4 but, now that the decision is made, it's worthy of noting America loves a good 2nd chance story. I 'think' we will be ok.

First off: I want him to stay. I love what he did over the last four games and the players obviously love and respond to him.

I would love it if in six years he becomes our Nick Saban and coaches at Auburn for the rest of his life. But that’s where my question comes from: if I envision a future where Caddy is the head coach is it better for him to go somewhere else, coach under some different systems, see what he can learn from them, see what works and what doesn’t, etc?

Or can he do that just as effectively under Freeze?

Just something I’ve been mulling even before Freeze was hired and wondered what others thought.

He should stay, observe and learn all the details of how Freeze operates as a head coach.  It's the perfect opportunity for Caddy.

Here is one thing that’s good.Hugh knows this is likely his last shot. If he makes another mistake like at OM he will get a life time ban from D1 and he knows it. Also Hugh  has always been a good coach on the field  everywhere he has been. Nick Saban actually tried to hire Hugh ( twice I believe) and the SEC asked him not to, so if Saban thought he was good then he probably is. So let’s just give it a chance. I doubt seriously it will be any worse than Harsin.

    @Eagle Eye 7

Hugh wasn't in the top 5 on my list but I did say this about him. Out of all the candidates mentioned he was probably the one coach who would appreciate the opportunity the most and that he would work hard because of that. When it comes to football, he definitely has the ability to do a good job. What's done is done so we'll just have to see how it shakes out on the personal side. He does have a Southern accent so there is that.

Cuz nothing says RESPECT like a phony interview.

Well not having one would show even less would it not ? It costs you nothing. He has done enough to deserve it so you do it and unite the fan base going into the era of the new coach.

It’s not going to be about them anymore than the egg bowl will be about Ole miss. It will be about CLK and he clearly loves the attention.

He does but no use in helping it blow up before the game. Let Caddy and the team have their day.

    Weird headline but ok.
guys how else would this work?
    let’s celebrate!

Wait to announce it until after the IB. Caddy and the team have earned the right to have the IB be about them instead of a new coach. I would also make sure Caddy got the respect of a formal interview before a final announcement. After all that is done, announce the heck out of it.

The 10 minutes that the SECN showed after the game is why Auburn is one of the best jobs for a head coach in the country. We should aim high and get whoever we want.

I noticed that too. The SECN didn't want to leave that game after it was over. They knew something special was going on and they wanted people to see it.

  10. That was more than just a football game tonight, that was an experience. You could feel how special it was as you watched from home and see it by the reaction of the players and those in the stadium. There was a big smile on almost everyone's face most of the night as the fans cheered the team on. You could tell the fans were having fun all night. The team got a lift from this experience and played very hard, that came through too. Caddy is something special and has done a wonderful job for Auburn. Yes, it was a special night.

  11. The question is the "last" QB to develop at Auburn. My choice would be Nick Marshall who was better year over year in passing (yds+556, TDs+6, pass%+1.34) in addition to his rushing ability. More importantly he was a better leader his Senior season. I really do miss watching Nick run the offense for Auburn.

  12. I was reading on another site that we are going to need 40-45 new players added to the roster before next year. That being the case, the next HC had better be able to acquire good talent. A talented QB, OL and DL are a must.

  13. A couple points. Deion is a 55 year old man now, not a college kid to be critiqued making tackles one way or the other. When it comes to coaching at Auburn vs supporting HBCUs, he can do both and there are several ways for him to do just that.

How would he explain to a kid to pick AU over a smaller school ? It's an easier path to get noticed and make it to the NFL. Speaking of professional football, that is what major CFB is now. To that point, Deion knows professional football and the NFL. That is yet another thing about him that good players value.

I know. Of course, I fully realize he has baggage but if a southern Baptist, evangelical Christian school can forgive him and sign him to a 10 year contract, why can’t we? It actually seems like we have some pretty good coaching options.

    @AU-24

Yes we do. The names mentioned in public each have their strengths and weaknesses. Because of that, we all have our favorites depending on what we think Auburn needs the most. I think it's recruiting but others may have different priorities.

But from the current pool of Kiffin, Deion, Grimes, Freeze and Lanning, I don't think we will go wrong with any of them. We both have our choices but just watch, some coach will come out of the blue and we'll all get caught off guard, LOL.

Yes. But theres 4-5 coaches that can get us back to beating the miss schools and arky. And we’ll feel better for 2 years. It’s the “5* wall” beyond that where we usually start firing coaches. Imo We’re so desperate and panic’d right now - we’ll run back to what keeps us in the middle. The case for kiffen and prime is getting past uga, the case for everyone else is getting better.

I agree, we need to do something big in recruiting now.

My guess. We hire freeze. We get better for 2 years. Hit the same 8-9 win uga/ bama/lsu gus wall. Fire in 3-4 years. Start cycle again. It’s about elite 5* recruiting. And we just struggle with the concept.

I'll have to say, Freeze did show his coaching ability in Arky game. I'm watching the MSU game and it's evident we need more talent in the roster. That has to be priority #1 imo.

Exactly! I have no doubt he will recruit well. At the same time, why do people think he’s going to steal every five star from Sabin or Smart? Because he got one five star to commit to Jackson State?

The bigger unknown is: how will he coach at a pwr five school? How will he coach in the SEC? Everyone’s talking about his recruiting but how about his coaching?  Check Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M.

All these great recruits he allegedly got at Jackson State, and he has five losses there. Just too many unknowns.

With Freeze, Kiffin or Stoops we pretty much know exactly what we are getting.

@AU-24 Hugh Freeze and his Liberty team just beat Arkansas. NOW what are we going to do ?    :-\
