Man. The Auburn fan base is kinda oblivious to the current state of Kentucky football.

We are talking about the Kentucky that lost to Miss State, UT, South Carolina, and only beat Arky by 4.  They finished 4th in the East.

@NorthGATiger Because we have Zierer who was healthy at the time & we think as much if not more of & Bro-Hamm has made a move at RT & appears to have anchored down the position for next season. The staff didn't see a need for Flax til the Zierer injury.

Actually we haven't thrown much of a net on OL recruiting before this season & it's well documented.

Nope. At that point he hadn't played any football since graduating high school & he had no offers or interest from anyone out of high school. This past September was the 1st time he played football in a competitive game since high school

    Never have. Just stating reality.

Great news.  Sounds like once Zierer gets healthy we will be good to go.

By casting a big net I am referring to the kids we have to scurry for after the early signing day.  Kids like Ira Henry, Bamidelli Olaseni, and Dawand Jones.  Kids we were not hard after until the last minute and we could not make up ground.

Big Zs injury was unfortunate for obvious reasons but the timing was bad for us too. It happened at the end of November & we moved on Flax immediately. Problem is UK had at least a 6 week head start & likely longer. They likely have quite a bit better relationship with him & his family.

Here is the million dollar question.  If Flax is good like we think he is then why in the world did we not even approach the guy until a short while ago?  I understand Buskey and the injury to Z but I swear its as if every year this staff zeroes in  on a small portion, waits until that small sample size does not work on early signing day, and then throws a huge net to try to get anyone to come.  If Flax is worthy of a scholly then he should have been approached in August.  There is no defending what this staff has done as far as OL recruiting.

@McLoofus, Gurley, Henry... who is the other marquee player?

Seriously?  Sony, Ingram, Chubb, and even Kenyan Drake.  In the same time period we have CAP who doesn't play much, Corey Grant who doesn't play much, KJ who is having a decent year, and Mason who had 1 decent year.  Our ability to put RB's in the NFL and excel ended 14 years ago with Caddy and Ronnie.  Outside of Auburn nobody nationally knows who Ben Tate and Peyton Barber are.   When it comes to the NFL our numbers are horrid compared to our rivals at the RB position.  LSU is much better than us.

    Here is what kids see

    Since the 2005 Draft
    Bama- 10 RB's drafted.  Out of those 2-1st, 3- 2nd
    UGA- 6 Drafted.  3-1st and 1-2nd
    LSU- Since 2010 8 RB's drafted

Auburn- 5 drafted  3-2nd ( Ben Tate, Kenny Irons, KJ )

That is 5 RB's drafted from Auburn in 15 years and due to injury or bad luck KJ is the only one any kid would know about.

  5. This is the most important aspect to our season.  If these plays are not implemented and utilized in our offense then everything else won't matter.  Furthermore it would magnify the consensus that Gus hired Lindsey to call Gus' plays and nothing more.  These are elementary schemes that any coach would use to help the QB, and inexperienced OL, and RB's who struggle with pass pro.  Only an imbecile would go into this season running 25 yard pass patterns in blitzing situations.

In 2017, Jarrett Stidham was often affected by the pass rush, and especially by blitzes. There are many ways to beat a blitz, depending on how well it’s executed, but Auburn didn’t employ many of those in 2017. With what appears to be an exceptionally talented group of wide receivers, will Chip Lindsey include more “blitz beaters” in his offense? Will Jarrett Stidham be able to execute those he has in his arsenal? A scheme that takes advantage of a blitzing defense can lighten the load on a young offensive line in a major way. With a re-tooled offensive line and a stable of unproven running backs, Auburn’s offense may be required to lean heavily on it’s passing game at times this season. Controlling the pass rush will almost certainly be a key component of that circumstance.

I get the sentiment, but some of the guys recently “purged” were mega-recruiters. Sumlin in particular.

I agree on Sumlin but he was not a smart recruiter.  Sumlin mirrored Richt in that he would have top classes with players that might not fill needs.  It's great to get a ton of top WRs and QBs but if you don't get the other parts then it won't matter.

If we get him a couple more LB's the DB's that seem to be leaning to us (2 to 3) and maybe one more true DT and we will have hit a home run on D side of the ball. I believe it is doable.  Then we need a really good RB and another very good O-Lineman preferably a tackle but a stud guard/center and we will have had a great class.  I think the tough part will be the O-Lineman.  I realize that would give us 21 or 22. But it would be a great nucleus and we would have hit all of our needs except a stud OT.

Despite some of the bad news lately we still potentially have a great class. We just need to finish up strong and keep the ones we have.

Agree.  I think it will be hard to get a RB and OT at this time that we are wanting.  If we can't get our top targets to flip then I would almost rather hammer on 2020 prospects instead of signing 3rd tier guys just to sign them.

The overuse of a RB is not only about the amount of carries in a season but also about having a game plan and team rely solely on the shoulders of one guy.  Ride or die with KJ.  In the end we got less with more of KJ instead of more with less of KJ.

E, I stated this earlier in the threads but they are like Ray Charles meets no comprende.

Show me how times Swift ran against us game one , Notre Dame, Bama,  South Carolina. (The close games) Sony wasn’t a reserve indeed.

Swift had almost the same amount of carries in every game.

Thanks. Georgia beat ten opponents by 21 or more points. 11 by 14. Many of them, way more than 21. Even Gus doesn’t  mind using our reserve backs like Martin when Auburn is up a dozen and rolling.

Chubb nor Sony nor Swift were reserves.  UGA had 2 other backs with at least 50 carries

How about this as well.  Playing 5 games against some of the best run stopping defenses in the country.   Compared to UGA’s cream puff schedule.

Auburn played against 5 top 50 run defenses in the country

UGA played against 7 top 50 run defenses in the country

I’m sure KJ wishes he could’ve had more longed runs. But really, our line wasn’t great at all and KJ wasn’t exactly bursting brought tbe holes. The lower ypc isn’t an indictment on our coaching philosophy.

     B I N G O  it’s some of all of the above.

No. It's am indictment on our recruiting philosophy in the 2016 and 2017 classes.

  13. 11 minutes ago, mcgufcm said:

We'll have to agree to disagree. UGA had inflated per carry averages for two reasons:  (1) they had rare talent at the position and (2) they had a very effective passing game. The same two guys (Chubb and Michel) combined for a 5.24 ypc a year earlier. Why? The line wasn't as good, and Eason didn't scare people.

As for the wear and tear discussion, I think carries per season is the right way to measure it. I don't care if you played 5 games or 15. How many carries did you have that season? If you want to cut it more finely to make your point, feel free, but you're not convincing me with that. Kerryon's carries over his career were not out of line with other top backs in the SEC. Kerryon's carries over the last two years weren't out of line. Kerryon's single season peak wasn't all that crazy. The only difference is, he got hurt. If Chubb had gotten injured, people would've said UGA ran him too much during his career, but he didn't. So they don't.

If you look at Kerryon's carries last year, they're less than Mason (313) and Artis-Payne (303) and a bump above Kenny Irons (256) or Ben Tate (263). I don't think any of those guys, Kerryon included, were misused or run into the ground. Kerryon just got injured, and we were too dumb to trust the system and play the other guys.

I don't think we are that far off on our thinking.  The talent disparity between Chubb/Sony and KJ is why I was using the YPC.  Chubb averaged 6.55 YPC for his career compared to 4+ for KJ.  My opinion is that we need to recruit better backs and more of them in a run first play action system.  You can't have 1 injury to Pettway create an issue where you have to either play an injured back in KJ or rely on someone who has hardly any game time experience.  The overuse of a RB is not only about the amount of carries in a season but also about having a game plan and team rely solely on the shoulders of one guy.  Ride or die with KJ.  In the end we got less with more of KJ instead of more with less of KJ.

Fixed my post for you. I asked if you had similar thoughts with CAP’s great season?

But really, the whole paragraph was explaining that we had a back that wasn’t going to rack up huge ypc numbers because of his running style.

I don’t understand your reasoning behind assuming low ypc is the product of overuse.

I posted earlier that Cap had 2 really good seasons at AU with 6.7 yards per carry in 2013 and 6.1 yards per carry in 2014.  I am not saying that a low YPC means overuse.  I am saying that KJ led the SEC in rushing due to the amount of touches he had and not because of how good he was or how good of a rushing team AU was.  The lower YPC means that either A) He was not as good of a back as his peers who were within 45 yards of him with far fewer runs or B ) Auburn was not a great run blocking team when they were 4th in the league in rushing or C) the guy could have used a breather from another back so that he could play to his full abilities without being worn out or injured.
