AUJarhead 70
I'm honestly shocked at the number of guard/reserve bases closing. Both bases that I was assigned to in the reserves are on the list to be closed. It's one thing to be in the reserves and have an hour ot two drive to drill, but I wonder if the pentagon put any thought into what will happen if they make these reservists travel further for drill weekend? Al, Ranger, or GoAU, do you know what the army will do with the units from these closed bases? I'm not in contact with any of the Marines that I drilled with, so I don't have any idea what would happen. Thankfully, Scott Air Force Base, just outside of St Louis, avoided the cut. Scott AFB is the 2nd largest employer in the STL metro area.
TexasTiger 13,136
We have the greatest reliance on the Guard and Reserve than we've ever had, and we close more bases making it harder for folks to serve. We greatly increase our defense budget and engage in deficit spending not to make ourselves safer, but rather to line the pockets of Bush supporters. Don't believe me, follow the money. Millions of dollars unaccounted for in Iraq and the "conservatives" don't care. The congress looks the other way. I know, more excuses, no accountability. This means that the department's books are off by $15 billion, about a third of what it spends annually. But this isn't just a case of bad accounting. Education department whistleblower John Gard suspects that "senior management officials" in the department had been "setting up the Agency to rip it off" and that millions of dollars or more have been embezzled. Gard says there was no security over the system to prevent embezzlement and no audit trail to find out where the money was going. There were $100Ms missing in the last Clinton Education Budget, no receipts at all, no one cared then either. I suggest we find all taxpayer monies and squeeze the Fed Govt for more every day. Ranger12 46
TexasTiger...don't even try to go there about Bush making it harder on the guard and reserves. I served during the Clinton years and the reason we rely on the guard/reserves and the reason the military is stretched so thin now is because of all the military downsizing that Clinton did!!! Anyway, Congress basically dictates that the current administration, regardless of who it is, makes some sort of closing recommendations. You make accusations that the Bush admin is targeting the guard/reserves who we rely on heavily, but would you rather him target the full-time branches? You would then say "why is the Bush administration targeted our full-time military, which is stretched so thin?". Damned if he does, damned if he don't, so please save the bs. AUJarhead, as far as I know if your bases are closed and there is not a base within a certain radius for you to be able to continue your obligation, they will let you out of the rest of your contract. However, with us in a "stop-loss" situation, that may not apply. I do know that if they require you to drive a long distance, they will pay to put you up in a hotel for the weekend if necessary if billeting is not available where you will be pulling duty. So Clinton was responsible for inheriting Bush I and Def. Sec. Cheney's downsizing plans (do some homework), and he's still responsible for the choices Bush has made. WARNING: I am about to disrupt your delusion with actual facts: With Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld looking to significantly shrink the nation's military infrastructure, experts agree California cannot hope to escape unscathed."I don't think it's a realistic scenario, personally, to think that no base will be closed. But we're just hoping for the best," said Jim Spagnole, director of the state's Office of Military and Aerospace Support. Base Realignment and Closure, or BRAC, is part of the military's ongoing attempt to transform itself to meet post-Cold War needs. Closing bases is expected to save money over the long run. Base realignments are aimed at advancing the ability of the military services to operate and train together. Rumsfeld has until May 16 to recommend which bases should be closed or realigned in the upcoming round, but Pentagon officials have indicated the list will be released sometime this week. Rumsfeld's recommendations will go to the independent Base Closing and Realignment Commission, which will submit its own list to President Bush by Sept. 8. The president can either accept or reject the list in its entirety. Congress must then make the same choice. Because it will take seven votes on the nine-member commission to take a base off Rumsfeld's list - more than the simple majority required in past base closing rounds - communities' first hope is not to be on it at all. http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews...ia/11596971.htm Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld is proposing to close and shrink hundreds of bases to create a leaner, more cost-effective force. If accepted, the plan would alter the domestic military landscape and greatly affect the four services branches and communities that are home to the installations. Rumsfeld and Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are to testify Monday before a congressionally chartered commission that will review the base-closing proposal before sending it to President Bush this fall. The plan recommends closing or reducing forces at 62 major bases and reconfiguring hundreds of others  775 "minor closures and realignments" to be exact  to save billions of dollars a year. Seeking to free up money to improve warfighting capabilities, the Pentagon wants to eliminate inefficient bases, streamline services and promote "jointness" among the military branches. At the same time, the military is trying to reposition troops  in the United States and abroad  to face current threats. "The president charged the secretary with moving our military into the 21st century and moving us beyond the Cold War. This is a significant part of that," said Powell Moore, an assistant defense secretary during Bush's first term. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/05/13/politics/main695183.shtmlCivics lesson: The defense secretary is appointed by and reports to the President.
