UK issues assessment of “gender affirming care” in the NHS

Recommended Posts

The biggest take aways are the lack of reliable data on the effectiveness and safety of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones and the need to focus more on the mental health issues of young people seeking care.

Andrew Sullivan explores it in this article and ponders whether they’ll be accountability for those who promoted and fought to shut down any questioning or debate. The European medical establishment is now approaching consensus. I suspect our polarized society will become even more entrenched until the lawsuits become common. Our healthcare system is so much more decentralized and the most profit driven in the western world. That, unfortunately, leads to problems lawsuits ultimately need to address.

A key reference:

I’ll leave it to the editor-in-chief of the British Medical Journal to address that point:

One emerging criticism of the Cass review is that it set the methodological bar too high for research to be included in its analysis and discarded too many studies on the basis of quality. In fact, the reality is different: studies in gender medicine fall woefully short in terms of methodological rigour; the methodological bar for gender medicine studies was set too low, generating research findings that are therefore hard to interpret.

The methodological quality of research matters because a drug efficacy study in humans with an inappropriate or no control group is a potential breach of research ethics. Offering treatments without an adequate understanding of benefits and harms is unethical. All of this matters even more when the treatments are not trivial; puberty blockers and hormone therapies are major, life altering interventions …

The evidence base for interventions in gender medicine is threadbare, whichever research question you wish to consider—from social transition to hormone treatment.

The main non-profit in the UK promoting “all things trans” including medicalization of children is Stonewall. Interesting thread:

Bill Maher just posted this about gender affirming care in Europe as opposed to the US.  He says we are now the outlier.

People have been trying to say this for years. I'm glad a thorough review was done to confirm it.

COVID deniers and anti-vaxxers aren't the only ones that bend or assume the science to confirm their political and emotional commitments.

Long overdue for at least some country in the English speaking word to take a critical SCIENTIFIC view.
