Auburn names former Texas A&M assistant coach Jordan Szabo head women’s tennis coach

Former Texas A&M tennis player and assistant women’s tennis coach Jordan Szabo has been named Auburn’s head women’s tennis coach, the university announced Friday.

The hiring of Szabo comes months following the abrupt dismissal of former Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley, who was fired on Jan. 28.

During the last two seasons as the associate head coach of Texas A&M’s women’s tennis team, Szabo has helped the Aggies clinch three consecutive Southeastern Conference regular season championships, four straight appearances in the conference tournament finals and a pair of trips to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.

“Jordan is an outstanding evaluator/recruiter, has been a direct part of championships, and cares deeply about the development of student-athletes both on and off the tennis court,” Cohen said in a release. “We are extremely excited to have Jordan and his wife Grace join the Auburn family.”

After having played a successful career on Texas A&M’s men’s team from 2012-15, Szabo immediately took to the coaching ranks at his alma mater, first as a student-assistant for the men’s tennis team, followed by a brief stint as an assistant at Texas Tech.

Come the 2017-18 season, Szabo returned to Texas A&M, this time as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the women’s team in College Station, where he has spent every year since — five as an assistant coach and two as the program’s associate head coach.

In that seven-year span, Szabo has been named the ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year twice.

A native of Bayswater, Victoria, Australia, Szabo finished his youth tennis career ranked as on of the top-five players in Australia before taking his talents to Texas A&M, where he tallied 82 singles match victories and 72 doubles match victories across his college career.

Szabo is set to take the reins of an Auburn program that’s currently ranked No. 17 in the country by ITA and is competing in the opening rounds of the NCAA Championships this weekend.

“I am so excited to be the head women’s tennis coach at Auburn,” Szabo said in a release. “I will give my all to Auburn and the women’s tennis program and be relentless in my dedication to helping the student-athletes develop and elevating the program further with the goal of winning championships.”

Assistant coach of the year. Gotta be a pretty young guy if he just graduated in 2015. I would guess a sport like tennis recruiting is 90% of the job

I would think a young guy should relate well and recruit well but sadly NIL probably comes into play here also.

Sad but true. A&M has virtually unlimited NIL finds. I hope this guy can operate successfully in a more austere environment.
