Some speculate the loser of the SECCG will be the odd one out when referring to bowl games. From the Baton Rouge Advocate:

Rabalais: LSU-Georgia loser could be victim of bowl unfairness

By SCOTT RABALAIS

Advocate sportswriter

If college football's bowl system were about fairness, then Notre Dame wouldn't get a BCS bid just because it's Notre Dame -- 10-1 Oregon would be going to the Fiesta Bowl instead.

If the bowls were about fairness, then 10-1, No. 3-ranked LSU wouldn't have to worry about falling past one of the Southeastern Conference's Jan. 2 bowls to the Peach or (is it possible?) the Independence Bowl if it loses Saturday's SEC Championship Game to Georgia.

But the bowls are not about fairness. They are about selling tickets and pulling down plum TV ratings. And if you are not what they are looking for, you may get the cold shoulder no matter what your résumé looks like.

Potentially, if LSU loses the SEC Championship, the Tigers could be staring at a string of bowls that arguably all have someone else they would rather invite.

Start with the Capital One Bowl, where LSU went last year. The Orlando bowl has taken the SEC Championship Game loser four of the last six seasons, but doesn't have to. Last year of course it opted for LSU instead of inviting championship game loser Tennessee, which went to the Cotton.

Capital One Executive Director Tom Mickle says the Tigers are still high on his bowl's list. They sure are. Both of them. All indications are the Capital One is enamored with Auburn, which is sitting there at 9-2 and No. 9 in the country and won't be coming off the downer of a loss in Atlanta.

That leaves the AT&T Cotton and Outback bowls. The Cotton has right of first refusal on a team from the SEC West, the Outback on a team from the SEC East.

The Cotton, which had LSU three years ago, is apparently smitten with 9-2, 14th-ranked Alabama to play Texas Tech. The reason? The Crimson Tide hasn't been to Dallas since the 1981 season.

The Outback? Well, Outback Bowl President/CEO Jim McVay talks a good game and that he could be happy with any of six SEC teams. But history dictates that the Outback doesn't want to be a team player in the SEC bowl pecking order.

The rest of the conference is still steamed over the fact in 1998 the Outback took 6-5 Kentucky over 8-3 Georgia, which was relegated to the Peach.

The Outback is apparently enamored with 7-4 South Carolina. If true, that would not only potentially give the shaft to the LSU-Georgia loser but Florida, which did lose to South Carolina but at 8-3 and ranked No. 17 may find itself in the Independence Bowl.

Why would the Outback want South Carolina? Several reasons, all associated with green. The Gamecock fans travel in legendary numbers (they averaged 27,000 per their two Outback Bowl trips in 2000 and 2001). As for Georgia, it was in the game last year. And then there's the Steve Spurrier factor. Spurrier alone probably puts a few fannies in the seats, and he darn sure gets people to roll out of bed on Jan. 2 and turn on the TV.

On one level, you can understand if the Outback Bowl is all about self-preservation. Once in awhile. But if it picks South Carolina it will put the SEC in a bind.

The SEC has got to protect the loser of the championship game. Otherwise the game begins to lose credibility. If the runner-up has at least nine wins, it should be playing in a January bowl. Period.

Starting next year with the bowl contracts that will be in place for the next four seasons, the Capital One, Cotton and Outback will each be required to take the championship game loser at least once. Finally, some fairness creeping into the bowl biz.

Of course, that does no good this year if the Outback follows its typical renegade course.

The Outback is the only bowl LSU hasn't been to among the SEC tie-ins in the last 10 years, and frankly, that's one of its problems. The Tigers aren't the fresh catch they once were to many of these bowls.

Of course, it would be to the Outback, which hasn't had LSU since the 1988 season. But one gets the impression that the Outback, which hasn't invited an SEC West team in nine years (that was Alabama in the 1996 season) and doesn't want to. At least not if that team is from west of Tuscaloosa.

So what will happen? The optimist in me wants to say the Cotton or Outback will see the wisdom of inviting a 10-2, top 10 Tigers team if it loses Saturday. LSU already has orders for 15,000-17,000 tickets to the bowls in question, plus tickets are surely still to be bought.

Plus, if Michigan is the Big Ten opponent in the Outback as expected, a match with LSU would pit LSU's first-year coach Les Miles against his alma mater in a first-time meeting between the two national programs.

Pretty good story line, no?

A logical man says yes. But the realist in me says that LSU and Georgia better get familiar with their favorite Atlanta night spots and greasy spoons.

Don't worry. The SEC cannot, will not let its championship game loser slide beyond the Peach to the Independence Bowl. So LSU and Georgia can at the very least count on playing their bowl games in Atlanta, one on Dec. 30 in the Peach and the other on Jan. 2 in the Sugar.

Of course, if the prospect of returning to Atlanta for the Peach Bowl isn't appetizing to the Tigers or Bulldogs, there is something they can do about it.

Win.

I think Auburn is a good lock for the Capitol One. If Lsu losses....no matter how unfair it might be, they might be saying hello to the Peach Bowl or Independence Bowl.

Nothing like whining before they've even lost the game.

On a serious note, I have heard that it is possible Bama would miss out on the Cotton Bowl and LSU would get the nod if they do not make it to the Sugar Bowl.

personally, i think this guy's full of it. this really does seem to be a lot of doom and gloom over nothing. uga might get passed over by the outback, but that will only happen b/c of the fact that they played there last year. that's a legit worry for a bowl to keep inviting the same team.

if lsu loses the title game (fingers crossed), they're going to tampa. the outback couldn't ask for a better game than lsu (10-2) against michigan (record doesn't matter they're one of 5 teams (ND, OSU, Michigan, Alabama, and Nebraska) that can draw on name only... usc is getting close). plus, the cajuns travel well.

On a side note, I went to Orlando last year and had a blast despite losing on the last play (that hurt so bad). There were other LSU fans anywhere you went and I'm sure it's going to be the same for AU. Cap One is a great trip to make.

Hopefully you guys will get a decent opponent and kick the crap out of them. That's what makes any road trip truly fun.
