Injury won't keep Taylor out of opener

AUBURN - Dr. James Andrews, famed Birmingham orthopedist, confirmed the good news for Auburn on Saturday.

Senior wide receiver Courtney Taylor is not seriously injured and should be ready to play against Washington State on Sept. 2.

Taylor had to be helped off the field Friday, unable to put pressure on his right knee. After examining the knee, Auburn doctors and trainers concluded it was a sprain. Andrews confirmed their diagnosis Saturday.

It isn't certain when Taylor, counted on to show the way for an inexperienced receiving corps, will return to practice. But with three weeks remaining before the opener, his playing status is not likely to be in question.

Irons limping: Senior cornerback David Irons suffered a strained hamstring Saturday. Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said he would be out "a few days."

But Irons wanted no part of being out even for a day.

"It hurts, but I've just got to play through it," Irons said. "This isn't the time to be sitting out."

Tuberville said nose guard Tez Doolittle (Achilles) and defensive end Marquies Gunn (groin) should be back at full speed in a matter of days.

Productive practice: Tuberville liked most of what he saw in Saturday morning's two-hour practice in full gear.

"We had a solid practice," Tuberville said. "I thought the guys came out and focused pretty well. We got a few offensive linemen back, which really helped."

Tuberville said he did not know when the first game-type scrimmage, originally scheduled for Saturday morning, would be held.

"I'd like to scrimmage soon, but we're not going to jam it in there just to say we're scrimmaging," Tuberville said. He said he would wait for word from trainers on when some of the injured players can return.

The schedule: The Tigers will return to the practice field this afternoon, have their final two-practice day Monday and their final practice on the intramural fields Tuesday. They'll take Wednesday off for the first day of classes before returning to practice Thursday.

Please note that they have now swapped the Monday off day for Wednesday due to classes starting.
