Poland wants Reagan statue.

Opponents of Poland's former communist regime reportedly want to pay a posthumous homage to US President Ronald Reagan by erecting his statue in the place of a Soviet-era monument.

In an open letter to the mayor of the southwestern city of Katowice, the former anti-regime activists said that the staunchly anti-communist Reagan had been a "symbol of liberty," the Polish news agency PAP reported.

As a result, they said, he deserved to become the centrepiece of the city's Freedom Square, replacing a monument to the Soviet troops who drove out the occupying Nazis in 1945.

They also said that they wanted the site to be rebaptised "Ronald Reagan Freedom Square."

City hall spokesman Waldemar Bojarun said that Katowice's councillors would consider the issue.

Bojarun said that he had "enormous respect" for Reagan.

However, he said, the proposal could cost an estimated 500,000 zlotys (128,000 euros, 168,000 dollars) and the city had "other pressing needs."

There are already separate plans to erect a statue in memory of Reagan in the centre of the Polish capital, Warsaw, which would be paid-for from private funds.

Reagan, who dubbed the Soviet Union an "evil empire," is widely credited by Poles with having driven communism to the wall.

The conservative Republican made fighting communism the cornerstone of his 1980-1988 presidency, and backed Poland's Solidarity trade union after it went underground when the regime declared martial law in 1981.

Reagan died in June 2004 at the age of 93.

I'm sure someone can make a statue with Ray-gun slobbering all over himself in a wheelchair. It would befit the old coot, and his false claim to ending communism. Communism ended itself.

The sad thing is that you think you behave in a superior fashion. This is one of the most pathetic posts I've seen on this board.

You overlook what BF posted and instead comment on my response ? THAT's what is so pathetic. I don't 'think' I behave in a superior fashion, that's just your view on what I post. I'll take that as a compliment.

Just be glad I didn't post how I REALLY felt .

Look TT, Raptor can't help it. He is just as frustrated as the rest of us are. Our representation doesn't represent us, and people are angry. The resultant being that people find things that they disagree on and end up hurting one another in process of communicating their anger. It's just another defense mechanism used by those who have no idea what they are experiencing or how to control it. It's the little raptor inside the big raptor, coming out to play ball.

No, punk. That's not it and you know it. You went WAY out of line by ridiculing a great man, President Reagan, but then you heartlessly mocked anyone who had a family member suffer from Alzheimers . For that, you're a miserable piece of $hit. The thread was a great story of how a once Communist nation , now free, feels a sense of gratitude toward a man who could have easily ignored them and their plight . Even if you didn't care for Reagan, you could show an ounce of character and acknowledge that the people of Poland , at least, are free to honor whom ever they want, and that by them choosing an American President, is a true sign of how others see us.

TT, I'll confess that I let loose on this post, but I'm sick and tired of miserable pieces of $hit like BF trolling through every damn post and trashing America, trashing anything remotely good at all. That's all this loser ever does, and it sickens me that he shows up on our boards. He is contrary to everything the Auburn creed promotes, and I simply felt like saying so. As for my ' many hateful ' post, this is probably my 1st one. You simply disagreeing with my post does not make them 'hateful'.

I believe Bush has done more to hurt family members with Alzheimer's disease than I have, in that, he could have spent more money on stem cell research.

But no, he would rather give it to the religious groups for whatever. And, Ray-gun didn't care for people who were hurting financially while his little economic experiment which caused people to lose their life savings trying to survive. No he did not care, he would have lavish dances at the ballroom in the White House while homeless people suffered on the streets. Alzheimer's is a befitting way for him to have gone out. I loathed Ray-gun.

Umm....stem cell research wasn't on the table during Reagan's presidency. And the entire economic boom of the past 25 years stems from several economic reforms instituted by Reagan--the lowering of the tax rates and the lowering of capital gains tax rates. Both allowed people to actually have more take-home pay, leading to more investment, which gave businesses more capital with which to expand, hire more workers, purchase more equipment, raise productivity, etc. etc. etc.

As far as losing life savings, what on earth are you babbling about this time? Life savings were being wiped out in the Carter presidency when inflation was over 12% a year and interest rates were at 20%, both basic results of the country's reliance of the time upon Keynsian economics. My father was an architect and my mother was a real estate agent at the time when nobody was building anything, and families were under assault from the worst set of economic pressures since the Great Depression. The entire economy was grinding to a halt with permanent unemployment rates at 7-8%. The "little experiment" as you term it lit a fire under the American economy, resulting if significantly higher productivity, permanently lower unemployment rates, higher investment rates and accumulation of equity by people of all classes. The only people who were hurt by the economic reforms of the early 80s were the people who were milking a very bad and inefficient system.

BF, I think your basic emotional problem is that you are envious of people who have actually succeeded in life. What angers you about Reagan is not what he accomplished, but really that you either lacked the diligence or brains to take advantage of the opportunities his economy made possible. Essentially, it galls you that other people succeed, while you sit around shooting off incoherent rants that blame everybody else for your failings in life.

Oh, and back to the original topic...My uncle lives in Prague now. In my travels over there, I have met many, many eastern Europeans who grew up under Soviet rule. Without exception, every one of them was grateful for Reagan and Thatcher having the nerve to stand up to the brutal force of Soviet rule. It was the Reagan arms buildup that forced the Soviets into economic meltdown, that eventually made the liberation of Eastern Europe possible. And that's why they want to erect statues to the man in Polish town squares. A shame you're too blind to see it.

This is a perfect example of why you are such an F-ing MORON Bush has spent MORE $$ than all other Presidents COMBINED on stem cell research. What's more, he's done nothing to halt the spending of stem cell research by the private sector. All W's done is put a HOLD on more spending and use of EMBRYONIC stem cells by the FEDERAL GOV'T. Embryonic stem cells have shown ZERO potential for treatment, resulting in nothing but tumors in all tests to date. Meanwhile, there are over 100 PROVEN treatments that are being used as a result of adult stem cells. THIS SHOWS WHY YOU ARE A BLITHERING LEFT WING IDIOT!!!!!

And, Raygun didn't care for people who were hurting financially while his little economic experiment which caused people to lose their life savings trying to survive.

The Reagan recovery, thanks in large part to his tax cuts, was the greatest in US history other than the post WW2 boom.

No he did care, he would have lavish dances at the ballroom in the White House while homeless people suffered on the streets.
Good for him! He deserved to throw lavish parties, he earned it! Reagan saved this country from the malaise of Carter. The poor would have done better to help themselves in the great economy Reagan created, instead of looking for a Gov't handout.

bf, you're a socialist idiot who learned all he knows from the backs of cereal boxes and watching CNN. And you're a pathetic waste of human dna.

I read books, what do you do?

Fantasy is your favorite genre, evidently.

You broke the code Otter. Recently BF flew to South America to see Hugo.

If the first post of this thread doesn't warrant someone being banned by the mods, then I don't know what does. I'm not for censoring speech, but this being a private sight, and the mention of a president in such a fashion is extremely offensive to me. I'm not going to get involved because I will become angry and will post something that stoops to BF's level. I would be interested to know BF's background and occupation. I think it would explain a lot.

Of course, the preceeding post didn't offend the "good Republicans" here.

aumd03 gives the modern Republican view of "free speech". He's a totalitarian. That's what Bush has tapped into.

I think BF's post was in bad taste. There are numerous posts I've seen on this board that I consider to be in bad taste. Most of them either go ignored by those on the Right, or agreement is noted because most of those posts are made by people on the right about people on the left. Spare me the selective indignance.
