Obama's Hope

It's not like you're the first person to embarass my university. Capitalism isn't replaced in America everytime a Democrat gets elected. It won't be replaced with socialism if Obama gets elected either. Warren Buffet and George Soros are capitalists. A lot of idiots throw the term "socialism" around when it doesn't apply. Educate yourself and stop blaming Auburn University for your willful ignorance. B)

Man, when did you turn into such a jerk? :poke: You are letting this forum get to your head WAY too much. You have now officially turned into the exact opposite of the far right conservative zealots that you so despise.

Seriously, and don't get me wrong, I think most of your posts are intelligent and full of information (I just don't happen to agree with the view point most of the times), but I enjoy reading the democratic viewpoint to further educate myself. You haven't offered much lately but short, curt, insulting responses to people with different opinions. Maybe I am missing something, but I didn't think this guy deserved that type of response.

Remember, two wrongs don't make a right.

My "tone" tends to reflect the post I'm responding to. What do you say to an otherwise intelligent person spouting pure crap such as, "He's a socialist," while giving no evidence of that claim?

You leave out his post in the excerpt. His argument was that I was "bashing" Auburn as if challenging him was an insult to Auburn. I responded directly to that, although I think there is a degree of playfulness in both our posts. That appears to be what you are missing in this case. In fact, I could argue that you're going out of your way to step into an exchange between me and someone else to be a jerk to me. Again.

In this situation, Obama will not be running against an incumbent, but a respect centrist Republican who consistently had the political courage put distance between himself and a lot of Bush's more egregious policies.

Such as...?

Waterboarding, the runaway spending, and the unprecedented expansion of executive power among many. Why do you think so many paleoconservatives loathe the man?

My problem is that his platform is based on socialism, not capitalism. The last 50 years of history has proven that capitalism is far, far superior to socialism...

You really shouldn't use terms you don't understand.

I made an A in Economics at the highly touted educational institution Auburn University; so now you are bashing your own University?

Just because Obama does not fit the very narrow definition of a socialist and his rhetoric does not fit the narrow definition of Socialism in no way means he is not one or that he is not espousing their ideas and theories (lite). We have had this discussion in the past and you played the soft shoe about it just as all his handlers and spokesmen from the DNC are doing. The same for the racist pastor and ideas of his church. It's all OK with you guys. Y'all want the White House, so it's all OK

Nor would Obama ever be so stupid to openly say he had those idea. But the socialist did work for his election to the Senate and are working for his election as President.

Socialism

From the dictionary.

noun

1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.

3. (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.

From the socialist web site.

your questions about socialism.

Q: Doesn’t socialism mean that the government will

own and run everything?

A: Democratic Socialists do not want to create an all-powerful government bureaucracy. But we do not want big corporate bureaucracies to control our society either. Rather, we believe that social and economic decisions should be made by those whom they most affect.

Today, corporate executives who answer only to themselves and a few wealthy stockholders make basic economic decisions affecting millions of people. Resources are used to make money for capitalists rather than to meet human needs. We believe that the workers and consumers who are affected by economic institutions should own and control them.

Social ownership could take many forms, such as worker-owned cooperatives or publicly owned enterprises managed by workers and consumer representatives. Democratic Socialists favor as much decentralization as possible.

While the large concentrations of capital in industries such as energy and steel may necessitate some form of state ownership, many consumer-goods industries might be best run as cooperatives.

Democratic Socialists have long rejected the belief that the whole economy should be centrally planned. While we believe that democratic planning can shape major social investments like mass transit, housing, and energy, market mechanisms are needed to determine the demand for many consumer

Q: Private corporations seem to be a permanent

fixture in the US, so why work towards socialism?

A: In the short term we can’t eliminate private corporations, but we can bring them under greater democratic control.

The government could use regulations and tax incentives to encourage companies to act in the public interest and outlaw destructive activities such as exporting jobs to low-wage countries and polluting our environment. Public pressure can also have a critical role to play in the struggle to hold corporations accountable. Most of all, socialists look to unions make private business more responsible.

I am going to spout 'He's a Socialist' until proven otherwise. This is not a court of law where I have to provide evidence to any of my claims. And if TexasTiger is so drunk with the Obama kool-aid as it appears, no amount of evidence is going to mean anything anyway, he will just go back to his short, curt, insulting responses. (But thanks to Tigermike and jw4au for stepping in.) ;)

And while we are on the discussion of Socialism versus Capitalism, here's a simple story maybe the non Kool-aid drinkers can understand, the history of the Pilgrims' experiences after their arrival in the 1620's. The reason the Pilgrims needed the Indian's support the first few winters was because they tried to farm collectively. After the Pilgrim leaders allowed the families to farm for themselves their output increased significantly; and they never starved through a winter again. Capitalism over Socialism really is that simple...

Funny, I was always accused of drinking the Reagan kool-aid all during the 80's; history proved me right there. And besides the fact there hasn't been a major terrorist attack on the US in 6 and 1/2 years, we have a LONG way to go before we know whether Bush's attempt at transforming the Middle East can be answered as the right thing to do or not. (Assuming Obama doesn't pull all the troops out in January 2009.)
