by Charles Goldberg, Birmingham News

Thursday January 29, 2009, 7:26 PM

Safety Daren Bates of Olive Branch, Miss., committed to Auburn on Thursday after a run toward signing day that saw his stock go up. AuburnSports.com reported it.

Bates, who is 5-foot-11, 195, had offers from Auburn and Alabama, he said. He originally committed to Arkansas State.

He had 90 tackles and 4 interceptions last year. He's Auburn's 24th commitment.

I have a feeling his rating is going to go up. He transferred to a new school and hasn't been evaluated like some of the others, which is why his offers didn't come until late. But right after we offered, bammer offered and he has an offer from Tennessee as well. I'm excited about this kid.

For Comparison's sake, here's Darren Bates (2 star DB)

Ht: 5-foot-11

Wt: 195 lbs

Forty: 4.5 secs

Bench max: 325 pounds

Vertical: 38 inches

Here's Dre Kirkpatrick (5 star top rated DB in country)

Ht: 6-foot-2

Wt: 180 lbs

Forty: 4.5 secs

Bench max: 230 pounds

Vertical: 30 inches

Now of course this obviously wouldn't be the full workout statistics but these are the ones that I found that compare the two..looks like a diamond in the rough to me, beat Kirkpatrick in weight, tied in 40, beat him big time in bench and in vertical. I know you can't measure recruits just by what they do in the weight room but obviously this guy has to be a lot better then what the recruiting sites thought if he picked up an Auburn, Alabama, and Tennessee offer all in a matter of days.

if he is under 18, shouldn't he technically be called Master Bates?

Mister, Master. Any young man who can bench press me has my respect.

And he's wise beyond his age. He chose Auburn!

There was a fishing tackle store in Kingsport, TN whose slogan was "Home of the Master Baiters."

A guy named Zane Miller owned it and he was one of the funniest men I ever had the pleasure to spend some time with. He kept anyone within earshot laughing out loud.

Awesome. Glad to hear my 8 year old boy's sense of humor didn't go unnoticed.

And on that point, good night good sir, and War Eagle to you.

A big War Eagle and a good night to you, Master Dub!

hey hey, only my sense of humor is young enough for "master".

I am now old enough to be known simply as "hey you"
