AUSportTalk 4
The No. 14 Auburn baseball team will play Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champion Jacksonville State (32-24) at 6pm CT in the second game of the NCAA Auburn Regional on Friday at Plainsman Park. The game follows the 2pm matchup between at-large selection Clemson (38-21) from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Conference USA automatic qualifier Southern Miss (35-22). “Obviously it is an exciting day for Auburn Tiger baseball. It was great to see our name come up on the board,†Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said. “If you look at the teams across the country, and certainly in our Regional, it is going to be tough. That’s what this time of year is about. You look at the three teams in our Regional and we have a great challenge in front of us.†Auburn was awarded an at-large selection to the tournament after going 40-19. The selection is Auburn’s 18th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2005. A host site for the fourth time in school history, Auburn is 36-27 all-time in NCAA Regional games and last advanced out of a NCAA Regional in 1999 when it won the Auburn Regional. Auburn is one of four SEC teams to be playing host to a NCAA Regional, joining Arkansas, national No. 3 seed Florida and South Carolina. It is also one of eight SEC teams to be awarded a bid to the tournament as Alabama, LSU, Mississippi and Vanderbilt were also chosen. “This is exciting. You always want to host and play in front of your own fans and sleep in your own beds. There is no down-side to any of it,†2010 SEC Player of the Year Hunter Morris said. “They paired us with some good teams in Clemson, Southern Miss and Jacksonville State. The only one we have seen so far is Jacksonville State but it will be a fun regional.†“This is huge for us. We have worked all season and it is finally paying off. We have a lot of work to go but we are glad to be able to host and play in front of our home crowd,†said Second Team All-SEC selection Grant Dayton.
