TexasTiger 13,006
Veterans and BushDear Editor, This letter is directed at veterans who may have been swayed by the Republican–funded distortion of John Kerry’s war record. Recent polling suggests that the lies being aired by the so–called ‘Swift Boat Veterans for Truth’ are having the desired effect of weakening Kerry’s support among former military servicemen and women. So I have a question for those veterans: when all is said and done who has more credibility – a man who actually volunteered for service in Vietnam, who actually served in Vietnam, and who was wounded in battle in Vietnam; or, a man who did not volunteer for duty in Vietnam; who used his family’s influence to get into the National Guard, and whose service record indicates that even in the safe embrace of the Guard he did not report for duty for long periods of time? Who has more credibility – a man who saw the horror of war first hand, had legitimate questions about the reasons for that horror, and returned home to oppose the war which made it possible; or, a man who, by his own admission, wholeheartedly supported the war in Vietnam, but did what he could to avoid going there? I’m a Vietnam era veteran and I’m appalled by the sheer, blatant hypocrisy of this latest Republican tactic. Who is George Bush to criticize anyone who actually served in battle! .... and make no mistake: these 'Swift Boat Veterans for Truth' are nothing more than mouthpieces for the White House propaganda machine. How else may we interpret Bush’s refusal to repudiate their dishonorable and scurrilous accusations? This president can take all the chauffeured flights he wants out to aircraft carriers, dress up like some latter day ‘top gun,’ and deliver bogus ‘mission accomplished’ speeches till he chokes on his words. But when he dares to defame a real veteran, the rest of us should cry ‘foul.’ We sure as hell shouldn't be voting for him! Tom M. If Soros was smart, he'd hire his own ad man and put all of his money toward ads. Frankly, I think Moveon and ACT are incompetent.
