On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that Harsin signed a six-year contract worth an average of $5.25 million per year.

Per the report:

His salary begins at $5 million and increases by $100,000 on Jan. 1 of each year of the contract. Harsin’s bonus structure includes $100000 for winning the SEC West Devision and $250,000 for winning a SEC Championship.

He will earn $200,000 for every New Year’s Six bowl appearances; $300,000 for reach the College Football Playoff; $400,000 for reaching the national title game and $800,000 for winning a national championship.

If Auburn fires Harsin without cause, it will owe the coach 70% of his remaining salary through the contract term, half of which will be paid within 30 days of termination. The remaining 50% would be paid out over four years, and Harsin’s guarantee is not subject to offset or mitigation. Auburn had a similarly structured agreement with Harsin’s predecessor, Gus Malzahn, who was fired in December. Malzahn was owed more than $21 million on his contract, and he received half of the amount within 30 days. UCF last month hired Malzahn as its coach. Malzahn earned $6,927,589 at Auburn in 2020.

If Harsin leaves Auburn before the end of the contract, he would owe the school $7 million in the first year, $5 million in the second year and $3 million in the third year. His buyout then drops by $1 million apiece in the fourth and fifth years of the agreement.

Harsin, 44, earned $1.85 million at Boise State in 2020. He comes to Auburn with a 76-24 record in eight seasons as a head coach.

The deal is signing through Dec. 31, 2026. Harsin was hired on Dec. 22, 2020 to replace Malzahn.

On the first day of spring practices, Auburn responded to all 12 open-records requests filed by Auburn Undercover for the team's 2021 coaching staff. The program will owe its assistant coaching staff — plus strength coach Jeff Pitman — $6.84 million this year, according to signed copies of the contracts provided via email.

That's on top of new head coach Bryan Harsin's deal, which was also released Monday to the tune of $31.5 million over six years. Auburn will pay Harsin $5 million in his first season.

Here's a look at how much every coach's contract is worth in total, compared to the previous assistant coach in their respective roles.

• Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo: Three years, $3.9 million (Bobo will make $1.3 million in 2021; previous offensive coordinator Chad Morris made $735,000 in 2020)

• Defensive coordinator Derek Mason: Two years, $3 million (Mason will make $1.5 million in 2021; previous defensive coordinator Kevin Steele made $2.5 million in 2020)

• Offensive line coach Will Friend: Two years, $1.4 million (Friend will make $700,000 in 2021; previous offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr. made $500,000 in 2020)

• Defensive line coach Nick Eason: Two years, $1.4 million (Eason will make $700,000 in 2021; previous defensive line coach Rodney Garner made $650,000 in 2020)

i am glad they are paying the assistants well. if folks like Eason can make more in pro it would be a constant worry that he or other valuable member might leave.
