  1. Another twist is this:

What if Bruce leaves for another team in a couple years, and there are no proven head coaches available to replace him at AU?  Would AU offer Steven the head job under those circumstances?  And if so, would Steven even consider coaching at AU while his dad coaches elsewhere?

    Just wondering...

Interesting interview with Steven Pearl. He talks about how much Chad cried, etc. and apologized to his teammates. We all made dumb mistakes when we were younger. We need players who can be chippy. Yeah, he shouldn't have done it but let's move on and hopefully he can too and come back to be a huge contributor next season.

Glad to see CBM take responsibility.  I was afraid he was glossing it over.  This gives me renewed hope for him coming back and being a leader next season.  We need him, and he needs to stay in one place for more than a year.

  3. Don't know why, but I'm feeling cynical today...

In my day, the push for kickoff safety was to "eliminate the wedge" (so as to eliminate the dangerous necessity of "busting up the wedge").  Now they are adopting XFL rules.  They should just go ahead and name it the "Taylor Swift Rule".

Players are getting called for targeting, even in the cases where it's obvious they didn't intend to target.  Pretty soon, they'll start penalizing players for accidentally falling on one another.

    It's inching towards soccer...

  4. The recent early flameouts in the NCAA (especially this year's supposed "Final Four sleeper" team), coupled with Bama's 3rd Sweet 16 in five years (and they aren't done yet) should really motivate Bruce.  If he hasn't had a cookout for players at his house lately, then it might be time...

But seriously, I'd guess he's on the warpath to get guards that can shoot.  It's amazing how basketball success can be easily derailed by poor shooting.

Hopefully the new PG will be able to shoot the 3 and get to the basket.

No sir. I'm 67. The understanding gap is between folks that played basketball and folks that didn't. Otherwise I agree with you totally. The Pistons of old weren't the Pistons without Lambeir. (Lambere?). Rodman played the part with the Bulls. CBM screwed up because it was obvious. But you HAVE to respond if you want to play level the field. And there are ways to do it. Cole knows this. Everyone that played competitive basketball knows this.

Laimbeer, I think.  Cool spelling, tough player.  Dirty player.

  6. The ejection was warranted.  Maybe some refs would have overlooked the 2 and ruled it a 1 based upon the magnitude of the moment, but CBM committed a stupid, intentional foul that had nothing to do with basketball.  He put himself in the position of giving the ref a judgement to make.

I don't mind him trash talking.  A lot of players do that.

But I like CBM and hope he comes back next year.

  7. I played, and didn't smoke.  At least not back then.

Playing for a high school county football championship, our starting fullback and middle linebacker got sucker punched and retaliated with a punch, and got throw out of the game in the first quarter.  He was a very important player on both sides of the ball, and we lost, barely.  We all worked hard to get there, and he let us down.  That incident was jokingly mentioned in passing at our 30-year reunion.

Our football coach used to periodically "send in a goon" in practice to try and start a fight with a particular guy, just to see if the guy would fight back.  If he did, the whole team got punished.

I'd hope that can be the case. I'd believe it more if I didn't believe CBM to be the instigator in a majority of the altercations that he is in. I can't prove that cause I can't see him every minute of the game. But there's a reason he's the center of drama every single game despite who we are playing. It's not just a case of a kid needing to learn to cool his emotions when in a heated situation, he's the one making the situation heated and then taking it too far. That's a mentality, not a reaction.

Exactly. I didn't get to see the first half, but when I heard about an "ejection", I immediately thought "CBM".

Like the OP said, BP should have seen this coming with CBM's yearlong behavior, and especially his recent behavior.

I haven't even heard of CBM expressing any remorse or giving any sort of apology.  I guess in his mind he did nothing wrong, and the refs just made a bad call.

  9. Pearl lost Davion Mitchell, and lost out on Scoot Henderson.  Then crapped the bed by not recruiting Mark Sears, while our rival got him and thrived.

But he invested years in Wendell Green, allowing him to shoot logo threes and drive roughshod into the lane against multiple trees, ala KD Johnson.  Which probably accounted for much of the "culture problem" that had to be addressed this year.

It's gonna be a long, hot summer...

  10. When interviewed (at least the one I saw), Pearl was in denial that it was a flagrant 2, which it clearly was.

I also read that CBM tweeted "LOL" after he was ejected but deleted the tweet sometime thereafter.  Very immature.

Both Pearl and CBM need a reality check.  Pearl let this behavior go on way too long.  And CBM is being paid way too much in scholarship and NIL money to make mistakes like that.

for the record i cannot stand when we lose but it happens. people get frustrated and pop off and i understand it. i have bigger fish to fry at the moment.

Yeah, it ruined my night last and my plans for a gametime BBQ get-together tomorrow.

But I handled it a lot better than 4th-and-31.  I was looking for the phone number that day.

jeez guys i really dislike losing but i want to call the suicide hotline for some of you. and i am not playing. it is still a game regardless of how you look at it.

Suicide hotline probably has a lot of Auburn callers on hold right now...because Pearl is taking so long.

Well, I saw Tennessee, MSU, and other fans making fun of our loss on social media yesterday. And Lane Kiffin did too. It wasn't just bama fans. So no, I will not be puiling for any SEC teams.

I can't fault you for that.  Opposing fans can be cruel.  I just like watching Dalton Knecht play.  I can't understand how he flew under so many radars before winding up at UT.

  14. I'm afraid this loss will make Bruce look elsewhere in the next year or two.  As much progress as he has made at Auburn, he still hasn't been able to recruit the big, athletic, coast-to-coast guards that can score at all 3 levels. And those are the players he covets.  Obviously, players like that don't grow on trees, but UK and UT get them, and he could probably draw them to Indiana.

For the record, I love Bruce and hope he stays at AU.  But I think in his mind, he feels he's too good of a coach to never win a National Championship, and he's getting old.  I think he really expected a deep run this year.

  15. Aden Holloway looked dejected sitting on the bench in the 2nd half.  I saw only the final 11 minutes of the game, but remember seeing him in the game only once.  He committed a quick reaching foul then was banished to the bench for the remainder, it seemed. Wonder if he'll be back next year.
