Season Review

Recommended Posts

Thought it would be good have a thread that keeps track of the results of the season and some stats. Mostly for people that don't follow the team that close they can come find out how the team is doing easily and for those that follow closer to have a reference.

Good job with the stats. I do wonder about the negative stats however...errors, LOBs, BA with runners in scoring position and some of the things that must go well if small ball can pay off.

Austin seems to have the best bat but when I saw the line-up for one of the Ariz games, there were some sub .200s in the line-up though it's early in the season.

I added some team stats and where we rank in the SEC. We actually offensively compared to rest of the SEC are doing pretty well which surprised me. Although I'm sure that 22-0 win sure helped those stats. It's pitching thats killed us. If we want to get to Hoover this year we must improve on the mound. Koger and Varnadore need to have their best every weekend and someone needs to step up and take that Saturday spot

I think Jacobs will transition into that Saturday role eventually.  I think our pitching will settle in.  Pawlowski still seems to be experimenting with the bullpen.  I just hope we keep up on the scoring runs end.  Gotta cut down on the errors too (I'm not so sure we'll do that).

I updated this. Creede is statistically our best hitter and as really been on fire lately. I think both Wacker and Tella have done well too and moving Wacker and Creede up in the lineup has been huge. Jacobs (although against subpar opponents) has been outstanding. With Kendall getting the start Satuday it will be interesting to see how he does and if he is there for Ole Miss game

Updated it. Auburn has dropped some but not significantly in hitting stats compared to the league. We are about the same pitching. That tells me that we must be finding a better balance and it appears that way as we are now 6-2 in our last 8 outings. Ryan Tella continues to be excellent at the plate. Early in the year he didn't have a ton of hits but was getting on base via walks and such. Now he's adding hits which is good. Creede and Cullen continue to hit the ball outstanding and its nice to see Alvord heating his bat up a bit.

Pitching wise our four main starters are getting the job done. Both recent losses we only gave up 2 and 3 runs. If the starting pitching continues this way then watch out for the Tigers. It appears Slade is settling in as a long relief save guy while Bryant has been solid as a 9th inning closer. We need Ortman, Blatt, Luckie and rest of the bullpen to find some consistency which I do think has improved recently.

Interestingly Kentucky is middle of the pack in pitching but are first in almost every offensive category. Appears the Wildcats are using their bats to power to an undefeated season. It will be interesting to see if that can hold on to that tough SEC East. It's crazy that both Vanderbilt and South Carolina are 0-3 in the SEC....

Overall I have approached this season with cautious optimism. We had some tough losses early but this past weekend has to be a confidence booster. The goal is always to take 2 of 3 each weekend so I'm hoping the Tigers do just that at Plainsman Park! SEC play has just started which means the real season is under way!

I'm encouraged to see the team taking the mid-week games seriously.    The Tiger's performance in those non-SEC games last season probably cost the team dealy at tournament time.  They may not get much credit for the win, but it looks bad when a bunch of no-names show up on the "bad losses" list when the ratings are being prepared.

Also glad to see some of the guys taking a whack at the ball.....small ball is OK I guess but you need some base clearing hits too.  It's not like a couple years ago with 4 or 5 HRs per game but maybe the guys have gotten over the bat change and are starting to realize that a well hit ball will still get out of the park.

Finally got around to updating this again. Auburn is tied for first in the SEC west now with LSU and since we won the series we hold the tiebreaker. This upcoming weekend will be a test on how mature of a team we are. We should go to TTown and sweep but I will settle with a series win. Varnadore's stats don't show how well he has pitched this year. Unfortunately we struggle to hit other team's aces

The errors are still really frustrating. Creede has a ridiculous 10 errors which is unacceptable switching positions or not. You can see that Coach P is still moving guys around looking for the right lineup. I am encouraged by the fact that up and down the order guys are stepping up and getting big hits. I hope our pitching continues to be solid and it seems Luckie and Slade have settled in as bullpen guys.

It still real early in SEC baseball season but to win our first 3 series against solid SEC West teams is very encouraging. We have a tough road ahead of us as after Bama we play Vandy, SC, and Arkansas with Florida lurking at the end of the season. Sweeps are fun but at the end of the day if we win every series we will win the West and most likely host a regional. So let's get things done this week and go to turdtown and get a sweep.

War Eagle!

Good work. Hope the team keeps improving.. Looks like the team is ready now to have a pretty good year. Gelling at the right time.

Thoughts from the stats.

-Alvord leading us in RBI is really surprising. He is quietly having a great year.

-I feel like we haven't hit any HR this year so I'm surprised to see we're 8th there, I guess no one else is hitting them either.

-I love that we have so many walks, hate that we have so many sac bunts.

-Our rank of 8th for team ERA is really surprising.  I had read where we were first in the SEC but that just might be for conference play.  Maybe our ranking is hurt by OOC.  I feel like we have one of the best rotations in the league so that ranking seems low.

-And thanks so much for doing this, that is awesome to look over.

I'm surprised at 8th place also. Since league play began our ERA has to be close to best in the league. The highest run total given up in a game is 6. And it seems our opponents score at least 2 unearned runs each game.

Seems our pitching is on track, even though ERA is up. I think what hurts was more at the first of the year. As stated, we seem to be gelling at the right time.

I will eventually update this but hard for me to right now.... We have now lost 8 or our last 9 SEC games. I'm sorry but that is unacceptable. Some serious soul searching needs to be done by this team. If we don't turn it around that will be two straight seasons of collapses. I am starting to lose faith in Coach P's ability to get us back to a premier program. I definitely think he deserves another year but his seat is getting warmer in my opinion. Mainly for 2 reasons

1.) every season under him we have failed to be a good defensive team

2.) our pitching especially the weekend starters have struggled under him

Now early on our starting pitching had improved but its started to tail some recently although the porous defense doesn't help. I didn't think this team would win a regional but I thought it would be good enough to at least compete for SEC West title and we saw that they could in the first 3 series. But now I am just praying for a series win....
