Common denominator

What was the common denominator in Gus' two wins over UGA and Bama?  He was fighting for his job.  The really good coaches approach every game week with the same intensity, planning, scheming and coaching that Gus elevated to when he was fighting for his job.  Gus does not prepare that way any other time.  Under Gus, Auburn plays the really good teams like it's not the end of the world if we lose because they are good teams.  He keeps that card in his back pocket for his post game presser.  If our team can't play with passion on the road or look like they have any offensive identity whatsoever early in the season it's a lack of accountability that takes place everyday in how Gus runs his program.  Is he demanding excellence from his coaches?  Is he demanding excellence in every rep from every player during practices?  Is he watching tape after every practice to see who is giving full effort?  Evidently not when not one coach on the staff can answer how a redshirt is looking during the season.  The common answer is I don't see him he is scout team for the other side of the ball.  Do what!!!!  Are you serious?  You really don't know how your redshirt and scout team players are progressing until the bowl practices!  Lane Kiffin stated he was taken off guard after his first practice at Alabama when Saban required his coaches to get together to watch video of the practice.  Folks this is what big time coaches who demand excellence do every day.  They create a culture of excellence and accountability.  It starts at the top and you conform or you are no longer part of the program.

Lets look at the best side of the ball this year, the Defense.  Those coaches are a mixture of hard nosed long tenured coaches.  Rodney is gonna get after that arse if you don't give him 100% on every rep.  Heck we see it in practice videos and the players talk about it.  I love what he said yesterday about Holland.  I want him to come back but if he does he needs to be all in or he needs to leave now.  Steele has coached under most of the best HC's in the game.  Saban, Bowden, Tom Osbourne, Dom Capers to name a few.  He knows what it takes to win because he has seen it and lived it under the best.  What coaches on the Offensive side of the ball are getting in some arses when something isn't done right?  Herb Hand?  I don't think so.  Chip?  Gus?  Have you ever seen or heard those guys get angry?  Has the defense let us down under Steele and Rodney's care?  Nope.  It's consistently the offense game after game after game.  And that folks is the one thing that Auburn can't change.  It would take Gus bringing in someone with their own philosophy and doing things his way.  As we have seen this year with Chip, that ain't never gonna happen.  For Auburn to put distance between itself and the Mississippi schools in football Gus will have to swallow a huge pill and decide that it is in his best interest and Auburn's best interest for him to be a head coach and forget about offense.  Hell the results look like he has anyway.

Our end results each year are closer to them than some want to admit.  We have better facilities, better players, more undefeated seasons, more Hiesmans, and all of that stuff but our results every year are closer to them than our rivals.
