As the wins continue to pile up for the Auburn women’s basketball team, the number beside its name just keeps getting lower.

After picking up two consecutive wins to start the SEC season, Auburn (17-0) jumped three spots to No. 6 in the latest Associated Press poll, which is revised and released every Monday.

The new ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, which had the Tigers ranked No. 8, will be released today.

The ranking is Auburn’s highest since Jan. 5, 2000, when the Tigers climbed to No. 5. The Tigers finished that season 22-8 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Auburn is one of four undefeated teams left in the country, joining North Carolina, Connecticut and Kansas State.

The Tigers are off to their best start since 1988-89 when they won their first 29 games before losing to Tennessee late in the season. Auburn went on to win the SEC and advanced to the Final Four that year.

Auburn’s jump can be attributed to its strong play to open its SEC schedule, along with a number of losses suffered by previously higher-ranked teams.

Former No. 3 Texas A&M lost early in the week at Pittsburgh and former No. 7 Tennessee fell Sunday at Vanderbilt, 74-58. Texas, which was ranked one spot above Auburn, lost twice and dropped all the way to No. 16.

The Tigers, meanwhile, snuck by South Carolina, 80-76, to open conference play before a commanding performance Sunday against Florida.

In front of the seventh-highest crowd in Auburn women’s history, the Tigers handled the then-No. 18 Gators, 81-65. The Gators, now at No. 19, were

riding a 15-game winning streak before arriving on the Plains.

“They are a very, very good ball team,” Florida coach Amanda Butler said. “Auburn just had an answer for every adjustment we tried to do. They just played a fantastic ball game.”

Senior DeWanna Bonner had one of the best games Sunday, which subsequently led to her being named the SEC Player of the Week on Monday.

Bonner, the SEC preseason Player of the Year, scored 29 points Thursday against South Carolina before doing the same Sunday. She also grabbed 11 rebounds against the Gators to pick up her fifth double-double of the season. It is the second time she has received the honor this season.

Auburn resumes SEC play Sunday at Arkansas. The Tigers return home Jan. 22 against Alabama before a Jan. 25 matchup with the Lady Vols at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
