  1. I will never forget my 8 year old son's eyes when we crested the hill on Wire Road and saw Jordan-Hare Stadium on the horizon. It was UGA weekend, a beautiful fall day, and it was his first real visit to Auburn. He had been before, but was too young to absorb the atmosphere. We drove from our home in Mobile, stopped at a KFC to get our tailgate food, and sang "Glory, glory, to ole Auburn" all the way. He will never forget how I embarassed him: We were on I-85 between Monkeytown and Gloryland and I had to take a leak(excitement), so I just pulled over and ran into the bushes!! We tailgated on Wire across from the frat houses and walked to the stadium. I don't know how, but I got seats about 15 rows up next to the old players tunnel, around a lot of Auburn bluebloods. They all took my son under their wing and treated him like a King, shakers and all!! We won that night, and my son got to lean over and shake Coach Dye's hand as he left the field. Have you ever had a better feeling than to be in a crowd after an Auburn victory, inching toward the exits, and chanting; IT'S GREAT TO BE AN AUBURN TIGER!!? Neither Nick, my middle son, or I , don't know how it gets any better. That was 21 years ago.
  2. Where? What? Who? Golf, slammer where in hades are you guys when I need you?
  3. After all these rumors today, I am now officially the oldest at 107!!
  4. Nope, the comparison was because of our size. And I have taken it, rather than give it out, with 7 broken noses, a broken jaw, and three missing teeth. Those single-bar face masks just didn't do the job. An elbow would easily fit between the bar and the top of the helmet, or underneath the bar on your shin.
  5. Gonna bring up another historical moment in SEC football, which does not involve Auburn directly. How many of you recall the Darwin Holt-Chick Graning moment? For you younger guys, and I KNOW there's video of this because I have seen it too many times, UAT linebacker Holt (5'10", 185#) hit All-American Georgia Tech RB, Graning, at least 5 yards out of bounds, breaking his jaw and starting a fight between UAT and Ga. Tech. I was once referred to as Auburn's answer to Holt, because at the time I was 5'11, 185#. Now , I am 5'9", 235#. Yes, you do get shorter as you age, in a lot of ways!!
  6. Thanks, now we know it was 1961. I thought it was 1962.
  7. Thanks, fish. I can't seem to find anything either. But I know it happened and is out there somewhere.
  8. Were you still naked? Nope, had the blanket!! I rode to campus in the back of a pick-up, sitting on a spare tire!! So, yes, except for the blanket, I was naked~~
  9. OK, guys, time for a new story; I've been holding out on this one for obvious reasons, but it is all true. During my freshman year, I pledged, along with my best high school friend, to Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. At the time, it was the most modern house on campus, located next to the Heart of Auburn Motel ( the alumni center is now there). Pledges were asked to do all the things that you saw in "Animal House". Two things: "Have you ever swallowed an oyster, only to have it pulled back up on a string? Second, have you ever stood naked, had a string tied around your manhood, the other end tied to a 50# concrete block, and asked to stand on a chair, blindfolded? The string was only so long, and you were asked to show your love of your fraternity by dropping the block while standing on the chair.(Of course, the string was cut while you stood in the chair) I was "fortunate" enough to get a room at the house on College Street , beginning Spring Quarter (March 15, still cold at night). One night, I was abducted by the brothers from my bed, and taken to Tuskegee, and tied naked, with my butt pressed to the very cold marble statue of George Washingon Carver.I was tied there for at least 30 minutes, with cars coming by pointing and laughing(remember George in Seinfeld saying "I was at the pool"!!!). The Tuskegee police came, untied me, wrapped me in a blanket, and drove me: NO, not to Auburn, but to the city limits of Tuskegee, where they dropped me, advising me they couldn't take me any further. (I don't believe that to this day). I hitch-hiked the way to Auburn, got home about 4AM
  10. Thanks fish, I've asked DJ to work on it, but it was 1960-63, Johnny McGeever blocked a FG attempt, it lodged between his forearm and thigh pad, never hit the ground, and he returned it for a TD. I think it was against Kentucky, but not sure.
  11. I was at the game and no one realized what was happening for several seconds. I believe we were playing Kentucky and lost 14-12. Could be wrong on some of that though. MODS, can anybody help us pull this up. It was one of the most remarkable plays I've ever seen. Jonny McGeever is a old friend, but I have asked him if he has anything, and he doesn't. He got so tired of every one asking him about it, he hid everything(he still has it, though). DJ, ST, c'mon guys!! I've tried pops but no luck. Maybe someone more knowledge of computers then me can. I did find an article about it. Golf, there's a video of "Punt, Bama, Punt", so there has got to be something on this. I've seen it, but I can't remember if Johnny had it or not.

  13. Yeah, eagle 63, I recounted my experience at that game a few posts back. I would guess that "63" means you were there then. So was I. Send me a PM and tell me about yourself.
  14. He definitely won the Heisman that game. Here is a little short description of the game. The 1971 game came at a time when both teams looked nearly unbeatable and, were it not for a glut of undefeated teams atop the rankings, both could have contended for national championships. Both squads were undefeated. Auburn was ranked sixth, Georgia seventh, and the showdown in Athens was anticipated nationally. Georgia coach Vince Dooley, an Auburn alumnus, remembers his team as one of the best he had ever coached. The Bulldogs had an imposing defense led by Chip Wisdom, Chuck Heard, and Mixon Robinson. They allowed 25 points to Oregon State in the opener, but allowed only four touchdowns in the next eight games combined. The night before the game, students met on Auburn for the traditional "Burn the Bulldogs" pep rally and bonfire. About 13 bulldogs, most made of crepe paper and chicken wire, were sacrificed to the fire. A few students got creative with the fake dogs, constructing them out of graham cracker and marshmallow, potatoes, or ice cream cones. The rally set the right tone for senior quarterback Pat Sullivan's second-to-last regular season game. Sullivan threw four touchdown passes and set up a fifth as the Tigers beat the Bulldogs 35-20. The Sullivan-to-Terry-Beasley combination was as strong as ever. Sullivan connected twice with Beasley for touchdowns of 31 and 70 yards. He hit Dick Schmalz for 15- and four-yard scores. The long bomb to Beasley was the game's most important score. Auburn led 21-20 after Roger Mitchell blocked the extra point attempt after Georgia's third touchdown. On the first play after Georgia's kickoff, Sullivan connected to Beasley, who broke free from two defenders and streaked down the field for the score. Auburn iced the game on Georgia's next drive when Dave Beck picked off a pass from Georgia quarterback James Ray, who had replaced starter Andy Johnson. Sullivan finished with 248 yards passing, while Beasley had four catches for 130. For Dooley, the game was one of his "most bitter losses ever." He later said, "Sullivan was a superman having a super day, and Terry Beasley is a boy wonder." Sources "Auburn wins thriller, 35-20: Passing of Sullivan good for four TDs." Birmingham News 13 Nov. 1971. Another great story and game recap, golf!!
  15. Just went to Ace Hardware here in Nashville, with my ragged AE t-shirt on, to get a couple of A/C filters (it's hot and my A/C needs all the help it can get). I got a WAR EAGLE!!! from another customer. We met and shared stories: he went to Auburn in the mid-70s, and has a freshman and sophomore there now. They're going down next week to get situated for the coming year. We were talking about what a great year we were gonna have, and a UT fan chimed in; "I hope you guys are right, because I hate those Bammers! At least you guys are decent people". We both told him to cheer up, because they were not only not be National Champs, they weren't even going to be State Champs!!! He(the AU Dad) wrote the AE web address on the palm of his hand (ala Sarah Palin), and I told him about this thread. Hopefully, we'll hear from him soon. I know this happens all the time in Alabama, but not here, so this was cool!!
  16. Seems like I remember food fights, and something to do with mustard and ketchup packets. Also, the proper name is the "Kopper Kettle (pronounced Ka-teel')"
  17. I guess my memory is getting bad, but the bottom line was those boarding houses were a very important of Auburn University history. Thank you guys for sharing!!
  18. In another comment, we started this thread and have had a lot of fun with it. Alongside, came a request from young SWestbrook, a snotty young whippersnapper out of North Alabama, who suggested we start a "Youngest AE Member" thread. He and TAYLOR KEETON must have hooked up, because their thread became a delight also. Bottom line is, even though we are worlds apart in age, we all have one wonderful thing in common: WE LOVE AUBURN UNIVERSITY!!. I believe our ages run from 13 to 72, as close as I can determine, but isn't it wonderful that we all can share a common experience? I respectfully request that we all, as we go forward, respect each other for who we are and why we are here in the first place, and that we are all PROUD TO BE AUBURN; WE ARE NOT AUBURN FANS, WE ARE AUBURN.
  19. About 50 years ago, I came to Auburn. My parents left me with a bicycle at a home where they had rented me a room. I can still see the taillights in the car when they left me sitting on the curb next to the house with the room. I thought; well, you are now on your own. The people who owned the house suggested that I go to one of the "Boarding Houses" to obtain a meal ticket for a week or month. They suggested the "Greenhouse", which was, I believe onthe corner of College and Snatch(Thach). Now, I know you young'n are not going to believe this, but that was the best food an 18 year old could ever have!! We sat at a BIG table, had a ticket that you bought by the week and had punched at the door, and ate bisquits and greens and corn bread and whatever!! Got to know a lot of people at that table!! Golf and Slammer, help me with this. Was it College and Snatch? Help me out here!!
  20. Good questions. Anybody know the answers.
  21. Ok, eagle 63. I'm right there with you at 66. Went to school between 60 and 65!! Now, you've got to give us a story!! BTW, in an earlier post , I referred to the FORESTRY PLOT!! Would any of you old flattulents like to tell these youngen' a story or two?
  22. Slammer, send me a PM. We have a lot in common, my kids went to Father Ryan!! I go to Lady of the Lake Church in Hendersonville. Because I am a history buff, I will promise you that me and my wife will go to Lebanon and research this!!! I know you went to the old FR campus on West End, but have you seen the new campus off Franklin Road? It's AUsome!!
  23. Been here since 1992, but do not know about that school. But I will promise you I will research it and get back to you. WDE!!
